Mouser's Zone / Re: IDEA - Webpage archiving
« Last post by kfitting on November 06, 2005, 04:14 PM »
I just realized, going to the Neomem homepage probably won't get you a whole lot... besides it's www.neomem.com.  Go to the blog and the forums for info on the new version coming out.  Hopefully this program will do what the author is intending!

Sorry, this is going to sound like I'm beating a dead horse to death, but this is where a Note program should go.  It would be awesome to have one program that contains data, webpages, text, rtf, you name it and put a GUI on it, make it searchable, relatable, etc.  The GUI would allow you to dispaly the info any way you want it: tree, text, flowchart, mindmap, etc.  Obviously a big task but I dream of the day when all my information can be placed in multiple views without having to repeat it!  One cool program that is stepping up to the plate is the successor to Neomem (www.neomem.org)... the author has some interesting ideas about collecting data and making it easy to enter in new data.  Something to keep tabs on!

Kevin

PS - I know there are programs that do some of this stuff... but the ones I have looked at are complex, non user-friendly (how many clicks does it take!!!  Seriously, I think software corporations have a deal with doctors and are trying to promote carpal tunnel), or only support one style of arranging data.... I continue to dream!

Sorry leewal, I dont use Screenshot captor that often (I have it on my machine, but I dont take screenshots much!), but it looks like Stefan (an avid SC user) has answered the question.

One comment Stefan, if you delete the ini you lose all old settings, right?  This may be desireable, but for an upgrade it may be nice to keep all the settings as they were.  This is what I do with FindRun.

All software coded by mouser does not require an uninstall.  Just install over the old version.  You can also open the file you downloaded with a zip program (like WinZip) and copy the files within to the directory you have your current version in.  No "install" is ever necessary!

Heh heh, how did I know an alias would work!?  I think we should relabel alias' as "mouser's panacea."  However, it is amazing just how powerful they can be... just gotta get your head wrapped around them!

Now this would be interesting... I can see the potential, especially, as you pointed out, since the pause/break is right there.  Worth a try anyway!

This may be slightly different than what you are trying to do, but if you are trying to build a completely new install, nlite and AutoPatcher are two programs that are invaluble.  nlite lets you customize your installation disc: get rid of unnecssary drivers, add tweaks, add security patches, slipstream, etc.  Autopatcher gives all the current security patches, addons, and tweaks for easy setup after install.

Any way to combine the username/password from DonationCoder and the username/password required to access mantis?  There are too many passwords, pin numbers, and irrevelant trivia to keep track of... one more and I explode!  Looks like a good addition to the site though,

I may be missing the whole point of the font, but could I request larger sizes than 8?  I realize it is supposed to take up as little space as possible and all that, but being 23 and resigned to the fact that I will be sitting in front of computers for most of my career, I would like to ease the eye strain.  I really like the way you made the font, it is much easier reading, just a tad small!  Monitor resolution is 1280x1024.

Once again, I realize this may not fit your goals (in which case forget about it!), but the font is really nice and I would love to use it!

Yeah, been going to airshows since I was in about third grade.  I get to hear that other sweet music, afterburners, a lot now!  But a nice merlin or radial (those big pratts!) still have a beautiful sound to them.  I've seen P51's fairly often.  Still waiting to see an F8F in person though...

Another cool link Darwin is www.fencecheck.com, an aviation photography website.  You have to search through the forums but there are some extremely impressive photos there.  Fencecheck is more of an artist's photo site whereas ANet has such stiff criteria you end up with a lot of similar shots.

Good tip on the IX, hadnt paid that much attention to Spitfire characteristics!  On the other hand, finally got to see a Spitfire fly this year.... ahhhh, the music of that merlin!

Darwin: Pre Mk IX?? You can tell from the rear fuselage?  That's pretty impressive.  Unfortunately, it's not a bubble canopy... those are downright sweet looking.  If you go to www.airliners.net and do a search on Spitfire, they've got some impressive pics of a later (MkXIV or MkXV) with a bubble canopy and five bladed prop.  Poetry in motion!

No, no pictures... though stefans has kindly provided one.  You can search on Google for fw190 and get quite a few small pics.  Awesome plane though... especially the Dora model.  One of the FW190's enemies, the P-51D, is hanging at the top of the pic.  Guessing on the D part based on the paint scheme.  And now, before I ramble on about aircraft,

I only jump into this conversation because "fw190a," while perhaps having other connotations, is the name of a fantastically successful German fighter from WWII.  The German Focke Wulf 190 was a fearsome threat to the Allied bombing of Germany and caused many headaches to the pilots and crewman of our B-24's, B-17's, and escort fighters.  Sorry, I'm a military aviation geek....

Well, in the forums each post (down at the bottom) has it's parent forum in brackets like [Find and Run] or [Living Room].  The subject of each RSS "email" could have the same thing.  That way you could see at a glance where each post is from.

Living Room / RSS question...
« Last post by kfitting on October 26, 2005, 12:47 PM »
I am just trying out RSS for the first time and decided to try the forums here as one of my first tests.  One question: is there any way to put the forum the message is from in the message subject?  It's neat to get all the posts and just be able to sift through them, but it's hard to tell what the message is referencing.  I dont know how much you can customize RSS (I have no idea how it works just yet!), but this would make the forum RSS feed more usable.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS - Program Goals
« Last post by kfitting on October 24, 2005, 01:26 PM »
Well, in the area of interface design, I've been thinking about the whole Tree hierarchy.  Right now, most organizers revolve around the tree.  Could that be switched so that the program revolves around the data?  With a database I think it can.  In other words, you could have multiple tree structures for the same database file.  One area I use notes programs for is keeping a list of quotes.  Some quotes fit into more than one catogory.  Now, with the filtered nodes you could use the current tree structure: any piece of data that fit a certain node would be displayed.  The problem is that sometimes, we want the structure to organize the data not the other way around.  This comes into play more with a database meant to organize all different types of data.  With multiple tree structures you could manually organize data one way, then organize it another way to see different aspects.  Personally I think this becomes really powerful when you think about it in regards to totally different visual forms (diagrams, trees, tables, etc).  Each format displays data differently, but the pool of data is the same for each format.  A start would be to allow different trees for the same data.

Now that I've utterly confused things.... I go.

this is generally true kfitting, but in this case i think its most important to get these features in asap even if it means a little more work later to move the clipboard stuff to a more independent module.

Not a problem, just making sure!

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: CHS - Program Goals
« Last post by kfitting on October 24, 2005, 10:46 AM »
Agreed mouser.  The only reason I was going long term first was because I figured it would be easier to get the backbone in place, then work on the clipboard stuff (or at least work on the clipboard stuff in conjunction with the new backbone).  Basically, I'm assuming that the current program is not written for the generic concept so it might be a good idea to get the generic concept working with one plugin (clipboard) then expanding.... but, that's mainly philosophical!

I think you've covered most of the short range stuff mouser.  Those goals would make CHS a viable clipboard program.  Do you think it would be beneficial to start talking interface?  Are you going to have each plugin define it's interface?  I can see things working well for a clipboard organizer that could be implemented differently in a notes plugin.  As far as interfaces and inter-plugin operability are concerned, would the clipboard plugin be able to be used with the notes plugin?

Carol: spellcheck??  Come on, that's cheating! (especially when it's right in front of you)

Clipboard Help+Spell / CHS - Program Goals
« Last post by kfitting on October 24, 2005, 09:05 AM »
In another thread, mouser mentioned that discussion needed to happen regarding CHS' interface.  As I was thinking about this, I realized that the interface would be highly contingent on "what" CHS is supposed to do.  Therefore, before discussion on interface can begin, the overall function of CHS should be defined.

As far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong, mouser) CHS is going to be branching out into more of a shell program containing different plugins.  Each plugin will use a database to perform a specific job.  Currently, CHS supports a clipboard plugin, where every bit of text from the clipboard is kept in a database.  Another idea for a plugin would be a "notes manager" or "miscillaneous information organizer" (ahhhh spelling!).  The reason for the plugin system is so users could determine how in-dpeth they wanted to get: if they just need a clipboard tool, they can have it.  If they want a notes manager they can have it.  If they think of something entirely new, they can have it (maybe).

In thinking about this concept, there are things that any program supporting these two functions should have:

1. Filtered database  - for fast searching/organization (sort of like what is currently implemented for CHS).  I imagine a database backend where all data is stored.  Treeviews, table views, and text views would be a way to organize that data.  Further I think it would be cool (though difficult) to allow limited mind mapping type support.  Basically, CHS stores data in a file and allows users to organize it the way they want!
2. Format support - plain text for those who want it, RTF for those who what formatting, and HTML and XML would be nice.  This would also allow people to store information in table form, hyperlinks, etc.  (Keynote was going to use TRichView (www.trichview.com) as it's richedit component... just to give an idea of what is implied here).
3. Import/Export - This is a huge deal to me... data is no good if the program you are using cannot get it out to be used by other programs!  Once again, plain text, RTF, HTML, XML, XLS, LOL, BRB, ETC would be nice.
4. Scripting support - allows people to automate routine tasks!

These are things I think are important.  I have no idea how easy they are to implement and there are probably some things I have overlooked.  This topic is for the discussion of general ideas for CHS.  Suggestions should be applicable to multiple plugin ideas (particularly to the Clipboard and notes ones mentioned above), or can be other plugin ideas.  Basically, what should CHS do and what big pieces are required to get the job done.  Once this has been discussed, interface design can be discussed.

Finally, since mouser is the one doing the coding, any feature suggested by anyone else is not guaranteed!  I will try to keep this post updated with new requests so you dont have to scroll down to see new ones all the time (this also is not gauranteed!!).  So let's discuss!

I thought it was open source?  At least, you could get the source code from the website.  The problem is that the shortcomings need to be addressed by a complete rewrite to get away from MS RTF dll so I dont know how much the source code for V1.6.5 would help.  You may be able to correct little bugs or add minor features but you may as well just start over like Marek was with KN2.  I've been thinking about mouser's call for discussion regarding CHS interface for something like this and will post over in the appropriate forum within the next day with a discussion starter.I have no answers.... just discussion!  I love interface discussion!

marek, the author of Keynote, an information organizer, has announced he is done coding projects (http://www.tranglos..../viewtopic.php?t=419).  This is something I had kind of anticipated, though it still stinks because Keynote was such a great program (at least I never tired of advertising for it!).  I still haven't found a decent replacement for Keynote though I've tried many of them.  One idea that looks promising is neomem (www.neomem.org - go to the blog it's got the most recent news).

Just to be a pain in the butt: mouser, I am now behind CHS turning into a notes manager ;) , heh heh.  But, you should take a look at neomem's site.  Perhaps a collaboration would work... and now, I turn and run!  Just wanted to make a post to let people know that Keynote has ended.

Good points... one thing that should be stated right up front is who the boss is (assuming you, mouser!) and that you have ultimate authority on who has space and who doesnt have space and who gets their space canceled.  In our democraticaly influenced society people tend to forget that their are some things that are more totalitarian in nature.  As YOUR service with YOUR bandwidth, it's YOUR rules.  Obviously influenced by what others say, but in the end someone needs to be in control for this idea to work.
