Thanks for posting your reviews. I played all the ones you linked in here.

I found a bug that made this one really easy. You can buy tower upgrades even if you have no money!

One of the nice things about WordPress is that it automatically updates itself with critical security updates, so issues like this get taken care of automatically.

That said, I just manually updated to 4.2.1 when I went to write a post on my site. So it's nice to know I'm safe from this particular exploit either way. :-D

That's why I didn't get it.  The first thing I thought was "Cool!  A way for them to monetize their contributions!"  I guess I was in the minority with that thought process.

I don't get the problem with (read: uproar about) the idea that modders should be able to charge for their work. But what I don't like about it is that the modder only gets a 25% cut. That's hardly worth it unless you charge a lot of money for your mod.

But that's off topic for this thread, so I'll stop here.

And that 1-2 year max on a phone is pure hyperbole.

Agreed. I think that image was made more for humor/punditry than for accuracy. I'm currently using a phone (Galaxy Nexusw) that was (nearly) a year old (specs wise) when I bought it in the summer of 2012. So it's approaching 4 years old and it still works. It's sluggish as all get-out, and the battery life is even more abysmal than is standard fare these days, but it still works.

And yeah, more demands on the battery due to larger and higher quality screens means the battery doesn't last as long. Bigger screens means it's easier to break from a fall, and relying on touch input means a cracked screen possibly spells the death of the device's usefulness. Etc.

What content gets posted to PayPal? AFAIK the only "content" that PayPal facilitates moving from one person to another is money.

Someone selling something using PayPal isn't actually giving the goods to PayPal to disburse to the buyer. So I don't get what all this means. :-\

If you use Facebook Messenger on your phone/mobile device, there's a setting in there to allow the Messenger to show your location to the people you chat with. It is enabled by default and uses your precise (GPS) location.

I don't know where/how to find that setting on the Facebook website in the browser, but if/when your browser requests access to your location, there should be a notification and you can just press disallow. (If you've previously allowed it, it probably remembers your choice and will continue to allow it in the future. In this case, go into your browser settings and remove Facebook from the allowed sites to access your location.)

I set up a couple of test folders, each with 80,000 one meg files.  From my tests, using FileRecycle will cause the issues you saw.  When I used FileDelete, the script took about five seconds to run with little to no hit to CPU and RAM.

Well shoot! Looks like I picked the wrong one. Thanks for getting to the bottom of this. And thanks for the script in the first place.
2984
Yeah, that script definitely caused issues. I moved all the images that were already kept into another directory so it could just resume from where it left off and started the script up again. Here are some screenshots of behavior I saw.

As expected, it immediately maxed out my CPU usage to 100% and made my computer somewhat sluggish (occasional "hiccups" of unresponsiveness). I opened the task manager to take a look at the CPU usage and noticed the RAM usage climbing sky high:

Screenshot - 15-04-22, 10-19-37.png

Screenshot - 15-04-22, 10-21-35.png

RAM usage kept climbing, so I closed out Chrome, Firefox, and other misc. programs, anything using more than 100MB of RAM got shut down.

Screenshot - 15-04-22, 10-22-04.png

The RAM kept climbing up, but soon peaked around 13-14GB of RAM(!), and then started alternating between going down and climbing back up, like so:

Screenshot - 15-04-22, 10-26-25.png

And to get an idea of how fast/slow the files were being deleted, here's an animated gif:

AHK Scrip Speed.gif

I lowered the process priority so it wouldn't slow down my PC and left it running for a few hours while I was away from my PC again. It eventually finished the job, though I'm not sure how long it took.

Final results of the cull: ~80,000 files totaling ~80GB reduced to ~13,000 files totaling ~13GB. I guess that means the average filesize is about 1MB per image.
2985
Sorry I wasn't clear. I took your advice about being paranoid about file deletions, made a backup of the 80GB directory of screenshots, then I used Skwire's script to delete things. I figured if I wasn't happy with the results while it ran over night I could just restore the backup and try something else.

Starting at almost 80,000 files (~78k to be more precise) I let it run for about half an hour before I went to bed, at which point it had reduced the number of files to just below 60,000 files. So, about 20k files per half hour meant it should have finished in about 2 hours.

When I came back to my computer this morning just before 10AM, my PC was completely locked up and unresponsive. The clock still said 8:23AM, the mouse cursor wouldn't move, and ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-shift-escape would not bring up the task manager.

After resetting my computer, I see that the AHK script didn't finish the job. There are still about 23,000 files left and there should be roughly only 13,000 when it finishes. So it still had about 10k to go before things locked up.

I'm guessing that the reason my PC locked up was due to the script, as I can't recall ever having such a total lockup on this system, and the script was putting my Core i7 2600K to near 100% usage on all cores/threads.

I've used Speakonia (http://www.cfs-techn...ies.com/home/?id=1.4) for this, but I'll take a look at some of these others, now that I know about them!

I know this is a bit of an outdated recommendation from Jimdoria, but I downloaded Speakonia this past weekend planning to use it for my Ludum Dare 32 entry since it was recommended to me as a good TTS tool by someone unassociated with DC. The installer not only tried to install additional crapware, but it made an effort to confuse the user (me) into not being sure whether "OK" meant to install the crapware or to not install the crapware.

It was something really horrible, such as "Are you sure you don't want to install any crapware? Press OK to cancel."

I opened task manager, killed the process, and mentally added Speakonia to my malware/crapware list. For that reason alone, I can only strongly suggest you avoid Speakonia at all costs!

I don't care if the traffic to Google ads are encrypted. I want all traffic to/from Google ads blocked, encrypted or not. :D
2988
Thanks!

I'm letting it run now, keeping only every 6th file. It doesn't win any prizes for speed, but it does seem to be working as advertised. I'll let it run overnight so it can finish its thing and I'll report back later.

Cows Fascinated by the Sounds of a Didgeridoo

This is going off topic, but that guy's didgeridooing reminded me a lot of the beat/sounds from this song. Especially as it sounds starting around 2:50.

EDIT: But now that I'm hearing them in such a way that I can directly compare them, they of course don't sound as similar as I thought. :D
2990
Hi folks,

When I do Ludum Dare, I take screenshots which I can compile into a timelapse video. This means that over the course of 72 hours I often end up with around 80,000 to 120,000 screenshots. I've recently decided that I don't need to take so many screenshots and the timelapse video will be just fine, either by being shorter or having a slower framerate. But that's all kind of beside the point.

So basically, I have ~80,000+ files all in the format of ss######.png (where the #s are actually digits, such as ss000001.png) and I'd like a utility that will allow me to easily cull them down such that I either delete every N images, or perhaps even more effective, delete all of them except every N images.

Is there already a utility that exists to do this? If not, can one be provided as a Coding Snack?

Thanks.

Congratulations mouser for the successful fundraiser and for the amazing community you have fostered here! It's really great to see the generosity of so many helping to keep this site going.

As for the fundraiser themed "LOLMousers," I was planning to make more of them for this fundraiser, but that site (cheezburger.com) has devolved into something that is no longer LOLCats. :(

I played your entry, Deo, and I enjoyed it! I even beat it.  The damn robots scared the hell out of me.  I think you did a great job with the theme.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback.  :-*

I found a fun little tower defense about poultry birds on a farm, which will at least get a quick writeup. But I figured out an "artful pattern" pretty quick, and then my computer couldn't handle past level 19, so I took a screen shot and then had to close it down.

No links or screenshots? 8)

Phew! Ludum Dare 32 is officially over. Now there will be about 3 weeks of playing/rating games before the final results are announced.

I submitted my entry a few hours ago, then went out to eat dinner to celebrate. I'll post a more thorough write-up of my experience with this LD later, but the short of it is this:

This one started out rather frustrating, and I ended up scrapping about 3-4 ideas (after spending precious hours on each of them!) and I even gave up a couple of times. Shortly after I gave up For RealsTM, I had another idea and decided to try it out. It ended up working for me, though by then most of my available free time had been used up on the scrapped ideas. Therefore, this one is really rough and not very polished. That said, it's still a success and I feel pretty good about the outcome.

Here's a link to my entry:

And don't forget you can browse all entries here:

Though I prefer the look and organization of the entries as listed here:

Living Room / Re: Youtube Subscription Channels
« Last post by Deozaan on April 12, 2015, 02:28 PM »
I'm not sure how different this is - above is subscription for one channel, IIUC this below is a general YT subscription.

YouTube's paid subscription offering takes shape — and it's almost here (The Verge)

this caught my eye:

And YouTube's carrot comes with a stick — creators are required to participate in the subscription offering, or every video on their channels will be set to private, sources said. The move will likely upset some creators, who may object to aspects of the program.

Does this mean I get paid when a subscriber watches my videos even if they don't see any ads?
