National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

ps. vrgirl here on this forum actually wrote a full novel in 2003 at this site.

Just to save people a visit or in case the website goes down, here is what that page says:

The lines don't automatically wrap to keep the paragraph formatted, when words added or deleted
Place your cursor somewhere inside the paragraph and press <Alt+L>, <Alt+C>, <Alt+R>, <Alt+J> for Left Align, Centered, Right Align, Justified respectively. If you place the cursor inside the paragraph with the mouse, you must hit one of the arrow keys at least once to get the whole paragraph to reformat, otherwise it will only format the single line in which your cursor was positioned.

works quite well actually.

until you mentioned this it didn't rise much to my consciousness but i have to agree this is really annoying and i have to manually align stuff constantly.

you could use clipboard help+spell and add a text modifier preset to wordwrap at desired length, so that its available from the hotkey popup in clipboard help and spell, but it's still very annoying.  it would be nice if they could fix this.

Found currency experiment

The people who do this stuff are my heros.

Last year around this time, I constantly passed loose change in the Quick Chek parking lot in Highland Park, NJ. No one ever thinks of picking up pennies cause they are worthless, but I started to see nickles and dimes on the ground, and I was wondering how much money that would come out to if you picked up all the change you found for a year.
Well, as of May 19th last year, I've been picking up any change that I saw on the ground (at the extremely high cost of of my dignity)

Has your hosting provider provided a reason as to why this took so long?

they never do.  actually most of the time they are the ones that cause the problems.  when asked to explain what caused the problem and what the fix was, they rarely reply.

servstra.com is where we have our $205/month dedicated server.
i would not recommend them.
the hardware and price is good - the tech support is not.
30436
currently we host some member accounts on the main donationcoder.com web server.  this was our original plan to help pay for hosting costs.

i have come to the conclusion that we would all be better of with a secondary server for user accounts and backup.

i am migrating all accounts at donationcoder.com to the new server.

if all goes well you should simply be able to change the nameserver settings in your domain name and everything will work exactly as before.

i'm doing this mainly for security reasons but it will also let us mirror BOTH the user accounts and the main site on 2 dif servers so that we can switch between them if we ever have a more serious failure.

the second server is not nearly as powerful as our current one (its a $60 a month virtual private server), but it should be much faster/powerful than the normal account any individual would normally buy, and in fact due to all the cpu usage of donationcoder stuff, i suspect if anything it will result in faster access on your member accounts (though i know this wasnt an issue).

again,
you wont have to change anything except the nameserver configured at your domain name registrar.  everything else including emails, website, forums, etc. will be exactly the same.

+100 points for everyone who guessed that tech support at the hosting company would foul up the hardware replacement and take us offline for a day..

Looks like things are back to normal now.

Thanks for your patience!

absolutely, 100% fantastic work app!

well worth the wait!!

let's hear what JacobB and his friends say, but i think you've created a real winner here.

ps.
reminder: send some credits to app103 if you want to support these kinds of projects!

it seems we might have a bad memory stick in the server or something similar..
we may experience some downtime in the next 24-48 hours if they need to replace hardware.
I will keep you updated.  If you have an account on the donationcoders.com server this is the time to back it up.

works wonderfully once installed properly.  Really fantastic work.
it might benefit from a little readme about where to put the files, and that it requires .net 2.0.

out of curiousity jazw, did you make it before or after seeing the request in this thread from Mighty Pete?  It seems like it is exactly what he asked for.

i'll wait till you add a readme and then blog this - it's very well done.  congrats again

Screenshot Captor / Re: Option to NOT save to file?
« Last post by mouser on July 30, 2006, 08:40 PM »
yes, i will add this for those who want it, it seems to be a good compromise and will in fact reduce disk usage and so speed up multiple captures.  it will of course be an option - i myself prefer to have it save every capture and let me choose later which to delete.

i could add a toggle in the tray, so you could easily switch between "save every capture" mode, and "capture overwrite temporary buffer".

What's particularly interesting about that is the processing would tend to reduce or all but eliminate the traditional cues that something is shot on film vs. DV/digital or even traditional video or hell a frickin digital camera movie capture. If that's true and the audience accepts this as a valid visual style for mainstream work, or at least with particular thematic qualities, it might be a very interesting option for lower-budget film makers...

jj this was exactly what i was thinking as well -
these post production filters like this could be a godsend to low budget film making.

Living Room / Spamradio: turning spam into a radio show
« Last post by mouser on July 30, 2006, 12:43 PM »
listening to this will give you a headache but its such a cool idea how can you not love it.

Spamradio is a non-profit making project which is focussed on turning spam (junk) email into an Internet audio broadcast.
2. Why?

This is the most frequently asked question (if you can believe it). There are many reasons that we felt inspired to create spamradio, but this is the main one:

Everybody hates spam. Mass-marketing junk email is the bane of the Internet. But it thinks very highly of itself. It invades your inbox every day with a sense of confidence. There is always a new sales pitch -- a new way that you can improve your life, if only you will take a few minutes to read. Anything this important shouldn't be ignored. Anything this important deserves its own radio show.
