Non-Windows Software / Tails needs to boot to create a bootable USB
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 04, 2014, 09:31 AM »
Has anyone figured out the piggyback scheme used by Tails?

I followed the instructions to create the first bootable USB.  I gather I'm supposed to boot that, then use the Linux install program to write to a USB drive in another port to create the true Tails with storage etc..

Where I get stuck is I press F12 to change the boot order to the USB.  Then I get a prompt that says
boot:

with no instructions.  If I hit Enter the prompt just rewrites itself on the next line.  I must have missed something.  :)

I think the FF release cycle is just too fast.  And it's driving the spin-offs to keep up.  Seems like if it's FF or Pale Moon or whatever, it works for a couple of updates, then it's funky for a few.

A lot of time is wasted trying out supposedly stable versions only to uninstall after a bad patch.

I think the cause of the malaise is much simpler.  Think back to when you were a kid skipping down the street.  You were happy for no particular reason.  In fact it was your default state of mind.  Adults smiled to see you skipping along so care free.

Then one day as you skipped along you encountered a tall man in a gray suit with gray felt hat.  He gave you such a disgusted look.  You slow down in reaction.  Then the gray man says "You are tool old to be skipping" all mean and nasty.

From that day on your life sucked.  You worried about things that never bothered you before.  Well I'm here to tell you that was no accident.  The gray man is no ordinary person.  He's a time traveler and his mission is to conduct hostile psychological operations against the middle class people of The United States.

Being from the future he could see that it was only necessary to spoil the childhoods of the middle class kids to generate the impetus for all the wars, famines, depressions, inflationary periods etc that sapped the resources of the middle class.

The only way to turn back the clock on the downfall of the middle class is to go back in time and skip down the street no matter what anyone thinks or says about it!

With that in mind, think i'll give CF another look.
The creator of SyncPlaces really expresses well my feelings with regards to Mozilla and recent changes in Firefox.

I've been trying to adjust to Australis but i really do find myself more "cornered" so to speak.
It's a similar sensation to when i use Google Chrome (or any Chrome based browser).

I'm using Classic Theme Restorer mainly because I'm using Glass on Windows 8.  Otherwise I'd have to install TabMix Plus and set custom background color for tabs to read the labels.

I never liked Ribbons.  But I got used to chromium.  It launched so fast I put up with the wrench then the hash mark or whatever it is.  I went back to FF once I saw it had speed comparable to chromium using a single exe. On Firefox first thing I do is enable the Menubar and BookmarksBar.

Just gave Cyberfox a spin - at first it looked spiffy but after syncing with Mozilla, everything just went quirky and toolbars were out of order. I have about 20 addons with Firefox that work just fine there. Don't feel like going through a tedious process of elimination with Cyberfox.

I don't use sync.  So if that triggers a bug I wouldn't notice.  I use FEBE and SyncPlaces to sync to a local folder.  Now and then I upload via FTP.  At this point I only have the Laptop.  To update FF Portable on my Windows 7 VM I just drag and drop the entire FF Portable folder.

Edit: That reminds me.  I should install CF on the x64 Windows VM as default browser.

A quote I read somewhere recently:
"Virus check complete. All viruses functioning normally."

Heh.  A new product could be Intel VO.  No, not a whiskey.     Virus Optimization.  ;)

I conducted a fun (and very telling experiment) with MSE a couple months ago. I took an external hard drive and filled it with all sorts of 'sketchy' stuff...lots of viruses, trojans, malware, pupware, cracks and keygens.

MSE detected every single crack and keygen on the drive. Every other file MSE triumphantly declared as being clean. This should tell you what Microsoft's focus is when it comes to their 'security' software.

It would have ben interesting to let it find a crack of an MS product.  Then check the logs to see if it tried to call home.  ;)

You mean like when a bank forecloses? Yeah, you don't actually own your home until you have finished paying the bank for it, plus interest. In essence, as long as you still have a mortgage, you are renting the house from the bank, who is the real owner.

It would be nice if the mortgage could include some kind of annuity so that when it was paid off the annuity would automatically pay the property tax for the life of the owner.  If you sold the place then some prorated portion could be credited etc..

I wonder if any other countries have something along that line?

Edit:  On DRM it seems they are getting into more than just cancelling access to the media.  From posts I've seen(on DC I think) Winston Smith is there changing content dynamically.

Saffron seems to doing better today.. she seems much more herself.  Keep the positive thoughts coming.

Keep the good thought going.

I'm not sure about the second part but if you have an Explorer folder window open and an existing folder selected then an ahk script would be able to get the folder path(if it is a regular folder, not Computer or some other shell object) and chop off the path to the last backslash to get the local folder name.  It could use ShellExecute to run the batch file with the folder path as working directory etc..

So if that part is worth doing depends how much typing you have to do for the manual command prompt bit.  Only you would know if your time is better spent on the next stage or making the solved task a bit easier.  :)

I'm not familiar with SharePoint, so bear with me.  When you say you want the hotkey program or batch to start in the location you are in, what are you in exactly?  I'm wondering if there may be a way to use the clipboard to get the folder location or whatnot.

On the film thing, I wonder if directors like Q.T. don't like digital because the money men will pressure him to use it to hold down costs.  Also I wonder if it's possible that there are known formulas with film to get certain looks without experimenting.

In other words if Q.T. has to switch to digital will his standard bag of tricks no longer work without laboriously relearning how to get the effects?  I'm just speculating.

That video was cool.  The "lowering the ante to get in the game is a bad thing" argument was also made about PCs.  With an affordable machine on your own desk rather than renting computer time, and compilers that only cost a few hundred bucks, just about any schmuck can get into the Computer Programming game.  The old timers lament that this brings the going rate way down etc..

I suggested to a fellow street dweller that an Associate's Degree should be required for homeless people.  That would help keep the pretenders out of the racket.  The food lines are getting longer.  I see more and more new people walking along all dirty.  Some with shirttails and no pants.  We must raise the standard before it all goes to hell.  :)

IYF looks interesting.  I'll try it out.  :)

Edit: I use Everything Search but you never know when you might encounter a non NTFS file system.  :)

This kind of "evolution" is actively encouraged by distributors though.

Now if they just made Windows so it worked without having to know anything.  ;)

Good luck using a Windows style editor when your X won't start and you'll have to fix config files on the terminal when you never dug into vi/Vim or similar editors.

I agree.  Sometimes those little x applets that configure stuff don't work.  Even if x runs it's good if you can remember how to fix the startup scripts under /etc with a console editor.  I bet many newer Linux users just reinstall when it gets hosed.  If you mention a directory named /etc or the fstab file they give you a vacant stare.  :)

The thing with Vim is that it requires you are willing to spend the time and effort to learn to work entirely differently than you are used to.

The learning curve is what puts people off.  I used vi just enough to start doing repetitive tasks programmatically.  But it requires a commitment to keep your head into it.  I'm sure now there are many more Windows style editors for use in Linux.  It's easier to dodge learning vi or emacs or whatever.  :)

Not just this, but I notice a lot of video tutorials on the web where the author thinks if he clicks stuff and it works, what more could be asked for?  Trouble is all I see are little colored buttons or lines that hot track.  He clicks.  Something opens, then he clicks something else.  What any of it is cannot be discerned.  These video authors must have 27" monitors I'm thinking.  :)

Oh well.  :)

I don't see a list.  I see a slide show that I can't make out and a column of comments.

It could be my Laptop as I have to use ColorToggle sometimes.  But it's eluding me so far.  :)

Not to jump the gun, but on my second day I have to say I like it.  It seems to run as smooth as FF 27.0 Portable.  My AddOns all seem to work.

Edit:  The only annoyance so far.. no favicons.

Edit2:  This favicon reloader works with it:
