That was pretty cool. I do like transhuman fiction, though the reality is simply terrifying, and nothing like what you get in fiction stories.

This probably deserves its own thread, but we'll stick it here:

Sleepwalking Into Censorship

https://www.openrigh...king-into-censorship

Excerpt:

What's clear here is that David Cameron wants people to sleepwalk into censorship. We know that people stick with defaults: this is part of the idea behind 'nudge theory' and 'choice architecture' that is popular with Cameron.

The implication is that filtering is good, or at least harmless, for anyone, whether adult or child. Of course, this is not true; there's not just the question of false positives for web users, but the affect on a network economy of excluding a proportion of a legitimate website's audience.

I really like the term they use - sleepwalking into censorship. It's quite apt and nicely describes the slippery slope that "save the children" invariably leads to.

The implications of all this should be obvious to everyone here, especially if they've ever read any posts by me or some of the other rabidly anti-censorship people here.

I found that article via this one, which is far less forgiving, and points out that this is nothing more than the totalitarian tip-toe once again.

Being the immoderate that I am, I'd flat out call this a cog in the machine of mind control.

Whether it's in the UK or Canada makes no difference - it's the same thing being rammed down people's throats. And most people won't know enough to unblock/uncensor their filters, so any talk about "it's voluntary" or "you have a choice" is just drivel. Out-out is not a choice you make - it is a choice that is made for you.

I never watch trailers or anything about a movie before I see it,

For The Colony, neither had I, but from watching other movies that had the same 'adversaries', (hinted at in the first few minutes), the narration of what happened to the planet, the SOS, the initial confrontation between Paxton and Zegers, etc, etc - it all adds up to give you a pretty good idea of what's going to happen further on.  As Shades said.

Contains possible spoilers
I kind of missed some of the beginning as I was wrapping up some work when I hit play. Guess that was a good thing. :D

I was wondering what the villains would be when they got to Colony 5. I thought people or aliens, but was hoping for something less predictable. The cannibal angle was a bit disappointing.

I hate monsters/villains/whatever that do nothing more than "roar". It's lame. I'm quite sick of the exact same sound effect for every single bad guy. Doesn't matter if it's a human, monster, alien, or whatever - the exact same sound effect is used in every movie for the past however many decades.

Living Room / Re: 3D Printers - Dirty Secret
« Last post by Renegade on July 28, 2013, 10:57 PM »
Unfortunately, the referenced article in the first post of this thread, doesn't mention the relativity of this 'polution' caused by 3D printers: it's comparable to grilling meat on a charcoal barbeque or smoking a cigarette, as mentioned here and in other articles.

I'm not sure... see below...

Wet/dry vacs have two filters, one filter that catches real fine particles like dust.  The outer filter which fits over the dust filter is foam.  I've used it on real fine saw-dust and nothing got by the filters, the exhaust was blowing clean air even though the foam filter was dry....

The problem isn't so much the volume of dust. The problem is the size of it. Regular filters simply aren't equipped to deal with nano-particles. They're just too small.

A good example of the problem in action is when you see outbreaks of cryptosporidium in the water. It makes a lot of people sick and kills some elderly and kids. It's a very small pathogen that isn't filtered out of the water by things like Brita filters or granular carbon filters. You need an RO or high-quality compressed carbon block filter as their particulate filtering size is very small, and enough to get the pathogen. My guess is that the filters on a wet/dry vac are more like a Brita filter than an RO filter.

There are other kinds of filters that act fundamentally differently though - e.g. electrostatic and chemical/resin filters. I don't know enough about 3D printing media to know what kind of filter would help though.

From what I've read across a few different articles in different disciplines, nano-particles are very much different as they can interact on much smaller scales, which is what makes them so effective in many cases.

I have NO idea whether 3D printing material is safe or not or whether it's mostly safe or whatever.

I AM willing to bet that the small size of the particles is relevant to the discussion of whether they are safe or not. Beyond that, no clue.

My guess is that it's probably better to be safe than sorry, and to try to minimize the amount that you breathe in. Given how small they are, it's going to make filtering out all of it tough, but some basic precautions would still be a good idea.

And I'll go along with Shades w.r.t. The Colony, much of the storyline was apparent after the first 10-15 minutes.

I never watch trailers or anything about a movie before I see it, so 10-15 minutes in I hadn't figured out who the villain was, etc. It makes movies much better that way when all you know is the general genre and title.

Gallowwalkers

https://en.wikipedia...rg/wiki/Gallowwalker
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0829176/

Pretty impressive for a fellow that was in prison (Wesley Snipes).

It's a supernatural western, so if you like westerns & funky supernatural stuff, you'll likely find it entertaining.

The story ends with the start to a TV series or comic book series or something. Some people might like it. High-fantasy stuff.

Don't expect anything meaningful though. It's straight up action/horror/western.

With all the other attacks on the Constitution, I think the ban on "cruel and unusual punishment" might fall one day too. I had it all worked out a while back... so you could give people "unusual" punishments simply by declaring them "not cruel proportional to the crime".

Hopefully not. Cross fingers.

This makes for endless comedy skits - going all clockwork orange on someone and making them watch Barney repeats!

If it's unfunny, is it uncomedy? :)

Why Canada Should Block Internet Pornography

On Tuesday, July 22, 2013, I applauded British Prime Minister David Cameron for his bold approach to work with Internet Service Providers to develop solutions to protect children, including an opt-out adult content filter. In this massive fight against child exploitation and the sexualisation of our children, every step we can take makes a difference.

From the outset, I have emphasized the need for a conversation amongst Canadians about how we can better protect youth from adult content online. We currently restrict and protect children from exposure to adult content everywhere but the internet. When ordering Cable TV, you have to 'opt-in' to receive adult channels. Why should the internet be any different?

And with the same lame "think of the children" argument.

I'm glad I don't beat my head against the wall every time I see something like this. I'd be dead.

The author even brings up slavery.  :-\

Canada's national anti-slavery advocacy group...

Seriously?

And then...

I look forward to working with parents, governments, ISPs, search engines and stakeholders about how we can increase the tools and choices available to protect children online from adult content.

Ummm... How about instead they spend the money (that they are planning to waste) on developing some GPL FLOSS software that people can choose to download and use?

Putting the burden on ISPs won't help anyone.

GPL software would be perfect, as it could help address other problems like this.

That problem wouldn't get solved immediately, but it would be a good first step.

BEN KNIGHT: Part of that is because the big data companies have learned from the Chattanooga experience. They've successfully lobbied 18 US states to pass laws that block other cities from building their own fibre networks.

If that isn't anti-competitive, what is?

:(

What you're expecting me to say... i.e. classical cynicism
No. You're missing the entire point of fascism. You purchase legislation to block out as much competition as possible, and make it illegal to compete with you. It's all wonderful as it helps create jobs and stimulates the economy as it funnels boundless cash into the pockets of consolidated capital fascists that then turn around and purchase luxury cars and have massive mansions built for them. And as the middle class sinks further into poverty, it helps drive sales and increase employment for McDonalds and soup kitchens. See?!? Everyone gets a slice.

hMailServer is very good on Windows. Mercury32 is another to look at, though you need to understand what that it isn't a service.

A friend of mine does very large mailings for a fortune 100 company and uses Postfix.

Other people use Sendmail or Qmail.

Yep.

The Colony - Predictable storyline (same as Hunger games) but the actors put in better performance.

Was better than I was expecting. Still, a typical dystopian action/horror, and very few of those are actually really good.

I was a bit disappointed with Bill Paxton's character. I like Bill Paxton most often, but hated his character this time.

Some info that could be a bit spoiling for some - nothing major though
There are very large seed vaults out there, and there's one in Sweden that looks VERY similar to "Colony 7". It's almost as though they modeled Colony 7 after it.

It wasn't very predictable until they reached Colony 5. After that, yeah... pretty much all that you'd expect.

Filtering particles that small is a difficult problem. I don't think your wet/dry vac would be all that effective. I'm sure it would get some, but how much is another question.

Probably an airtight housing for the printer would be a good start. At least contain the dust while printing.

^^ Interesting that you bring up pedophilia. There are some people that have been screaming about it for years, but, as you may well expect, they've been labeled "crazy conspiracy theorists" and dismissed. While it would be nice if they were simply crazy, reality seems to be pointing to the exact opposite.

^^ I was actually referring to a "breathing" tax, but good to hear that the taxman has at least started basic air-taxes. :P

In other news... a short article on Detroit has proposed it become a Free City, and...

You can rest assured, Detroit, that America will come to your rescue if those bloodthirsty Canadians attack!

Hehehe! Reminds me of the movie "Canadian Bacon".

The hunger games - Waste of time (why it got the high IMDB score is beyond me).

I looked at it more as a prediction than a movie. Seemed like a step beyond some other dystopian novels.

Grabbers - Good Irish horror movie that is more funny than horror and I think that the missus wouldn't mind watching this one together either.

Interesting. I'll see if I can find that one next time I look.

I near peed myself when I read that. Throwing out the mice? Wow. The depths of idiocy in government just knows no bounds.

Hay now, they were just trying to prevent history from repeating itself ... Rodents carried plague throughout the land back in the dark ages...and devil be damned if they were going to let that shit happen again..!

Ah! Right you are~! Hope they smashed all the ports real good to stop the spread as well.

Here's another bit of fun about the sun:

The text:

http://bastiat.org/en/petition.html

A snippet from it:

We are suffering from the ruinous competition of a rival who apparently works under conditions so far superior to our own for the production of light that he is flooding the domestic market with it at an incredibly low price; for the moment he appears, our sales cease, all the consumers turn to him, and a branch of French industry whose ramifications are innumerable is all at once reduced to complete stagnation. This rival, which is none other than the sun, is waging war on us so mercilessly we suspect he is being stirred up against us by perfidious Albion (excellent diplomacy nowadays!), particularly because he has for that haughty island a respect that he does not show for us.
