I personnaly use winrar since a long time ago, for many reasons, including the quite unique recovery feature that saved me once.  On top of that, I also use OCB (one click backup) which is a clever GUI over winrar GUI.  There is a free version that is very usable of OCB, the pro is currently discounted.  The main advantage of OCB is the management of various profiles (sets of files to be archive, where, how, etc.).

The only drawback of winrar occurs when I have to use a PC where it is not installed, and there is no "official" portable version.

MerleOne, you can use the "fsekrit.portable" approach to have the editor executable created in the same folder as the "document" itself - but it will still involve creating a temporary exe. Unfortunately there isn't really any way around this, a temporary exe is necessary in order to update the main exe. I've been pondering whether I should add a "installed" mode where a global installed fSekrit.exe is used as editor, but there's a few problems with that approach as well.

BTW, since I installed Avast V6 free, I keep getting annoyed by messages related to Avast Sandbox : it usually insists on executing it within a sandbox, and no rule to prevent this can be easily defined since the application is launched from the user temp folder with a different name each time, such as fSekrit-02C5.exe. 

I could disable the sandbox altogether, but since most alarms come from fsekrit, maybe something else could be done ?

The scary thing was I had 35 per cent free space, and the XP built-in defragmenter still wouldn't defrag the files.

Just out of curiosity, do you know which file had 20K worth of fragments. Some sort of database? Or was it your pagefile or MFT?

Reason I ask is because I've never had anything to remotely with that monster of yours. And I handle servers and multi-user environments where some files get clobbered and frag up pretty badly in the course of a work week.

Always something new for me to learn about.

And it's even more Defrag Day since IOBit released its free SmartDefrag V2 beta 3.00 that adds many features compared to the V1.5 (including boottime defrag).  V2 beta 2.00 was quite buggy, this one seems better so far (file exclusion based on size works now).  On the negative side, there is a new driver running, smartdefrag.sys, that stays active even if the application is not running and worse, was also remaining there after uninstallation (last point was with beta 2.00).

Seems to be "Day of Defrag" today since Softbuy is proposing a newcomer in the defrag area, Advanced Defrag.

BTW, one of the the reasons why I suspect JetDefrag is derived from JKDefrag/MyDefrag is that the options are exactly the same.

Hi all,

I have a strong hint that JetDrive is based on Mydefrag/JKDefrag algorithm.  Most new defraggers just propose a new GUI, and some extra features like a GUI for chkdsk as it seems the case here.  For real innovation (else than MyDefrag which seems to have very good reviews), there is Raxco/Perfectdisk, Disktrix, O&O, IObit, etc.

Anyone to second the link with JKDefrag ?

Not blazingly fast, compared to XYPlorer, especially in the find file area.  But my major gripe with DO is that it requires a lot of configuration before being suited to your needs.  I have not decided yet to jump in (I was an Opus user back on the Amiga ... and have a V6.5 license on Windows).

Hi,

I just tried it quickly.  I removed it quite instantly :
- Ugly interface : on my system, the squares that represent groups of clusters are surrounded by a "way to wide" black outline, which has an absolute thickness, so when squares are reduced, the black is everywhere.  I guess it depends on your local windows settings though
- After a complete optimization, zone mode was activated, I used my PC to make just a few changes, then restarted a complete optimization, it took almost as much time as the first optim.  So re-defragmentation doesn't take into account it was already optimized. 

For this, I much prefer Puran 7.1 Free or even IOBit SmartDefrag 1.5 (not V2, still beta & buggy).
