Find And Run Robot / Re: New FARR v2 Icon Design Needed

TucknDar: I love the one you did. Definitelly a winner. Could you just reduce a bit the lighting in the man's arm? it makes it hard to understand that bit in the icon version.
I also think that the one hamradio did is pretty cool!

You could use mouser's tap tap which was made for these situations. It also takes very little mem :)

ps.
farr has options to show the edit box a the bottom of the window, instead of top by default, and to hide the statusbar completely.  does anyone use either of these options?
I like "hide statusbar". but edit box on bottom looks weird :S

The max i got was 79. All acomplished using the green towers at the max level. I think those are the best because they have a high rate of fire, and at the max level, they represent the best power to cost relation.
It's a fantastic game, i loved playing it! :D

(btw.. anderson could you reduce the size of the image? it's way too large for my screen :S)

I actually tried AlfaClock (and BetaClock) this morning and although it has some nice features, I'm not impressed by the fact that it uses 12 megs of RAM...
Weird... My alfaclock only takes 1.7mb of mem and 2.5mb of virtual mem. I'd ditch it right away if it took 12mb or ram! :)

General Software Discussion / Laptop cooling system
« Last post by jgpaiva on December 17, 2006, 01:35 PM »
In the recent years, i've been around many many laptops and recently i've come to some conclusions about the way manufacturers design them. While talking with kenR on irc, he encouraged me to post them, so here they are.

Notice that all these conclusions were taken from use of those laptops and from opinions from its owners, nothing is factual or based in numbers.

These comments refer to laptops of the following brands: toshiba, acer, asus, lg, compaq and hp. From various models, bought since 2003 in portugal.

The problem is: non of them is perfect.
I've found 2 classes of laptops:
The affordable and the expensive. Mostly, lg and toshiba go in the expensive class and the other ones on the affordable.

The affordable ones, are the ones that claim excelent price-specs relation, while the expensive ones are those that one thinks "why would i buy this? they are over-pricing it!".

Well... I've come to the conclusion that the biggest difference between these 2 classes are mostly in terms of the cooling system.

The acers, hps and compaqs i know, all have the same problem: overheat. After some time, you can't just use them on your lap, it'll burn you. This derives from processors which are too powerful for the cooling system. They work just as well as the others, but the heat is anoying.
As for the asus, it shows a different problem: when you turn it on, the fan starts and simply doesn't stop! That's the way asus solved the overheat problem.
Now, the interesting part, is that by using speedfan you can tune the fan to turn on at a higher temperature, but then it has the same problem that acers have: overheat. (the same thing happens the other way with acers).

Now... The expensive ones. Both LG and Toshiba's computers have one of 2 problems: either they are less powerful than the "cheap" counterparts, or they are more expensive then those. On the other hand, they are almost assured against the problems the other computers have. Since if they are less powerful, they don't need such a good cooling system, or if they are as powerful, they become more expensive due to the better cooling system.

That means that buying a laptop is all a matter of balance. Mine were always in the cheap and overheating computers. Simply because i like to have top of the line without spending an enourmous amount of money. Also, the noise of the fans drives me crazy.

Still, i think that my next one will be an LG. From what i know, those are the best build laptops (notice that i've never used a dell). Top of the line, with all the important worries (in terms of weight, size and such), and even if they are a bit less powerful than the rest, those definitelly deserve the extra money.

General Software Discussion / Re: CustomBar
« Last post by jgpaiva on December 15, 2006, 03:34 PM »
Ok, i hope you managed to get your icons back.

Now i noticed a small problem. Possibly, what i'm going to tell you to do next, won't work because you don't have winxp. let's see.

Now that they are back, let's make them disappear.
Just right-click on the desktop. then, select "align icons by.." then untick "show icons on the desktop".
If that option is missing, there's no way you can do this.. Sorry.

Nevertheless, you still can use it all the same way, you'll only still have the icons there, taking part of your wallpaper ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: CustomBar
« Last post by jgpaiva on December 15, 2006, 03:19 PM »
Don't despair, Curt. I know what happened.
That's not the way to hide the icons on the desktop.
You can't go to their properties and choose "hidden". That makes them be really hidden.
What you have to do, is choose an option that will allow you not to show any icons on the desktop. But they'll be there, and not hidden.
First of all, let's get your icons back :)
Go to "my computer", and select "tools -> folder options". On the new box that comes up, select "view". Then, search for an option that says something like "show hidden files". Check that, select apply and close the box. That'll make your icons come back, "blured". That means they are hidden. Just go to their properties, and deselect "hidden".
Then, do the process i mentioned above again, and deselect the option "show hidden files".

Ehh... How have you solved the problem with not being able to click the windows (Close, minimize, hide)???
Curt: notice you can also place that bar on the left or on the right of the screen, where it won't affect the buttons on the caption on the windows.

Oh yes it can!

General Software Discussion / Phishtank
« Last post by jgpaiva on December 15, 2006, 09:22 AM »
I just downloaded opera and found that it now has a phishing filter. To test it, i went looking for a phishing archive.
That's how i made this cool find:
phishtank

Disclaimer: please notice that this is a phishing archive. If you don't know what phishing is, please read this article first. Do not introduce any personal information in any site you find through this page, PLEASE!

What is PhishTank?

PhishTank is a collaborative clearing house for data and information about phishing on the Internet. Also, PhishTank provides an open API for developers and researchers to integrate anti-phishing data into their applications at no charge.

Screenshot-06_12_15,15_19_41.png

I found it very interesting because it allowed me to know how good opera's filter is (it's pretty darn good ;) ), and also to know exactly how this thing works.
I must say I'm impressed with the work some phishers put into these sites, some of them look really genuine!!

Pretty cool, Skrommel!
I suggest you try the app skrommel mentioned.
Even though it consumes more memory and doesn't allow buttons to be dragged out of the start bar, it is way more updated (still maintained!), has support for groupped windows and has a feature that was requested some time ago here on DC as a coding snack: close a window on middle click. (oh, and did i say it looks good? :P)

It has no love for GridMove, though... Might be time to update gridmove.. :(

Featured on this newsletter and on this thread and this thread.
Generated quite a fuss about it, because of its strange rules about licensing ;)

superboyac:
You don't need to learn ahk. The best way is to make a simple .bat file. Just write the followin in a .txt file:
NET STOP <name of one service to stop>
NET STOP <name of another service to stop>
and such, then change it's extension to .bat, and then put a shortcut to it in the startup group.
It's the best way, using ahk here is definitelly overkill ;)
You only need to know the names of the services to stop, but i'm sure you know that :)

I still have the program's installer (zip), for anyone interested.

Developer's Corner / Re: What non-programming tools do you use for programming?

Paper, definitelly.
I keep a huge pile of used paper got from old schoolwork, bad prints and such. I always use this paper to draw my ideas, mostly to keep me from forgetting stuff, which still happens quite frequently :(
I'd love to have a white board, but it has two problems: lack of portability (i often spend the weekend at my parents') and it takes too much space (if i want to have a decent one, i can't fit it in any wall :( )
