General Software Discussion / The Great Software List Site Gets a Big Update
« Last post by mouser on August 21, 2006, 02:44 PM »
From zaine ridling (one of our favorite members!) who runs the Great Software List:

...
But after sinking time into almost 150 apps over the past five months, the Great Software List is now updated with some kickass apps! I added a new Usenet, P2P/File Sharing Tools section, found/updated 40 fantastic new programs, and managed to ditch 65 old ones for various reasons — unaddressed security issues, lack of development, overpriced in latest version, somehow it got shitty, and so on. I’m excited and completely exhausted.

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: perform random URL queries (Random Submitter)
« Last post by mouser on August 21, 2006, 01:38 PM »
it looks like Scott was ahead of his time, today I saw this:
http://mrl.nyu.edu/~dhowe/TrackMeNot/

TrackMeNot runs in Firefox as a low-priority background process that periodically issues randomized search-queries to popular search engines, e.g., AOL, Yahoo!, Google, and MSN. It hides users' actual search trails in a cloud of indistinguishable 'ghost' queries, making it difficult, if not impossible, to aggregate such data into accurate or identifying user profiles. TrackMeNot integrates into the Firefox 'Tools' menu and includes a variety of user-configurable options.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: wrt v1.55.02 discussion
« Last post by mouser on August 21, 2006, 01:00 AM »
i messed up with 1.55.02 and the about box was disabled; it was fixed soon after with v 1.55.03.

old fashioned folder nodes:
if you create a COMMAND node (not folder contents), but instead of specifying a command, specify a folder.
(you can hold control key and click on folder button to browse for folder),
it will more properly choose name, hint, icon for the folder,
and now will open that folder when you click on that button.

the purpose here is when you want to have a button to open a folder using your normal file explorer.

Living Room / Thoughts on What's Wrong with the Business End of Blogging..
« Last post by mouser on August 20, 2006, 01:55 AM »
I know I'm not the only one that finds Robert Scoble painful to read (http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/).

Does being so over the top in terms of being self-absorbed, name-dropping, self-promoting, self-hyping, etc., really help people in business?  Personally I find it almost unbearable.  Does this stuff help them get business, or are they naturally this way (or both?)

It's not that I don't believe in being proud of your skills and achievements and being able to express that, but basically what these people are in a whole different universe of self-promotion.  Someone please tell me these blogs just a more subtle form of satire produced by the Onion?

Is there a word for people who sound like they are about to explode from giddiness about how many rich people they are meeting?  I'd like to propose we introduce one: "Scobler: Someone who becomes ecstatic about meeting rich/powerful people so they can mention that they know them"

Actually what really made me finally post about Scoble was this quote on his blog today:

I remember meeting Adriana Foley, the blogger who keeps 17 blogs, including the one on Linday Lohan. She actually says she hates doing the Lohan blog, but that’s what pays the bills so she does that to fund her other blogging.

I guess this is what we've come to - people blog now for the money, even when they hate what they are blogging about.  And it doesn't even raise an eyebrow.  Hey, if you find yourself writing a blog about something you hate just to make money off the blog - do us all a favor and find a different job.

i just finished watching the video of this.
if you are in academia you owe it to yourself to watch the video they added of their fake talk.. you'll recognize all the mannerisms and adlibs that people give while presenting a talk, but this time the material is completely made up and nonsense.  Great fun.

Developer's Corner / Winning the attention lottery - nice blog piece
« Last post by mouser on August 18, 2006, 06:47 PM »
Mark at ChezLark comments on Seth Godwin's Blog today and both capture what i fear is wrong with the web today:

http://www.chezlark.com/?p=748
http://sethgodin.typ...welcome_to_shuf.html

...
Driving the car yesterday, I realized that I haven't listened to any of my Elvis Costello records in a while. The reason, it turns out, is that they hadn't been picked out for me by the magic of shuffle. I've got enough music on my hard disk that some of it has become invisible.

The same thing is true, times a million, with websites. Every blog, every site is invisible... until it comes up on shuffle. The shuffle of reddit or digg or a cross-reference in someone else's rss feed.

The page that Ron and I did was #1 on Digg and Delicious yesterday, at least for a little bit. And the traffic was huge. It really is like winning the attention lottery.

And that's what has happened to all of us. The local newspaper never had to worry about an attention lottery--everyone in town read the paper. Today, because it's become molecuralized, our attention flits around, shuffled by one automated (or handbuilt) editor or another.
...

Lark says:
This is actually bad, I think. The current crop of meta-portals like reddit, digg, del.icio.us et al are mass-popularity contests, and mass-popularity contests seem to always end up emphasizing flashy novelty, curious factoids, inflammatory extremism, or tales of freakish happenings or people.

This is a short article about a new web company. Kiko, that put itself up for bid on ebay (ie they want out of the business), and why.  Lot's of good comments at the bottom of the piece as well.

I'm not sure i agree with everything in the piece.  One of the things that's going to make life particularly hard for these web 2.0 companies is that the nature of google is such that, in my view, is such that they are having a great run by introducing new services which do not need to make money or be supported in the long run.  They need only to keep introducing cool web services and keep the press beast fed, and their search money will keep building.  That's not to say they don't do great stuff, but it is to say that as soon as some web service idea gets some attention, they may just want to buy or produce a competitor just to get the attention... Weird situation.

Lessons From The Death Of A Web 2.0 Startup:
Google Is The New Microsoft: Back in the day, lots of software companies made sure that their business models kept them out of the cross-hairs of Microsoft. They didn’t want to get stomped on. Today, though this is still the case in some sectors, Google is a much more formidable (and scary) competitor. Google has all the power of a multi-billion dollar company, but a lot of the nimbleness and energy of a startup. With Google’s introduction of Google Calendar, Kiko really didn’t have a chance with it’s original business model.

Neat donationware utility.

Very similar to: Skrommel's IdleMute

Like listening to music or audiobooks in bed? Then this is for you! Goodnight timer reduces the sound volume of your computer in a given amount of time and speed and then shuts down your computer.

Living Room / Dead 2.0 Blog: Anti-hyping Web 2.0 since 2006

I'm really enjoying this new blog, Dead 2.0:

Recent Article: "12 Web 2.0 CEOs, 2 Stragglers, 5 Questions, 10 Responses"

A week or so ago a video of Web 2.0 CEOs being interviewed by Arrington made the rounds. I posted here, as I felt the video was a little too much propaganda, and not enough substance (and check out the 3-minute version too).  I also issued a bit of a ‘challenge‘ to the interviewees (and others), asking some ‘meaty’ questions.  Interestingly enough, I got quite a few responses (individuals identified below), and here they are:

Also check out his series "Ask Skeptic’s Mom"
where he asks his mom to describe things like RSS.

leaving aside some of the quibbles people have had with the music..
perhaps we should show some appreciation for a podcast that was so much more professional and polished than the previous podcasts, and for the work mukestar and JavaJones put into this on their own time.  We wouldn't want them to think we are a bunch of ungratefulls.  I for one thought they took the podcast to a whole new level of quality.

Living Room / Top Ten Video Sharing Websites
« Last post by mouser on August 17, 2006, 05:21 PM »
Top Ten Video Sharing Websites:
Long article and comparison of sites, with emphasis on business models.

Among other things, 2006 will be remembered as the year online video really became something you share, not just something you log onto and watch. Sure, there will always be a place for viral videos that get emailed to dozens of friends and coworkers. I mean, who ever gets tired of watching a cat flush a toilet or seeing a skateboarder render himself infertile?
...
With all that going on, it's definitely worth looking at who stands out in this ridiculously crowded space. Since popular opinion does matter online – where the consumer experience is hugely important – we thought it'd be useful to rank some of the Internet's most popular video sharing sites by how they performed from the point of view of someone wanting to post videos rather than just look at someone else's.
