I'm pretty sure it was talked about on DC a few weeks ago.  A program that let you add other program windows to its frame.  You could move them all by dragging the frame etc..

I've tried every search term I can think of with no results.  Does anyone remember this Windows utility?

I just finished GlassHouse.

From the perspective of the civilization wherein resides the main character, we are living in The Dark Ages(tm.)  I won't say more to avoid spoiling the surprises.  Although I must say if gender shifting or role reversal weirds you out don't bail on the novel.  It's handled in such a way that it doesn't feel creepy.

I have a feeling the next few Sci Fi novels I read will be by this author.  :)

I used EaseUS free on Windows 7.  It worked fine.  But with Windows 8 unless you have reset things to legacy mode, you need to be sure the imaging program and restore media supports GPT, secure boot, and UEFI.

Macrium does it by default.  Also the restore media supports secure boot.  You don't have to change any of the BIOS defaults.  I haven't looked into how EaseUS has kept up.  A regular poster on W8 forums told me Macrium just does it out of the box.

The only complaint I have with GPT and all the rest of it is the backup images are larger.  I used to be able to back up my C: on W7 for about 20 GB of image file.  Now it comes in at around 30 GB.  Also instead of 20 minutes it takes more like 40(part of that being this is a Laptop and the HD is slower.)

Edit: from looking on their features chart the Free EaseUS ToDo does support GPT etc..

I recommend Macrium Reflect Free.

It will create a bootable USB using WinPE that supports UEFI and secure boot.  Also it supports GPT.  When you start it the first time you'll want to create the rescue media(the bootable USB.)  Then for the actual backup just click on the top left where it says "create a backup image that can restore Windows."  This will select all the hidden GPT partitions you need as well as the C: system partition.  If you have a factory restore partition and don't care about backing that up, uncheck it(on my Laptop it's about 10 GB.)

If the target is the USB each file of the backup set will be max 4 GB.  If the target is an NTFS partition it will make one large image file.  It does it automatically.  Nothing to click.

Once you are done I recommend you boot the USB to make sure you can see the Windows partition and the backup image set on the USB or other drive.  If so you should be golden.  The advantage of WinPE is it can use the native Windows drivers.  The paid version automatically includes all needed drivers.  But if you can boot and see all media you should be fine.  If you need to add a Windows driver the Macrium forum likely has details how to load it into the WinPE image.

Edit: My Laptop has W 8.0 preloaded and the Macrium setup and backup was smooth.  Nothing to jury rig.

@4wd that's similar to how chrome adds search engines. I don't remember if there's a way to cascade them in the context menu.  But I only use chromium now for diagnosing other browsers.  :)

If you get something working please post it.  I'd be curious to see how you approach it.  FF context menu I can search using whatever engine is in the search box.  But it would be nicer to have a submenu with all the search engines or some other approach that's not cumbersome.  :)

Another factor is the savvy of the poster with the issue.  On the sites I listed there's a form to fill in hardware specifics.  But there's no item for experience level or expertise.  Seems like whenever I go the extra yard to give step by step how to set a particular Windows option the person replies "I;ve been programming Windows for 20 years.  I know where Control Panel is."  It can be embarrassing.  :)

Another stumbling block I run into when working an issue is that some posters feel that if they were thinking something when typing the problem description I should pick it up via clairvoyance.  Unless you are an exceptionally quick typist it can be easy to think you've entered more than is actually there.

And of course the classic case where the poster lists none of the remedies tried and when you suggest a fix or two you get "I already tried those. None of them worked."  Clairvoyance again being indispensable.  :)

I find often a step by step remedy is in one of the tutorials.  I know I've seen it.  But the problem is hitting on the right search terms.  Sometimes it takes me 1/2 an hour to find a tutorial I know is there.  Of course by that time I return to the thread and someone else has already pasted the link.  :)

It truly is amazing how you can search on a problem for days with no results, and then after rephrasing the question a bit...find hundreds of references to the correct answer.

So true.  Often I find the thorniest problems involve a term nearly impossible to search on without a deluge of irrelevant hits.  For example a problem that involves searching itself.  Also it would be cool if some AI algorithm could exclude stuff like doors, picture windows, and storm windows when searching on "Windows" issues.  :)

Meritline used to have these cheapie LED keychain lights like 4 for a buck.  Now they seem to want to get you over $5 for this plastic crap.  I've tried the local dollar stores.  No dice.

It doesn't have to be this exact model but I'm looking for a keychain LED light in this form factor cheap online.  Shipping should only consist of sticking it in an envelope and mailing.  So I'm looking to come in under $3 for one.

The other most popular Constitutional Misconception I think is that therein is stipulated something about The Two Party System(tm)  The totally contrived effect of the two currently dominant political parties haranguing.  In the subconscious Joe Sixpack must be converting a vague memory of a legislature with two bodies, House and Senate, into this channel of thinking.  Like the commercial that tells you it's two, two, two mints in one we get the crap that if there's a Democrat and a Republican this is all inclusive.  Reading it is more fun for seeing what's not there at times.  :)

is part of the Constitution.  They think the Constitution was written to guarantee individual rights rather than delineating the governmental setup.  I tell them if the purpose of the document was to proclaim individual rights the "Bill of Rights" would not be amendments.  They would be right near the start like in the Declaration. Unfortunately for us the Constitution is the document that binds, not the DOI.  Joe Sixpack has heard the "self evident" part so often he just thinks that's what keeps the cops in check.  :)

Many of the regular posters on the Windows forums I listed are IT/Support professionals current or former. Many of the retired ones just enjoy working the problems and try to help.

I've been on them for several years.  They don't solve every problem.  But just the Tutorials section alone has a wealth of info.

In fact when I first got a Vista PC pre service pack I found the Vista forum to help me tweak it. I've been posting there ever since. The same group who runs the Vista forum runs the others.  There's already a Windows Nine waiting for the OS pre-releases.

I'll also look through HowtoGeek on occasion.  Some good nuggets there. Used to be you could find fixes to the really quirky issues on the annoyances forums.  I don't know if they are still active though.

Right click on Computer,
click Properties,
click either Advanced Tab or Advanced System Settings (varies with Windows version)
Environment Variables should have a button near the bottom.

If it is blank you should be able to find example path,comspec and extended path strings on google.  My system path includes:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static

I have a 64 bit system.  If yours is 32 bit you won't have C:\Program Files (x86)    it will just say C:\Program Files
