i can give you a clue about this:
such things usually occur when you have some kind of explorer EXTENSION that is causing the trouble, rather than the file explorer itself.

in other words, look for any utilities you may have added that provide extra functionality like context menus, explorer columns, etc.  could even be antivirus program, etc.

The Form Letter Machine / Re: Feature requests for The Form Letter Machine
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2006, 06:38 PM »
It would really be nice if the people who like The Form Letter Machine would consider rating it and/or leaving a mini review at some of the software download sites that support this, since no one seems to be doing so and i don't think most people know about the program.

Article: Dual-Core CPU Buyer's Guide

With Intel and AMD embroiled in a performance and price war, choosing a desktop processor can be tough. We'll make the decision easier with a guide to chip choices and specs, along with pointers to some bargains among both dual- and single-cores.

couple of things before f0dder responds:
1) hopefully this will light a spark under f0dder to implement search this month.
2) you might want to try our own Find+Run Robot (FAR) as a replacement to slickrun (https://www.donation...r/findrun/index.html)
3) you might seriously want to try a dedicated password manager key KeePass which was mentioned today on our forum (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5107.0)

as i remember from our email program shootout review (https://www.donation...ailClient/index.html),
one of the things people love Mulberry for is their serious IMAP support (http://www.imap.org/whatisIMAP.html), which is missing in most mail clients.

Site/Forum Features / A dilemna regarding affiliate fees
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2006, 02:14 PM »
We have an interesting dilemna and i'm curious to hear what you guys think about it.

It is our policy never to accept any affiliate or commission fees for software discounts offered through DonationCoder.com

Such fees are quite common on websites that recommend software, but it is our belief that they introduce a conflict of interest, in that the website has a vested interested in sales of the programs, and so we avoid this if even just to avoid the appearance of impropriety.

What we always do is ask the company if they are willing to pass on what would be the (sometimes substantial) affilliate fee to the purchaser.  This can mean the difference between the user getting a 5% discount and getting a 25% discount.

However, sometimes we get back a reply saying that the company is not willing to do this, for a variety of reasons (they arent technically able to set up such a thing, or they dont want to disadvantage other affiliates).

So, generally in this case we just turn away the discount completely and do not accept the program into our discount list.

Now, there is no way we are going to get into the business of making money on affiliate fees - it's just not the direction I want this site to go in.  I think we can be proud to be able to survive simply on user donations.

However, I thought it might be interesting to think about other possibilities.

One thing we could do is agree to the affiliate system and then have a way of everyone who bought the program using the affiliate link getting credited back the affiliate fee through the DonationCredits system.  The only downside here is all the additional work we'd have to do to organize and process this, which probably makes it a bit inconvenient.

Another thing we could do is donate all affiliate fees to a charity of some sort.  Not sure the amounts are going to be worth the effort though..

Ideas?

Best Text Editor / Re: Please correct EmEditor review
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2006, 01:53 PM »
Welcome to the site Yutaka, we very much welcome software authors on this site, and I think I speak for most of us when I say that everyone has different needs and different tastes, and just because a reviewer liked one program best doesn't mean everyone else will agree.  The best thing for anyone is to try the different programs and decide for themselves.

I am happy to make the corrections+additions you have suggested; they will be up tonight.

ps. The text editor review in question probably needs an update very soon

It is probably worth saying too that Copy Path is really useful as you can copy filenames, full path names, and containing folder names to the clipboard via the right click menu in Explorer (and in Directory Opus) in both long name and short name formats - at times these can be very useful.

agree completely.

We should have our week one thread coming up today or tomorrow at the latest, on the GTD system by David Allen.

just a head's up so you don't feel like we've forgotten you.  meanwhile you can be productive by trying to take care of any lingering issues that you know how to handle that might distract you from your new life of an organized person.

Wonderful mini robot wrestling video.  You can see here a real flavor of the artistic personality emerging in these robot art forms as the technology improves..  I think it won't be too many more years before we really fully transition from this stuff being dominated by engineering issues to being the playground for performance artists and we are going to be in for a wild ride..

General Software Discussion / Ninotech Free Context Menu Tools
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2006, 11:26 AM »
Carol Haynes recently reminded me of Ninotech Copy Path, a very nice shell extension to copy paths's from explorer to the clipboard in various formats, and i know KenR was looking for a file date/time modifier, which Ninotech also makes (Ninotech Date Edit), so this seemed like a good time to post about the very profession tools at Ninotech.

pathcopy.gif

dateedit.gif

They also make a shareware program called Ninotech Info Book Pro (http://home.worldonl...inotech/infobook.htm):
Ninotech Info Book Pro is a personal information manager (PIM) for Windows 95, 98, Me, NT4, 2000, and XP that enables you to manage information about your colleagues, contacts, friends, and family in a snap. Ninotech Info Book Pro is a shareware program and we urge you to try it for free for 30 days.

copypath is a very nice extension, but it sounds like he is an explorer/drag+drop centric person like myself and what he wants is to be able to drag directories from an explorer window to the open/save dialog to jump to that folder in the dialog.  it's actually a good idea for a feature to add to these dialog extender tools.

If you don't see such a button, it's possible that we don't have attachments enabled for non-donating members of the website, but we really should and i can change that.

A little trick that makes sure you'll get a new drive is to hook it to a PSU you don't care much about, then short-circuit the drive with a screwdriver until it stops working completely.

back in the old days we had a vcr that was broken and would flip out at random and display nonsense on the screen.  it was under one of those extended warranties from the retail store we bought it on.  the only problem is that it was so intermitant that the problem would never show up when we brought it in for them to repair it.  after the 3rd trip in where they kept it for a week and returned it saying there is no problem, we reluctantly had to apply the short-out method to help that little vcr meet it's vcr friends in vcr heaven, and finally got a replacement.  i'm not proud of that moment but sometimes i wonder if it's the only solution for such cases..

regarding the RMA, are they likely to replace the drive - or will i have to spend a lot of time trying to convince them - i'd rather just sling the faulty drive and forget about it if i'm going to have to keep chasing things up.

you'll probably know within 5 minutes on the phone with them.  either they'll just tell you to send it in for a replacement and they won't even look at it, or they'll give you a hard time and never let up.
