just when i thought it was time to stop believing in the myths. oh well, back to being confused and unsure of what to believe - just as well i can't really be bothered with all this tinkering - my pc appears to working at the moment so i'll leave it well alone.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Zoom Player - the all-in-one media player!
« Last post by nudone on July 19, 2006, 01:44 PM »
thanks for the review, Josh. unfortunately i don't really like zoom player - never seems to be the 'total' player it strives to be (the bugs you described would be enough to make me uninstall anyway).

i've pretty much followed the same path as javajones so currently i have winamp, mpc and vlc. mpc seemed fine for a long time but now takes a while to open up for certain files regardless of the settings i use for it, hence the use of vlc.

i've just installed kmplayer and i have to say that i'm very impressed with it so far - need to play with it for a while to know for sure but it looks very hopeful that it will replace mpc and vlc on my system. so thanks for mentioning it, javajones.

just checked something and i have a .mov file that will play okay in mpc but not vlc or kmplayer, so it looks like i'll be keeping mpc.

maybe i should try zoom player.  :D

i think it's a bit of a joke really that not one single player will do everything (even though many claim to), there's always something lacking or broken somewhere.

time to try the gui version of mplayer that abterix recommended - maybe that will do 'everything'.

fantastic. myth busting should be part of the everyday news reports - might reduce the stupidity of the planet. great to see a retort to all the needless xp tweaks (i think i can hear the cry of someone already declaring "tweak **** made my system quicker, so there" ).

ah, i see what you mean now, elpresi. automatically add the keywords - umm, no, i doubt acdsee can do that - i'll have a quick look but i can't remember seeing those kind of options.

it would be a useful feature to have - especially when considering your major point about moving to other managers.

i guess programs like acdsee don't have this feature as it's a way of locking you in to their software (or is it just an innocent oversight).

i've made 'my' grid so i'm happy now. including several grids probably does negate the need of a grid editor - providing there is always a way of manually creating a grid inside the script for those picky people like myself.
3008
will there be a different way of creating grids - the current way is doing my head in. i shall persevere...

I did try the latest ACDSee and although ACDSeePro has an IPTC editor I believe it will not embed keywords into IPTC. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

i believe it can, elpresi.

think i might give 'portfolio 8' another look, app - tried an older version but something didn't agree with me at the time.

i've yet to make the transition to using 'metadata' even though i tried to convince myself that it was an important feature when i was reviewing acdsee - i guess folder heirarchies and structure are something ingrained into me.

Am I the only one who hates the sound of his own voice? jeez, I sound like a dufus.

no, i hate the sound of your voice too, Zaine...

... you know i'm joking (i hope).

but seriously, i've yet to meet anyone that didn't believe their own voice sounded odd - well, on this subject most people think their voice isn't just odd but quite awful. if i heard someone say that they actually liked the sound of their own voice i'd consider them a certified egomaniac.

maybe it's just something we all have to get used to - after a while i would hope that ones own voice stops sounding so alien, or perhaps, because you'll always hear your own voice resonating through your skull more times than you'll hear it through a speaker system you'll always think it sounds strange.

this is not to say that some people do have horrible voices - my mother's voice sounds like an out of tune shriek - and now she has lost a tooth at the front of her jaw she makes a disturbing air sucking sound too.

it drives me insane.

i may be disrespectful but it's all true.

my apologies, jgpaiva.

it appears the problem i described about the taskbar not working how it normally can was due to the fact i was using on older version of gridmove. i've since tried it with the latest version and things do appear to work just as they should  :D

i was just using an older version as it just seemed a bit simpler for me to change a few things but i think i've now realised what i needed to do with the latest version to get the same result - i just have to keep deleting the .ini file when i make the changes.

as for the keyboard shortcuts being the quickest way of using gridmove - depends on what you are doing, mouser.

this has been discussed before and it's one of those no real right or wrong answers.

if you are sat there happily working away with your hand(s) at the keyboard then using a key shortcut is going to be quicker than the mouse.

if you are sat at the computer, mouse in one hand, head propped up by your other arm - then having to break away from that position to find the keyboard isn't as fast as just dragging with the mouse. maybe i'm in a minority but i often forget that i have a left hand whilst using the computer - having to press 'alt' or 'ctrl' sometimes just winds me up - other times i have to use both hands (forget about typing), using adobe products would be very tiresome without one hand on the keyboard and the other on the mouse.

it's just whatever feels natural to do at the time - keyboard shortcuts in gridmove would be great and i'm sure i'd use them - sometimes.

my suggested way of using the screen edges as triggers has to be the slowest way of using gridmove - but speed isn't everything - i'd say whatever feels comfortable and intuitive is the more important requirement - heck, sometimes just what looks nice can overrule everything else.

nice to know that your font list is okay to use, tomos.

oh dear, found a slight bug with the 'edge trigger' method i've been favouring - i have the depressing feeling that it's something that can't be rectified either.

as i've mentioned before, i have the taskbar at the top of the screen and set to autohide. windows has a built in capability that allows you to drag files onto the taskbar - drag onto a 'program button' on the taskbar and pause and the associated program will come into focus - drag onto a 'blank' are of the taskbar and all running program minimise to allow the desktop to be seen.

unfortunately this inbuilt windows capability stops working when 'gridmove' is working in 'edge trigger' mode. disabling the 'edge trigger' allows things to work normally.

boo hoo.

looks like i'll have to forget about the 'edge trigger' method - unless there's a way to solve the problem, jgpaiva.

maybe there could be a toggle key to turn the 'edge trigger' off - can't say that's a brilliant idea but i'm guessing that trying to make the 'edge trigger' method work with the windows taskbar in the way that i've described might be too much of a headache for you.

i think it's time for me to get to like the 'titlebar' drag method.

thanks again, jgpaiva - fingers crossed that you might have an idea about it.
3014
must say, great idea.

reminds me of what Dave Allen would say, "Goodnight, and may your god go with you."

i have another request - though this one might be straying away from what 'gridmove' is for...

could we have a trigger zone for making a window 'stay on top', i.e. move it to the zone to make it stay on top - move back onto the zone to make it no longer stay on top.

i know there are plenty of little utils that will do this sort of thing already but i've always ended up removing the ones i've tried - i don't like the idea of adding extra buttons to title bars or selecting from menus. instead, i think a 'drop/trigger' zone would be a nice way of implementing a 'stay on top' feature. preferably a zone at the top of the screen. hopefully this can just be done when you implement the ability to run an .ahk script instead of moving/resizing a window.

i've rediscovered the downside to the small icon view.

i'm don't know if things behave in an odd manner when you have the icons listed down the left side of the screen but if you position them in various places (like i have in the screenshot) they lose their 'exact' location, at least, when using 'wintidy'.

you may think this isn't really a big deal - you can restore the saved icon layout afterall. unfortunately it changes the spacing between the icons so that the position you originaly had set the icons probably just won't work again - i'm wondering if this has anything to do with long file/folder names being displayed.

this may just be a side effect of using 'deskview' and then 'wintidy' - they probably have different icon spacings - or so it appears at the moment.

i was wrong - wintidy will save and restore a small desktop icon layout. i probably just got bored of using it before - i'll use it for a while and see if a conflict comes up.

that was using the combination of the 'deskview' util you found and 'desktop restore' not tried wintidy yet - i think i might have an older version of it somewhere that i can try, but i'm guessing that 'wintidy' can't remember the layout of small icons - that's the only reason i can think of that made me dismiss it before.

fantastic. i look forward to seeing the result.

if you use 'desktop restore' (which i blogged about here) i think you'll be able to save the icon positions - not tried logging off and back on so i guess the icons will just default back to the left hand side but at least you can 'restore' their position wich a couple of clicks.

it would be nice to see a more combined method...

'deskview' wasn't actually the program i was thinking of but i can see that it does the job so that's good.

i'm sure someone will know the name of the other one (might not be freeware). i remember that you could save different icon layouts and and there were a few other options too - like you could 'zigzag' the icons across the screen.

i think we've even discussed it on the forum - i can't remember why i stopped using it - might have had a strange side effect or conflict.

anyone know what it is?
