Hmm ok, thanks for the clarification.

As a matter of principle, I am against blindly entering my cc info and pressing a big button without being able to see the correct price ;).

Click "Review Order" and you will see the adjusted total.

It won't let me press that button without entering my credit card details. Would be nice if you could see the price without doing that.

If you are using betas and planning to moving to the production release, make sure to grab a beta license in the next few days. This will be your 50% off coupon for the license.

I think I got my beta license last year sometime, I just upgraded to the latest version and tried clicking the menu item to license, which got me the purchase page with a purchase code starting with "BETA-" filled in.

The price still says $20 for a personal and $40 for a business license though?

I'm using the guest additions that were installed with LM here (as far as I know they've been included for a while in Ubuntu and LM?), works fine for mouse integration and shared folders and such.
305
I installed it on a VM and it crashes VirtualBox every time it tries to shutdown. I'm not sure what went wrong. VirtualBox is working just fine with my other VMs.

Hmm, I just gave this a try a couple of times, but no crashing...this was after having done an initial update of packages.

FWIW, the VirtualBox here is 4.2.22 on Gentoo.

No problems here either, running LM 64-bit inside VirtualBox on Win7.

That's great news, mint has worked well for testing here .

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Jibz on May 31, 2014, 03:03 AM »
Being a happy XY/x² user, I'm still looking for a good "orthodox" file manager (Norton Commander clone) for certain tasks. Required: SFTP support, no way to disable the second panel (I want to force myself into using it correctly), a decent GUI (no Total Commander stuff pls).

I think if your only gripe with TC is how the GUI looks, you owe it to yourself to fix it up a little and try it again. Use a decent font like Consolas 10pt, change the color scheme, and add Notepad2 (set exit on Esc in its options) as the F4 editor. (I also added keyboard shortcuts so Ctrl-Left and Ctrl-Right change current drive, and Alt-anything to start searching, but those a preference I picked up from Dos Navigator.)

Orthogonal file managers are about a way of navigating the file system that has worked for almost 30 years, and while TC is ugly in its default setup, it can provide a very good implementation of this way of working with files. Basically, if you have to use the mouse, there's something going wrong.

Developer's Corner / Re: About the Python 2 to 3 Transition...
« Last post by Jibz on May 27, 2014, 01:58 PM »
(Note: I've coded Python in both v2 and v3 - and I really can't see where v2 is provably better. But I'm not a real programmer so that might be attributable to ignorance on my part. My clients, however, are very qualified programming professionals. And both started migrating their codebases over to using Python-3 as soon as it was deemed stable enough to do so. So make of that what you will.)

I would imagine the people who program by writing code have little issues with writing for either version, but the people who program by downloading other peoples libraries and gluing them together will have a problem if google doesn't give them something to solve their problem all in the same version of Python :P.

I've been using Lightroom for managing my photos lately, and I was looking for an option to automatically create a snapshot in the Develop module whenever I export a photo for upload to services like 500px.

To explain briefly; Lightroom is non-destructive and stores a history of changes you apply to your photo. You can create a named snapshot of a certain state, so you can go back to it later after making other changes. It can be nice to have a snapshot of the state a photo was in when you exported it.

So, I thought this would be a good opportunity to try writing my first plug-in for Lightroom .

Many plug-ins seem to be commercial, or at least contain compiled Lua files that you cannot modify or learn from, so I decided to make this one available for free under an open-source license:

https://github.com/jibsen/ExportSnapshot

Fair warning: This is my first Lightroom plug-in, and I started it yesterday, so be sure to back up your catalog if you try it out :-[.

General Software Discussion / Re: Sell your MS Office 2010?
« Last post by Jibz on May 15, 2014, 12:38 AM »
I use both: Softmaker Office is much more compatible with MS Office. Libre Office's compatibility is so-so to poor in my experience. Softmaker's main weakness in comparision to Libre (again in my experience) is it's search - search steals focus, and doesnt allow you to edit, you've got to close it (search) to do anything - and then open it again to continue.

Once you've searched for something and closed the search, you can press F3 to search again without having to open the search dialog.

The following seemed to work under a *NIX:

Thanks, unfortunately that gives some proportional default substitution font instead. Perhaps there is a problem with bitmap fonts as well, I've emailed the author.

That's interesting -- I wonder what is causing the horrible red/blue fringing on vertical edges on my setup :(.

Jibz, your screenshots remind me of ClearType colouring/anti-aliasing.  Perhaps that's what is causing it?  For the record, I can't STAND ClearType at all; it always looks fuzzy and out-of-focus to me.

That could very well be the case, but I am not seeing these artifacts in other editors. Perhaps Textadept is choosing a bad renderer on my machine, but I can't find any option to change it, and I don't want to turn off ClearType systemwide just for one editor.

If only I could get Dina to work in Textadept :-[.

My biggest problem with Textadept is the font rendering on Windows. The following compares Textadept (dark theme) with Sublime (solarized theme), using the Source Code Pro and Consolas fonts:

According to the author, it's a problem with GTK on Windows, but I simply can't look at it for more than a few minutes without developing a headache -- it feels a bit like watching one of those anaglyph 3D images without wearing the glasses :(.

DC Gamer Club / WildStar - colorful MMO in open beta
« Last post by Jibz on May 11, 2014, 03:50 AM »
I couldn't find any mention of WildStar on the forum, and I must admit I hadn't heard about it myself until I was in the ESO beta, and some people were comparing them somewhere. I played it in a few of the beta weekends in the past month to see what it was like, and since it is currently in open beta (yes, anyone can get a code and try it until the 18th), I wanted to mention it.

WildStar is a MMORPG which was created by a group of developers from WoW. In some respects this shows, but both in a good and in a perhaps not so good way. On the surface, the colorful, playful, graphics and atmosphere reminds of WoW, but once you play a little, you see it is more like vanilla WoW then what we know today (and for people who played WoW for a long time, that is usually a good thing).

Things I like about it so far are the combat system, the paths feature, and that some things actually are hard and require skill (and well, after being in the ESO beta, something other than grey and brown is very appealing :P).

I don't think there is much point in me listing the things you can see on the homepage, and try out yourself if you like, so:

General Software Discussion / Re: 4 (Maybe more) Absolute top go-to programs
« Last post by Jibz on May 11, 2014, 03:19 AM »
I was a big fan of The Bat! for years, and I still think it's one of the best clients out there for "old-school" email use. I think I just got to the point, where for my personal use, there was no real change between versions, and I was still buying upgrades every year. I know I could just stick with the old version, but I always used the upgrade discounts. I tried Thunderbird at some point, and it worked fine for what I needed, plus had way better search at the time, so I figured I would stick with that and save the money.

My only real complaint about The Bat! was the proprietary format the mailboxes are stored in. You can't use things like MailStore for backups, and if something corrupts the mailbox you're pretty much screwed if you don't have a recent backup. As I remember it,  it was not straightforward getting your email out of The Bat! and into another program either.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Atom - A new editor is born
« Last post by Jibz on May 10, 2014, 04:24 AM »
I quite liked the idea of Textadept -- it's a bit like Sublime Text with Lua scripting instead of Python. It lacks the polish though, and on Windows it feels somewhat rough around the edges. Especially the text rendering was horrible (at least with my setup). I asked the author about it, but apparently it was a problem with GTK on Windows.

I don't know why, but I really enjoy reading about why people choose the text editors they use.
 ;)

I think it has partly to do with the fact that it's just a text editor, lol.  It's supposed to be this very plain thing, yet there are so many complex options and features, etc. to consider and we get all passionate about them.  Same goes for other software, I suppose, but I really have fun with the text editors.

I think it's also due to the fact that editing text is one of a few key activities in many professions (at least of DC people). It's also one where it seems to be very apparent how it could be improved (although the specifics seem to be quite individual).

The one improvement important to me would be efficient navigation and selection within text. Home/End and Ctrl+Left/Right just doesn't cut it. It's also the main reason why I'm experimenting with VIM again.

+1 to both of you ;D

And here's a short tutorial on find and replace:

Thanks.

1. Sequence number generation inside a file using Vim Macro
2. Repeat Vim Macro with different arguments

Didn't know that was possible, nice.

Developer's Corner / Re: Google not paying for OSS
« Last post by Jibz on May 07, 2014, 06:19 AM »
While the topic of this thread perhaps slightly misrepresents the scope of the article, I found it interesting. It is nice to see a discussion about licenses that takes a more pragmatic approach than the usual fights over ideology.

I've had trouble with the permissive vs. copyleft choice myself -- it is not only about what you believe OSS should be, it's also about to which extent you wish to limit the potential audience of your software in order to give yourself the opportunity to make some money from dual-licensing.

I always found it confusing that the licenses that most try to keep everything free (for certain values of free), in effect are the most commercial OSS licenses :-[.

Ten weeks ago we debuted Atom, the new text editor that's deeply programmable but also easy to use. Starting today, Atom is available for download to everyone–completely free and open source.

... still only for Mac though.

I guess I'm not all that sure what the argument is for using Vim in the Windows world - if Windows is the only OS you ever anticipate using.
It's probably not a bad thing to learn some Vim as an exercise in moving outside your comfort zone. Or for the personal satisfaction of being able to say "been there, done that." I've put enough time in to where I'm moderately comfortable using Vim. But it's more a hobby or a "builds character" exercise for me. Vim certainly wouldn't be my first choice if I needed an editor. Nor my second. Or even my third...

But that's me. YMMV. 8) ;D

If you read my initial post again, this is about experimenting with Vim to get to know it, and not about using Vim as your only editor ever ;D. I agree it is a bit of an oddball on Windows, but as you say, it's one of those things that are "nice to know", and which may come in handy if you ever have to do some work on *NIX.

Also, I feel I spend sufficient time in a text editor, that even smaller improvements in efficiency are worth exploring .
