Living Room / Stevia - the nocal nonsweetener sweetener (herb)
« Last post by mouser on August 16, 2006, 11:16 AM »
This seems as good an article as any to mention www.slashfood.com, a cool website that discussed cool foods.

Stevia is not a sweetener that is approved for use by the FDA. It is actually classified as a dietary supplement, an herb, that happens to be sweeter than sugar and can be - and is - used as a sweetener. It is all natural, has no calories (or carbs) and is getting more and more popular, though it makes up only a small portion of the non-sugar sweetener market.

Mike-O-Matic Blog Entry: Model for an Open Source Corporation

Mike Arace writes very well on software; his latest blog entry looks at the idea of an open source small business.

Small businesses need to find ways to maximize the amount of productive work they can get out of a day, and do it without spending a lot of money. If there were a way to organize a company along open-source principles that would improve the work/money ratio, it would be a big deal.
So what would an open source corporation look like?

General Software Discussion / Good Logo Creation Tools?
« Last post by mouser on August 16, 2006, 10:48 AM »
I thought people might post some good Logo making tools..

Here's one mentioned today on http://www.larkware.com/:
GreenBox Logo Creator - http://www.studio-v5...m/greenbox/index.htm

mycaps Screenshot - 001 , 10_47_AM , Aug 16 2006_thumb.png

And a well known one, LaughingBird The Logo Creator 5 - http://www.thelogocreator.com/

mycaps Screenshot - 002 , 10_47_AM , Aug 16 2006_ver001_thumb.png

Those are both commercial.

Anyone know any others? Should we include some box-art creation tools?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Question on license
« Last post by mouser on August 16, 2006, 10:25 AM »
Techincally our software is free/donationware for personal use, but we welcome business customers, and we are happy to issue site-wide business licenses.

For site-wide business licenses, I generally ask for $25, plus $1 to $2 per computer that would be using the program, depending on the number of licenses (figure anything < 100 users would be $2 per license).

(You dont need each user to enter their own license code, a simply file in the program directory will make the program and any future versions licensed forever.  We can provide a custom installer for large orders).

We are happy to provide some special support for business licensees, and are happy to discuss adding custom features, etc. and provide a formal contract.

Feel free to email me to discuss further: [email protected]

techTAGG - digg like site with revenue sharing

interesting idea though i'm not sure success in this market has anything to do with anything but existing market share and chaotic random fluctuations in the matrix of space and time. but i really do like the idea that ad revenue is split with users who submit stories.

techTAGG is an alternative to other user driven technology related news sites! However our primary focus is on technology related news from main stream medias and blogs.

techTAGG allows you to decide which news should make it to the front page and how it should reach the front page.

Our primary focus is technology. We want to get technology related news to the front page. If you are a blogger then feel free to submit your blog stories to our site as well.

We are also the first user driven site that does profit sharing. Your adsense ads will be displayed 50% of the time for all the stories you submit. More exposure and more money for you. Now this is a real user incentive.

We have setup techTAGG so that the system allows our active members to share adsense revenue.

The site displays an adsense ad on the top space of each page. We are currently using Google Adsense to serve relevant ads in that space. As an active member you can submit your Google Adsense publisher code in your profile section.

Our system will then publish your Google Adsense for the links/stories you submit. We randomly display your ad about 50% of the time. Our ads will share the other 50% with you.

from an AI standpoint, GO remains a huge challenge where chess has basically been solved with fast hardware and small improvements on brute force searching.

One of the coolest things about this is the hierarchical tree of synonym roots so that you can go exploring.  It's not obvious but you can double click on words in the root tree to go deeper and deeper.

Hard to describe in words.  maybe josh can make a screencast.  definitely has to be tried to experience it.  And I love the new streamlined user interface

well i think it's a great idea to be able to put tons of pictures in a virtual 3d environment you can navigate, and it looks cool.  Doubly nice if you can use some gps-like system to automatically tag and place them where they belong.

Having said that,
I don't find the idea all that innovative.

But even more:
That video gives me a very stong of people who are living in a fantasy world of hype, how they are changing the world and creating new realities, etc.  Come on guys, this is one of those things where a 13 year old kid with a year off from school could do as good a job, and these guys probably have 100 million and team of 20 people in an office with jelly bean machines on each floor of their hip office building.

Living Room / Drawspace - Art Lessons (some free, some not)
« Last post by mouser on August 15, 2006, 12:59 PM »
This is kinda cool - the membership thing sounds reasonable.  I like the idea that you can still get one free lesson of your choice each month even if you choose never to pay.  All by one artist (Brenda Hoddinott).

FREE MEMBERSHIP
A basic membership is completely free – and allows you access to all articles in the A-Resources section, as well as one free lesson of your choice each month. We are currently reviewing our bandwidth usage and site costs, and may change this to 2 free lessons per month.
Many of our members are very happy with this option for an indefinite period of time, and continue to enjoy the additional features on the site, such as the gallery and the forum for no cost whatsoever.

PREMIUM MEMBERSHIP
After you have been a member for a while and are completely satisfied and happy with what you find here, you are offered an opportunity to upgrade your basic membership to a Premium membership. If you choose to not become a Premium member, your free membership will still continue for as long as you wish!
A $20, three-month subscription (renewable if you wish), provides you with immediate, complete, unlimited access to the over 100 lessons on the site, as well as the 3-4 new lessons posted each month for the duration of your membership. You can either download or view all lessons on the site, whenever you want, and as often as you want. A Premium membership also entitles you to improved forum and gallery benefits.

yes this is an interesting concept..
my feeling about it would depend on what the author made you do to get a license - but it's definitely a promising idea in terms of an alternative to money if a user has time but not money.
