Developer's Corner / Pligg.com - An Open Source CMS for Creating Digg-like Sites
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 10:46 AM »
As I understand it, Pligg is an open source CMS designed to provide your site with Digg-like features.

Looks quite interesting and while still in beta, sure seems to be getting some notice.

Pligg's Web 2.0 user interface gives your visitors a reason to come back to your site by making them decide on the site's content and giving them the chance to social network. By giving users the ability to collaboratively submit and dismiss articles, you are offering an experience that users are happy to take part in on a daily basis.

It's donationware - consider making a donation to support the project if you like what they are doing!

Simeon changed computers and his translation is not completely up to date; a new translation would be nice.
I can give you the previous translation as well if it might speed things up.
And definitely read the translator readme to make sure you dont waste time translating stuff that is not needed.

you can contact me at: [email protected]

thanks!

Living Room / Prediction: Google will Become Stumbleupon
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 02:26 AM »
I have some advice to the stumbleupon people: be scared (or make yourself a nice looking buyout target).

Niall Kennedy recently blogged about a google gadget that uses your search history to recommend other searches it thinks you might like. (http://www.niallkenn...ogle-personal-2.html).

I think we are seeing the first ripples of the plan google has for tracking your entire search history.

For those who don't know, StumbleUpon is a very cool service/toolbar which lets users rate sites they like or dislike, and then randomly send you to sites it thinks you will like based on similar tastes among users.  It's  very cool thing (www.stumbleupon.com).  It is in some ways similar to digg and others in that it tries to bring you sites it thinks you will like based on other people's opinions, thought the mechanisms are quite different.

It seems to me that google is going to make a real play for this market, by doing massive clustering of user searches in an attempt to provide stumbleupon like suggestions.  It's a natural move that will let them get advertising money not just when users initiate a search on their own but by actively SUGGESTING pages they should visit, and making ad money from those page visits.

I'm not saying whether this is a good or bad thing, it will depend a lot on what the google implementation looks like.  I just think if you put the puzzle pieces together:
  • Tracking Search History
  • Pushing Google Toolbar
  • Google Desktop Sidebar

And you combine that with the datamining algorithmic "fun" factor involved in doing clustering of user page ratings, it's just not conceivable to me that google isn't going to want to own this market..  Just remember where you heard it first.

We will be posting a summary at the end of the 3 month experiment, and we hope to be able to put up various hybrid systems invented by different people here who have participated. So while you are learning and inventing stuff, take some notes so you can write up the description of your perfect system.

jgp's gridmove is on the software page, and once he gets a proper webpage up with the rest of his tools it will be easier to link to them properly.

i guess my view would be the opposite to renegade's.  the idea of rolling my own when sooo much work has been done on this seems a bit crazy.

i also tend to like local apps, and there are some good ones for the pc (Mach 5 Analyzer is pretty nice and fast).

though its true that if you start getting 1gb log files, these programs start to choke and you need to find alternative strategies.

great post allen.

My motivation behind creating Clipboard Help And Spell was to create a free clipboard program that possessed the core strengths of Clipmate but was free and did some important things better (search, spelling, formatting).

Living Room / Re: Answerbag - a site of questions and answers

One of the members on DonationCoder, alex3f has actually been a pioneer in the field of these interactive question+answer sites, dating back into the late 90's.

You can see his web site here (still needs a bit of aesthetic work) and read about his work:  http://www.3form.org

[Alex is a friend from university and does research on Human Based Genetic Algorithms.  We sometimes argue about the use of the term Genetic Algorithm to describe some of these architectures, but he has published some great stuff on using interactive communities as mechanisms for searching for solutions].
