Living Room / Re: Anyone any idea how to make an IP appear to be in another country?
« Last post by Darwin on February 25, 2008, 08:51 AM »
Ad-muncher has an IP scamble feature which works well but over which you have little control (as to the country of origin). I just keep hitting scamble until I get what I want...

Basically means that I can lost three current plugins - Lookout for indexing, EZDetach for Attachments, and EZMessage to back up my messages... I'm not uninstalling anything, for now, though... Still testing, but I am very impressed.

I'm really enjoying the functionality but do note that over time RAM use creeps up and more irritatingly stays up. Where Outlook will release RAM when it is minimized to tray (or if it is maximized from tray and reminimized), Xobni's service hoards it. I shouldn't fuss... I have 2 GB of RAM and rarely have under 900MB free (and usually 1.3 Gig or so), but I can't help it. Years of conditioning have left me a paranoid about RAM utilization!

This IS annoying Josh. What annoys me is the presumption of it... and the futility. Really, all that is accomplished is a lot of seething resentment on the part of the people who were forced to let the jerk in...

And if you email them to say anything nice that they want to use on the site, they are likely to advertise your real name to the world as someone using their cracked software.

Heh, heh, that was the thing that jumped out at me as well  ;)

Shouldn't Fibonacci go up to 109 or even 174? I know nothing about the sequence but it looks like 65 and 44 should be added together to get to the next number...

Anyway, interesting idea but I haven't got a clue how to respond as I have never given these types of sequences much (any) though before!

OK. I missed the boat completely. Here's the developer's description of Clickthereitis:

Click, there it is! is something Apple should have done in the Open/Save dialog boxes since the invention of "multitasking." Have you ever wanted to Open/Save a document into a place where the Finder already has a window opened for it? If you see the window in the Finder you can instantly make that your current folder for opening or saving simply by clicking on it. If the Open/Save dialog should happen to obscure the Finder window you are looking for, then simply drag it out of the way by dragging it from any point along the frame!

Does sound cool and I don't know of an existing application that will do that. I'll have to try it under OS X!

I may be misunderstanding what you're after, but there are a variety of File Dialog extenders that should provide you with some of this funcitonality. They were reviewed at DC about 18 months ago: https://www.donation...Extenders/index.html

FWIW what you describe sounds a bit like the old (3rd party shareware) Instant File Access app from Windows 3.x, which I dearly loved and miss a lot...

FWIW - I had to send out a bunch of e-mails to students the AM and found Xobni VERY useful in finding addresses and old correspondence. One thing that is great about it is that it brings Live Search functionality to Outlook. I might just have to learn to live with that colour scheme... (if they don't bite on my suggestion to either provide some skins and/or make the interface more customizable.

Actually, looking at my profile, I don't see my groups listed and I can't find a way to "reveal" them... anyone care to enlighten me?  :-[

I don't know what's going on now, Curt... I'm pretty much performing without a net on Facebook, now, so *should* be very exposed!  :o

Yeah - I noticed after I posted my second screenshot that the colour scheme looks ok in it... However, in real usage it is very garish compared to the muted colour scheme that I use... C'est la vie. Thank you for commenting

Here's a screenshot of Xobni on my system:

Gives an idea (I hope) of what Xobni looks like - and makes the case for my desire for some control over the colour scheme?!

iphigenie - I've started a thread about Xobni here, and wonder if you have any observations about it that you'd like to share there?

iphigenie drew my attention to Xobni several weeks ago in this post:

One add on I have been testing at the moment is xobni, which mostly analyses contacts and emails to produce nice little profiles, for each contact, showing not only the history of interactions (and the wonderful "files exchanged with x" section listing all attachments sent or received, which means I only need to find an email from that person to find any attachment they sent me, i like that!) but also social features like who they are connected to, emailing patterns, and some quick overview tools

Sounded interesting so I googled it and applied to join the beta programme. My e-mail inviting me to the beta party came in yesterday and I am now using it. I'm interested in other users' experiences with it so am starting this thread.

If you are intested in trying it out, I have 5 invites to give out. Let me know if you are interested (it took me several weeks to get a spot through signing up at the website) via PM or e-mail and I'll send you an invite. First five across my inbox will be served.

From my limited experence with it so far, I'd defintiely like to see more user customization allowed - particularly colour scheme and indexing.

EDIT: switched to inline thumb attachment...

Living Room / Re: slow boot on new hard drive problem
« Last post by Darwin on February 22, 2008, 11:55 PM »
Darwin, those settings in windows wouldn't affect the booting process before XP loads, would they?

No... you're right (I think. I don't know  :o). I didn't read your original post closely enough and thought there was an overall system slowdown. FWIW, on my wife's notebook the system booted very slowly and ran very slowly. Switching from PIO to DMA solved both issues (and then my 5 year old dropped it on the floor rendering the whole thing moot!).

Check Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Settings and go to the IDE entry. Click on the Primary IDE Channel entry and make sure that it is set to DMA if Available and NOT PIO... Just a thought (I recently had the same problem, which is why this came to mind).

Other than that, I think most of facebook is a really weird vaste of time.

Agreed - hence my earlier decision to deactivate my account!

You are here and here but not there or there, or is it the other way around?

People often describe me this way...  :o

Anyway, I suspect you are correct and Facebook system is just processing the update to my profile.

150 stable relationships! Counting the computer and my wife I can only count one stable relationship.  8)

(Just in case my wife reads this ... yes dear of course it's the computer)  :P

Huh? I was the first one to join!

I'm guessing that I have to unhide myself or something... before I deactivated the account, I got paranoid and hid a bunch of stuff - will correct it now.

Why are you checking the supporter yearbook when you should be checking the full forum member list sorted by post count?
I've learned something new today :)

Me too  188 is still close to Dunbar's number, though, isn't it? Interesting...

OK, urlwolf, I've joined the Facebook group.

- or  have you?   :-\

Ah yes, Curt! Indeed... I'm joined up to Facebook under my "real" name!

PS my avatar at the moment is a big question mark, if that helps...
