This lamp isn't the kind of thing you would give your college student:

Father: What happened to your desk lamp?
Son: My roommate(that's the way my dictionary spells it) ate it.
Father: I hope it gave him indigestion!

How could you study with what those raucous dorm dwellers threatened to do to your vulnerable light source?
Oh! the existential angst of a starving student forced to eat his desk lamp!  Better a nice, safe, inedible lamp.

General Software Discussion / Re: Putting a Classic Menu on Windows 7 - Redux

I just got a Win 7 machine and didn't like the Start menu, so I installed ClasicShell 3.6.2 and changed my Start menu to this:

Love it too!

Living Room / Anyine here use ClassicShell in Windows 7?
« Last post by Arizona Hot on December 01, 2012, 10:23 AM »
I just got a Win7 computer and prefer the XP hierarchical start menu to the one below(too flat), so I got ClassicShell. Does anyone here have any experience using it or have any problems with it?

What gif?

It seems that Microsoft is doing a flanking attack on Apple(goal: Apple pie?) and the "creative" and "out of the box" people are complaining. They expect Microsoft to say "Let them eat cake (Linux)!" next. "Lack of discoverability" seems to be a "lack of documentation" problem. See Tomos' Win8 tips thread. The screenshot below is from Wordnik about discoverability. I hope people don't think this comment belongs in the 'Silly Humor' thread.

General Software Discussion / Re: Tips for Windows 8 (got any?)

Windows 8 is too young. It's probably still full of bugs.
It’s a little mad buying immediately a new OS. It’s wise instead waiting for some years before buying it, so in the meantime many bugs will be fixed.

+1(I presume). This is why I expect to get a Win 7 machine. Timing is everything.

Missing Noun Alert! Your five year old dropped dead on his/her birthday and you salvaged the parts?!

Oh, did I forget to mention the bathtub of ice water? ;D

Those dratted nouns, people always ask questions when they go missing...  :P

You should be able to get away with it unless you are being stalked by the grammar police.

I haven't noticed any (many?) things not working here -- I tend to still get 32-bit programs even when using Windows 7 64-bit.

The horse says:

Can I run 32-bit programs on a 64-bit computer?

Most programs designed for the 32-bit version of Windows will work on the 64-bit version of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs.

Device drivers designed for the 32-bit version of Windows don't work on computers running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you're trying to install a printer or other device that only has 32-bit drivers available, it won't work correctly on a 64-bit version of Windows.

May be I misunderstood the question?

Thank you!

I have had ZERO problems with 64 bit windows since the Vista days. XP64 was another animal, but Vista 64 and Win7 64 have proven quite reliable.

Thank you!

IF I could get a leftover new Win 7 machine, would I have to junk my 32-bit programs or does Win 7-64 bit handle them OK?

I would like to know if you can run 32-bit programs now on Windows 7 64-bit? I don't want to have to throw away all my 32-bit programs. The last time I checked you couldn't do that.

Living Room / Re: Google Hack Gives Free Access to Premium Newspaper Articles

It works like this. You first copy the web address of any news article that is behind the registration firewall and paste that URL into the Google Search box. Now click the first Google result and you’ll be able to read the full text of the corresponding story without registering or subscribing.

Try it. This is the address of a WSJ article: Drillers Begin Recycling 'Frack Water' - WSJ.com

If you use the article's title in a Google search, clicking on the WSJ link works also.

That didn't work for me, but using Google's cache did:

It's a hack. I was wondering how many people would be interested in it.

Living Room / Google Hack Gives Free Access to Premium Newspaper Articles
« Last post by Arizona Hot on November 21, 2012, 11:49 PM »
Online newspaper websites like The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times are part of the First Click Free program but Google visitors can still get free access to all the news articles without registering or subscribing.

Online newspaper sites like the Financial Times require users to sign-in if they want to read more than one article on their site. The New York Times too had such a restriction in place earlier but they seem to have dropped that requirement now.

The Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, is a subscription-based site. They do offer free access to some of news stories but all the premium content is behind a pay-wall and therefore available only to paid subscribers.

Since these newspaper websites are part of the “First Click Free” program, someone visiting them via Google search can read the first page of the story without registering or subscribing. The first click is therefore “free” but the user will have to sign-in or register to read further.

First Click Free & Google Visitors

However, due to a possible bug in the implementation, the registration prompt gets bypassed for Google visitors giving them free access to all the news articles – even the premium content meant for subscribers.

It works like this. You first copy the web address of any news article that is behind the registration firewall and paste that URL into the Google Search box. Now click the first Google result and you’ll be able to read the full text of the corresponding story without registering or subscribing.

Now Austin wants to secede from Texas.

What does that even mean? The Unincorporated Town Formerly Known as Austin becomes its own state? Or does it automatically secede from the US as well? Speaking of that other thread with the conspiracies, all this secession stuff is ... a game. Units simply cannot secede, that was the cutting edge news of 1865. So here we go again, someone's playing an angle, and I simply won't waste my energy on it. It will go away in a couple of years. We didn't go through total hell for 160 years with lots of ugly wars only to have states/town threaten to secede in ... wait for it ... 2013 out of what is very close to boredom.

It's in Silly Humor. Don't take it seriously.
