But, SJ, if you use a VNC compatible instead of Remote Desktop they can see everything.  I use CrossLoop and ShowMyPc which are both a VNC flavor.

its funny that I never noticed the "share with" when I right clicked the folder until today.  But when I went back and re-read 40hz's original instructions, it made perfect sense.   :-[

Like i keep telling my teachers, "You have to read (really read) what is on the screen in front of you.  It is telling you what you need to know (most of the time).  And don't think you know (assume) what it is saying!"   :D  :P

I am guilty... again of not following my own instructions.  READ the instructions (40hz) David, READ the instructions!

After a day of different users logging in to the computer, the Event Log Explorer is showing correctly.  The scriping method that 40hz came up with only shows the users that have administrative rights on the computer.   :(

By using 40hz's method, I can view what I want and not have to wade through all the other stuff that Event Log Explorer is showing.

Well, I have spent some time playing around with the suggestions.  In a nutshell,  the Event Log Viewer has been the easiest to set up and use.

4wd's suggestion of using a customize filtering option worked but didn't show the recent logoff events but event log viewer did. as matter of fact, it didn't show a logoff event after 9-11-2011.  couldn't figure that one out.

as for 40's scripting method, it also works.  but i will have to wait until I get more users on before knowing which method is going to work the best for me.

My Parental Controls don't seem to be working even though it is setup and eventviewer will actually show it initiated a log off.  Hmmm.  He is still logged in well after the logoff time.

I did find a service called parental control but it said its used in Vista for backwards compatiblity (whatever that means).  it by default, is turned off.   I am using Win 7 Pro.

Living Room / where to find user login logs?
« Last post by techidave on November 19, 2011, 04:41 AM »
I am running Win7 Pro SP1(at home) and I am trying to find out when different users login and logoff.

I have Parental Controls setup for one of my kids but it seems he is always on past his logoff time.

I have looked in Event Viewer but it gives the SID for the user and not the name.   :(

In googling this, I have come across using "quser" and "netuser" and then adding the username after them.  for example, quser dave or netuser dave.

quser only seems to give info on the current logged in user.  netuser will give last time he logged in but not when he logged out.  Better yet would be to find all the login and logoff times for a certain user.

is there a way to do this?  Perhaps a coding snack could be made?

Thanks
Dave

Living Room / multiple monitors vs large monitor?
« Last post by techidave on November 16, 2011, 01:42 PM »
I have two 19" monitors on my desk.  But would one wide screen monitor be just as good?  Then i could have two windows open, they wouldn't be full screen though.

Surely someone here has worked with a setup like this and can give me some advise before i spend my money.

thanks in advance,
Dave

Living Room / connecting apple tv to projector
« Last post by techidave on October 21, 2011, 07:38 AM »
My school is considering using the Apple Tv device to wirelessly connect our iPads to a projector.  The problem is our projectors are older and do not have the HDMI or the DVI port on them.  Our tv's are also behind the time and do not have a hdmi port on them either.

how much video loss would i lose if i used a HDMI to VGA adapter on the projector?  or is there other things I should consider before deploying the apple tvs with vga adapters.

40hz, I don't know that they are blocking it but it could be possible.  I wondered about this.

Good ideas, App!  He is using Vista Home Premuim, so he probably has at least IE7.  But it may be time to upgrade to the latest browser.

I didn't know if it needed anything else other than Silverlight.  Requirements for it are not very easy to find. which is why I asked here.  I figured someone had this experience before.   :)

General Software Discussion / What makes Neflix streaming tick?
« Last post by techidave on October 11, 2011, 07:37 PM »
I had a friend ask me today about using Netflix, or rather not being able to use it.  A couple of months ago, he lost the ability to strream videos.   He says nothing happens after he chooses his title by clicking on it.  He has contacted support but after they couldn't figure it out, they told him it was his computer.

I don't use Netflix and the only thing that I can find out is it uses MS Silverlight.  "In its simplest form, video is streamed to the user using standard PC hardware, and requires Microsoft's Silverlight software to be installed."  You can read the whole article from Wikipedia here

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Living Room / Re: Access Point Recommendations
« Last post by techidave on October 09, 2011, 06:56 AM »
I went to Wal Mart just the other day to get a wireless device to use on our school network ($80)  I finally settled on the Netgear N600 which is wireless N too.  Keep in mind that wallyworld only keeps the consumer devices, I should have known better to get one there.... but I couldn't wait to order one.

Everything was fine up to a point with the setup.  It only wanted to stay on the class c subnet (192.x.x.x) while we are on a class a subnet (10.x.x.x).  This was doing a manual setup using the web browser to program it.  I never could get it to go, no matter what I tried.

So I popped in the good ol' CD that came with it.  Not going to work this way either >:(  It finally shut down after it told me I was on a domain and therefore it couldn't help me.   GRRRRRR!

so now I will have to order a business grade model and wait a few days before it gets here.   :(

sorry, I don't have any  "good" recomendations for you 40hz.  Just keep away from the local discount stores for your purchase.

Living Room / Re: POE: Power over Ethernet confusion

Thanks, 4wd.  I was thinking I would need something on the device end but didn't know what.  When I googled it, I came up empty.  But didn't know what I would need is called a POE extractor.   :-[

Living Room / POE: Power over Ethernet confusion
« Last post by techidave on October 01, 2011, 07:56 PM »
I am confused about using POE devices.  Does the device like an access point, need to be specially made for POE?  I understand how a POE switch or POE injector pushes power over the ethernet cable.

What I don't understand is how the device on the other end takes the power from the ethernet cable to actually power the device.

I am sure someone here can clarify this for me.

We are running around 75 to 100 mailboxes on an old P3 933 with 1.5 gig of RAM.  It has a RAID 5 setup and is at 40 gig partition.  Actually 2 partions. C=8.5 gig and D= 34 gig.

Yes, it is Exchange 2003.  And yes we could just update the hardware, but I would also be inclinded to want to update Exchange as well if I was going to stay with that.  I have been told that some of the other mail systems will run on XP and they are not the memory hog that Exchange is.

General Software Discussion / can you recommend a free email system
« Last post by techidave on July 08, 2011, 06:39 AM »
I am looking at replacing my aging 10  year old Exchange server with a free system like Pegus/ Mercury Mail.  Since our school enrollment is continuing to decline, our existence is only a few more years.  But instead of waiting til this Dell Poweredge 2500 dies, I would like to replace it before then.

I would like to continue to host our own server instead of going with the cloud on it.  We currently use Outlook but do not share calendars or anything fancy like that.

I was just wondering what others might be using or might have tried that they would recommend???

Thanks,
Dave

Maybe the truck is in need of a tune up!   :)   You don't say if the pickup is four wheel drive or not but that will affect your mileage.

My 2001 Chevy S-10 4.3L V-6 Extended cab gets around 17 city to 22 highway.  I sure thought I would get better than that when I bought it.

Vehicles are rated for mileage under the best of conditions, of which, we will never see out in the field.

This could go on and on but to avoid an ... I am done commenting on it.
