I've posted 'Riddle', here;
https://www.donation...=50099.msg439664#top
That's in the wrong board to post in if you want responses -- it probably had about two views before you posted this link.
@moderators, would you consider moving the thread to the living room board?
302
I'd say the thread is very much on the topics of "going primitive with discursion into zettelkasten".

There always seems to be a fly in the ointment with every electronic device I purchase.
I reckon that's always (nearly always?) the case. I dont use earphones, so never came across the problem. But did have other problems with connectivity (and needing to reboot to recover). In fairness that problem seems to have been resolved at some stage, but it's not that I'd particularly recommend Moto -- but I would at least consider buying again.

When looking to purchase something, I generally start by reading the Amazon one star reviews. That can get depressing though, cause there doesnt seem to be anything out there that doesnt come with problems -- maybe a lot of that is to do with the minimal quality control these days.

The main thing I find disappointing is that the new Moto phones do not seem to want to improve on 720P resolution.  Such a big heavy phone should have 1080P FHD.

...

Another less than stellar "feature" of my e5 is that any photos I take look like total crap.  Streaming video isn't too bad if the WiFi has good bandwidth, but anything less than 1080P is unacceptable these days.

Well, it is their budget phone series, most manufacturers have a line that is 720p, ordinary camera, 2-3GB RAM, 16-32GB eMMC Flash, MTK or SD4xx SoC, etc, (eg. Samsung Galaxy A01) ... you'd need to move to their G series for better specs ... which is what they hope you do.
Yeah, I paid 240€ or so two years ago for a Moto G6.
Beyond 3GB RAM and 32GB, I dont know the specifications -- it does what I want and need (I dont play games so no idea how good there), and battery lasts over a day. I should have gotten 64GB, but do have a 128GB SD card for images etc.. But the screen is nice (could be brighter in day/sunlight), and is 1080 x 2XXX. Camera is quite good for stills (and at the time for its price bracket), no idea about video beyond there being no stabilisation.
I will never buy another phone with a glass back -- was cracked within a month.

But yeah, if you want a half-decent camera and display, you will have to move up in price. I see the one 4wd got is available here (.de) for under 200€ but couldnt find it on uk amazon...
@4wd, maybe you could let us know how the screen and camera/s fare (just generally -- I'll have a look at an in depth review at some stage). I presume you'll be ripping out the OS, or have you done it already? :-)

Living Room / Re: How can I automatically mirror specific folders in the cloud?
« Last post by tomos on June 29, 2020, 11:35 AM »
Yeah, I used use Syncovery to back up to Amazon S3. Havent used it for mirror/sync though -- it does offer to interact with many cloud sites. Probably most good backup software these days does that -- Syncback, Backup4all etc.

EDIT// they probably mostly want to zip before upload, so wraith's solution of mirroring to the local (e.g. Onedrive) folder is probably the best solution.

They offer some more basic (but nice) sets for free if you sign up for their newsletter.
https://artifexforge...y/free-design-tools/

It's not immediately clear which are for Affinity (as opposed to Illustrator / Photoshop) but I got the Outline & Wax Crayon brushes.
307
Along with Designer (now @ full price of 55€) you get "Fine Liner Brushes by The Artifex Forge --
over 50 vector Fine Liner brushes, plus 10 Fine Liner textures."

Where can I find more information about this? Is it for new purchases only? Or is this free for anyone who owns Designer (even if purchased years ago)?
I suspect for new/more recent purchases. [ EDIT// it's not free seperately. ]
If you're registered with Affinity, they allow you to redownload purchases -- it should show there if you have it or not.

(The brushes cost $19 direct from their site.)

Havent tried them out yet, but they look interesting:

Can you take a screenshot showing the small fonts?

See this post for screenshot of options

Note the text [in Options] is very small:
FHD screen (1920 x 1080)
Text etc. is @ 125% (default)

Here SC options on the left -- not a big difference but SC is near my limit (but good), the other is a strain

EDIT// for some reason that screenshot shows (here in my browser) a lot bigger that the actual size of those dialogues here. But at least the comparision is helpful

and here the Virtual Hierarchy, again with SC options for comparision (compare also with menu text at top of image)

Love Chock ("Eat the World Happier" lol)
99% Extreme Dark [Ingredients: Raw cocoa / lucuma powder / vanilla / sea salt]

The taste is a shock initially -- direction of earthy, but not in a bad way. Intense, but not bitter.
Salt noticeable initially and towards the end. Very lovely consistency: creamy, buttery.

I'd give it a [9]

Like you mouser, I used only eat milk choclate. This, I could imagine having in the cupboard and occasionally eating a bit. Probably costs an arm and a leg. Netherlands based -- dont know if available in the US.

(I had a taste of a 70% bar afterwards -- it tasted viciously sweet.)

Currently using this to try and dig out some photos from a folder with a couple of thousand images (copied from phone).

Still loving the virtual hierarchy (which is why I'm using it in above scenario).

Doubleclick thumbnail (I'm in grid view) opens file in default app -- normally pressing Enter key on focused file would do the same, but it doesnt here. Could that be arranged :-) ?

Re font size: still finding the font size in Options too small (compare with e.g. SC options). Also font size of the virtual hierarchy is very small.
Relevant info/settings:
15.6" FHD screen / Font scaling @ 125% (default)

I like this visual, it is helpful.

It is!  Thanks for sharing - I can really see the workflow from this image.  My only problem is the same thing that I have with everything- I can collect, but going through the collection is a problem for me.  I need to do the first two steps at the same time.
Do you mean the Zettelkasten notes *and* the reference database?

13. The true meaning of 42

In The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy the supercomputer Deep Thought is built by a race of hyper-intelligent alien beings to determine the answer to "life, the universe, and everything". Deep Thought determines that the answer is somewhat anticlimactically "42". It sounds like a joke, but is there more to this answer? Douglas Adams was an unabashed computer nerd and knew a heck of a lot about programming language and coding. In programming, an asterisk is commonly used to translate as "whatever you want it to be". In ASCII language, the most basic computer software, "42" is the designation for an asterisk. A computer, Deep Thought, was asked what the true meaning of life was. It answered as a computer would: "42" = "anything you want it to be". Genius.
Thought this was interesting
I like it a lot
I found the text and cleaned it up, want to save that :-)

Thanks for the feedback

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Tabs Outliner for Chrome
« Last post by tomos on June 12, 2020, 04:35 AM »
I went back to Firefox in 2015, but now using Vivaldi on one machine. Installed the 'Tabs Outliner' extension again and very happy about that.
I tend to lose track of tabs and consider session saving as a form of bookmarking :-[ **

A couple of comments:

There's a paid version of Tabs Outliner where keyboard shortcuts are enabled, but you need a Chrome account in order to purchase. I would like to support and enable shortcuts, but not going to open a chrome account just for that (havent researched it yet / dont particularly like the idea).

I'm still a little unsure if I have multiple windows open -- and close one, will it be lost. Must test that.

** Tabs Outliner is a game changer for me -- gives a good overview and allows me to save and organise and close unnecessary tabs easily.

General Software Discussion / Re: Vivaldi, the new Web browser for power users
« Last post by tomos on June 12, 2020, 04:17 AM »
Anyone using Vivaldi's note-taking capabilities?
They have a new 'notes manager' in-browser in current version (3.1)

See here https://vivaldi.com/...-configurable-menus/ (scroll down a wee bit)
and here https://help.vivaldi.com/article/notes/ here https://help.vivaldi...ticle/notes-manager/

Highlights of the Notes Manager:

  • Text formatting: Text can be hyperlinked and formatted with common styles such as bold, italics, and headings via a toolbar at the top or keyboard shortcuts. Even more, it can be achieved with Markdown formatting.
  • WYSIWYG Editor: The “What you see is what you get” editor allows immediate changes to document in its styled form.
  • Find text: The Ctrl F shortcut looks for certain text inside a particular note.
  • Undo-Redo: CTRL+Z reverses the last action; CTRL+Y is used to undo the reverse.
  • Word count: A character and word count is displayed at the end of the note.
  • Attach images: Images can be added from the right end of the toolbar.
  • Full-screen editing: Notes can be edited without any distraction in a full-screen view, or along with a detailed notes tree view that can be sorted by note title, content, creation date, associated address or number of attachments.
  • New notes: They can be added from a webpage selection via the context menu, through Quick Commands, deleted, and organized into folders.
  • Note search: Ability to search through notes with a full-text search box right at the top.
  • Sync Notes across devices
  • Vivaldi’s secure syncing of notes content across desktop and Android devices is protected with end-to-end encryption. Notes can be used to store some snippets of code as well. User data is stored on Vivaldi’s own secure servers hosted in Iceland.

This means you can compose and view notes safely across devices. For example, you can start writing a note on your Android device, and finish writing it later, or simply view it, on your computer.

Notes Manager, the only built-in note-taking tool in a browser

Our philosophy is having tools built in the browser and the Notes manager is part of it. This means you can rely less on extensions and third-party apps which can hamper performance and pose a threat to privacy and security.

To export notes:

Open Quick Commands (F2 / ? E);
Type “Export notes“;
Select a folder you want to export the notes to and click Select Folder.
All notes will be saved as separate text files.
=> Exporting as text file would possibly lose all formatting (or may be saved as markdown?). Would presumably lose images though.

Wasn't there a whole thread about that a while back? (maybe a year -- although, given how time flies, it could've been a lot longer).

General Software Discussion / Re: Thoughts on Windows 10 pagefile size?
« Last post by tomos on June 07, 2020, 06:45 AM »
I dont think changing the pagefile (again) would optimise further.

AFAICS the great pagefile debate is whether it's necessary to have one at all (presuming you have enough memory). You do need it for a windows dump file (not sure I have the name correct there...) when there is a problem with your pc. Setting your pagefile, you can set a maximum and minimum size. Some say you should make these the same, so the file is always there and there's less of Windows messing around on your hdd.

I now have 16GB RAM on two machines. Was considering removing the pagefile, but found both arguments for and against very convincing, so I just set it to fixed size in the end (cant remember offhand what size exactly).

So I am still struggling with one-note one-thought.  Specifically, what i think is one note ends up being a whole  bunch of thoughts.
I'd recommend reading this set of links from Panzer. I've not read all of them yet,  but will. I've never read anyone whose thinking (so far) aligns so well with my own. I'm hopeful I'll find a useful addition to my own practice and, if not, it will be a nice ego boost.
Like me, he seems to be respectful of the way he believes Luhmann worked but sceptical of the the methods of his modern acolytes.
To paraphrase something I think you intimated earlier, the thinking is the actual goal, not the physical note.
Thanks, and thanks to Panzer

I'll also point out that these are actual examples of notes.
this I find really helpful. I'm not great at picturing a setup when it's just described, so an actual example is wonderful to have -- and the website works really well (e.g. for anyone wanting a quick look see Write about what you read with two notes/links fully expanded in same page. Note related links bottom of note. All links also show a (longish) preview on mouseover. Still wish I had a couple of monitors though..)

ED: I've now read his note on why books don't work. I sort of agree with much of it, but his understanding of the underlying science is over simple and he's looking out of his car to where he's going rather than taking time to see all the ideas on both sides.
So no longer completely aligned.
 :)
haven't gotten this far yet

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Make Clips Always Stay in Tray Menu ?
« Last post by tomos on May 23, 2020, 06:59 PM »
I use the favourites sub-menu: not exactly what you're looking for, but works well:
My shortcut for the quick-paste menu is Ctrl+Alt+V (I think the default is different -- check in the options)
"W" then opens the main window -- there's a tick-box column to mark clips as favourites (see below)
Back in the quick-paste menu: "Q" will open the favourites sub-menu

General Software Discussion / Re: SoftMaker Office 2021 announced (free beta)
« Last post by tomos on May 22, 2020, 04:02 PM »
The only thing that prevents me from instantly buying it is that SoftMaker has already started to introduce features which are only available in the subscription version "Office NX" and I hate subscriptions...
I skipped the 2018 update and was going to go for this one when it comes around -- this will make me reconsider...

I do have Softmaker licences, but can't see myself subscribing. Always feels as they are constantly trying gouge a bit more inco[me].
I do sympathise a bit with the office software producers in general: the software is very mature, there often seems to be little reason to upgrade i.e. I suspect it must be hard enough for a company like Softmaker to do well.
323
Thoughts on Syncovery -- Upgrade pricing and the different versions available:

I probably should have gotten this BDJ at the time:
I have an older license (over four years old). The upgrade system is clearly explained and seems fair enough: I paid ~60€ at the time, I get 25% of that off of the current price.

But the version I have has 'file system monitoring' -- in order to get that now, one has to buy the Premium version which is 99$/€
That's too much for my current (minimal) usage, even at 50% of that I'd have reservations.
OTOH I think I had to upgrade once in over ten years usage, and the support is excellent.
Will decide when the next bdj offer comes around :-)
324
I did an evaluation of the extent to which this system meets my needs as expressed in the thread above and it feels positive. Very long post, so I've hidden in a spolier.
I haven't read your long-post spoiler yet, but just wanted to say this has been a very entertaining thread. And if you ever publish something for the general public Dormouse, let us know, because what you've written here has always been a pleasure to read.
Thanks!
