How many mail accounts?  If 5 or less, SurgeMail is ideal, and free for up to 5 users.  10 users costs $175 USD, and it scales up from there.

It does everything you ask for, and is incredibly rock-solid & reliable.  Remote administration via locally-served web page interface.  Low resource footprint, too: I run one on an old Penitum-II box with 256M of RAM and it's very happy.

Highly recommended.

Oooh, Cray.  In a past life I worked for a NASA contractor, and got to visit the computing center at JSC (Building 40, IIRC).  They had a Cray XMP at the time... 1990?  It was still a powerful beast; they used a "regular" IBM mainframe as the front end for it.

What'd they use it for?  Among other things, real-time airflow simulation of the shuttle's wing surfaces.

Whole thing is probably less powerful than the machine on my desk now...

Poor support for .FON files on linux is one more thing that keeps me on Windows I guess, I'd hate to have to use another font than Dina :(

Not to be dense, but what is the big appeal of raster fonts?  They don't scale, they look like crap at anything but their designed resolution... so, why?

Non-US residents, you may cover your eyes now.  The following is strictly an American exercise in overreaction...

According to the always excellent Ars Technica, the US government is considering new legislation that would treat the internet as a terrorist tool.

http://arstechnica.c...grown-terrorism.html

ars1.jpg

This isn't the only article out there on HR 1955 (the Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007), but I found it the most level-headed.  Despite a small technical flaw (Ars Technica reports that Congress is considering the bill, when in actual fact it's passed Congress and is now to be considered by the Senate) they do a reasonable job of covering the relevant bits.  For instance, there's only one section pertaining to the internet, and it's basically an acknowledgement that terrorists could use the 'net for bad things.

However, it makes me squirm when I think about wrinkly old men who have their email read to them considering technological issues.  It would be all too easy to take the foot-in-the-door this bill represents and kick it wide open.  The presumption of guilt before innocence is just a goose-step away.

Hopefully, sanity will prevail once the net-savvy lobbies have their say.  Hopefully.

But even if that happens, and a modified version passes without specifically mentioning the 'net, funds will be allocated to form "research groups" that will look into how the internet can be used to facilitate terrorism.  Along with ways to detect and deter, one would assume.

Feeling safer?  Maybe not.  But if you're an internet security consultant, prepare for good times.

I think it would be cool if they could add a small G-sensor to disk drives, and hook them up to a small piezo speaker so they would issue a blood-curdling scream if they fall to the floor.

"Yes Captain, I believe he is in the holodeck, ah, driving a truck."

"I see.  Is that a euphemism for anything, Mister Riker?"

"Yes sir, I believe it is."

Developer's Corner / Re: Dina in TTF format?
« Last post by Ralf Maximus on November 29, 2007, 12:59 AM »
From my experience, there's not enough data in a .FON file to do an automatic conversion.  The font converters I have (TransType, CrossFont) won't even try.

There's plenty of monospaced .TTF fonts out there, many similar in weight and appearance to Dina.  Could you live with one of those?

UPDATE: Figured I'd toss in a reference to my favorite programmer's font comparison chart:

So long as folks are clear on the distinction between White Hat Hackers and the Black Hats, I don't see a problem.  Educating the public has been iffy, but I *think* most informed adults recognize that hacking is often a positive, beneficial experience.

If nothing else, hackers have replaced the stereotype of the crazy basement inventor in popular media.

Thus his rant on hackers and hacking is misplaced, IMHO.

Hang a few of these up to inspire and/or confuse your office mates:

Even if your coworkers are Trek-impaired the memes have worked their way deeply into our cultural memory.  If you still get blank stares, treat it as an opportunity to explain that Deep Space Nine wasn't the first Star Trek show, that Yeoman Rand was a raging drug addict in real life, or that Kirk never actually uttered the words, "Beam me up, Scotty."

And yes, William Shatner really was a dick to work with, sometimes.

Remember AutoPatcher?  The free alternative to Windows Update that Microsoft had shut down?  Well, they're baaaaaack...

http://cybernetnews....her-windows-updater/

Autopatcher.jpg

It's a brand new app, and an early beta so don't expect 100% bug-free goodness yet.  And it only supports  Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003.  But I don't care -- AutoPatcher's back!
