Non-Windows Software / Re: LINUX: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" just released
« Last post by dantheman on December 16, 2013, 03:04 PM »
That's what i always try to do 40hz.
In fact, i went over to LM forums, not only post link and text of your solution but also [Solved] in the header (proper étiquette).

Suppose the CanoScan LiDE70 is a hopeless case though.
But that's okay, i'm not into big scanning projects lately.

@40hz!

I really wasn't expecting any kind of miracle to happen here, but you just made my day!
hplip was already there so i went onto the next step hplip-gui and there was one item missing.
Installed that, then went to preferences and the HP toolbox told me i was missing a driver i managed to download from 'recommended' option and it worked!!!
Woohoooh!!!  8)

You should apply for a job a LinuxMint!

Muchos gracias hermano!

I didn't really want to post this!
LinuxMint 16 Cinnamon installs the driver for the HP 1018 printer but it can never print anything.
Tried out Pinguy and there's no support for that printer either.
ElementaryOS (even if it keeps asking for user p.w. to install a driver at boot) works just fine.
Even if the later is nice and fast too, i still prefer LinuxMint Cinnamon.
Can't have your cake and icing.

40hz, i believe the 'here' link is missing.
On the same wintery slope of reviews... i don't recall Dedoimedo ever so enthused about a linux distro here.

@40zh

That's better!
Went to the nvidia319 (recommended) in settings, rebooted things look better.
Thanks!

BTW, glad i could have been of some use to you 40hz!
It's odd that Chromium has the option to hide system title bar and borders.
Guess Dedoimedo is right on his recent rant about Mozilla ?

Here it is :
Graphics:  Card: NVIDIA G96M [GeForce GT 130M] bus-ID: 01:00.0
X.Org: 1.14.3 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev, vesa) FAILED: nouveau Resolution: [email protected]
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on NV96 GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 9.2.1 Direct Rendering: Yes

(something is missing or failing).

That Toolbar Autohide is working just fine. Here it is at work:

I've got the LM panel sent to the top, could this have an impact?
Thunderbird behaves in same manner.
Not very nice when you a black theme and nice long greyish horizontal bar.

40hz,

If you can help out on this, i'd appreciate it!
1. i find graphics grainier than say, PCLinuxOS (changing monitor settings doesn't do anything to improve).
2. how to change font and even better, make title bars disappear (or autohide) in Firefox for example?
I've got "toolbar autohide" which works just fine in Windows but not on Linux Mint Cinnamon 16.

Now i understand your initial enthusiasm.
Glad to hear about you finding that free gem!
Lucky guy!   ;D

For some reason, standby or hibernate modes don't like my little ol' machine.

Thanks for the reminders 40hz - think i might just keep LM as default.
Although i've seen a few complaints on LM blog about problems with Cinnamon 16, it has never been better as far as i can recall!
Everything is basically 100% faster than before. Yes!!

Nice catch 40hz!
First i've seen of that webpage and such a long well done presentation too!

Other than the first glitches expected on installation, standby mode failed at first try.

Now if i can figure out how to make Cinnamon boot second to Windows... boot config is read only and i always have a hard time to remember how to get into root mode. Not easy after 50!

@ewemoa, not too obvious!   :-[
Do hope to find the LXLE has it set up on the top right hand corner, like a transparent gadget...
BTW, Cinnamon CPU has been spiking.

'Funny' thing yesterday, CPU on Windows 7 was going tilt all day long, then when i decided to give Cimmanon another spin, it stopped!
Can computers read your mind?

Windows cpu was going bananas today (searchhost thingy) so i decided to give Elementary another try (for some reason tweak tool is no longer available) so i decided to go a bit deeper into LinuxMint Cinnamon - surprise! No more CPU issues.
Any tips on monitoring CPU on LM?

If i could only get that sufferin' suckatash CanonLide70 to work with LM!  :(
That's okay. Dual boot isn't all that bad.  :)

Clem is doing an excellent job!
Couldn't even load previous version on live DVD.

Do think i'll stick to Windows 7 though (peripheral issues but also shareware hard to do without now).

In all practicality... i found ElementaryOS to be the best so far with regards to peripheral compatibility issues.
Just don't like their forum and the fact that the top panel can't be set to autohide (annoying on laptops).

Don-keys and mon-keys! ha!  :P

BTW, i think i'm giving up on Linux.
No matter which version I've tried, they all have some hick (especially with peripherals).
Windows 7 is just too hard to beat!

You're good 40hz!   :D
With a bit of Old Dutch, things will be really Spic and Span! :P
Can't wait to try it out!

BTW, although the author doesn't mention it, LXLE latest 'final' version is PAE on my laptop.

A friend of mine quite familiar with many distros was impressed by the graphical quality of LXLE. The present download is probably non-PAE so it should satisfy your needs Lutz_

40hz i love Cinnamon but it don't like me.
If there were a way to tweak video configurations then i would be game for sure!
Would throwing a few latin words at it help? :)
Do have 4Gs of RAM...

Final LXLE version was ready this a.m.
Many bugs were fixed but i still have to boot twice to get the software manager updated.
Didn't know the previous version was beta, but anyway, this one is doing good so far.

You're right Sword!
I'm probably not doing enough diggin'

LinuxMint is still one of my favs.
In fact, if i had to install a Linux system for a friend it would be Linux Mint Mate.
I just don't find it as fast as it could and should be on my relatively 'new' system (now going on 3 years - duo core only).
So, i've gone onto Manjaro for a stretch but I've not found anything to be as good looking or that much faster than LinuxMint.

Have tried LinuxMints latest Debian.
-Cinnamon is just as fast as a turtle.
-Mate is nice but not much faster than other present versions.

Then i came upon LXLE.
So far, it is the most lightweight and esthetically pleasing.
Of course this isn't all that counts but i'm presently inclined to like it.
Hope 40hz doesn't get upset!

After reading up on Microsoft Office 2013 and their $100 annual fee.
I don't want to find myself in a dead end when the later decide to change the Word extension to .docxyz or whatever.
A new scanner Linux compatible + LibreOffice may well end up being the best alternatives.

Speaking of which... I just dropped by LXLE.net and they're asking people to stop downloading the beta version until final one comes out this Saturday or Sunday.

For an unknown distro who claims to have 10k beta testers in a month,
i'd say that it sounds "bloody well right!' ;)
