Living Room / Re: Dana Hanna (Software Jedi) plans to write 30 programs in 30 days

it's a great excercise i think, so i'm all for it.
i do agree though that there are few programs that can get finished to a degree where they'll actually be useful in 24 hours.

its another 80-20 rule: you can whip up a program in 24 hours, but that's just the 20% part.  to make it actually useful you still need the other 80% of work to work out the kinks.

is this a good time to remind people to send some credits with a nice note to people when you see them doing something on the forum that you want to show support for?

I'd also really like to hear Mark's thoughts on "games" one might play to break through resistance, whether it might be giving yourself "points" for doing things, or figuring out other approaches.  Ideas for possible software tools that could be used for such purposes.
29732
I really liked Forster's ideas about getting around the resistance of the reactive primitive part of our brains, and the interpretation of this part of the brain as reacting to a task as a "threat" or as an obstacle to be avoided.

I like the idea of "tricking" this part of your mind in various ways to get the momentum going, since I find that his description fits some of the problems I have in working on bigger projects - once you get started it's ok, but sometimes just getting started can be incredibly hard.

I'd like to hear more about his thoughts on these techniques, and any other tricks he has tried or is thinking about, which ones work, which ones don't.

Sounds like a very interesting subject to ask him about.

outstanding find!
(credits coming your way)

The Creative Toolbox excercises are really nice.  Great thing to do with your kids as well perhaps.

Really nice short concise excercises to help you think creatively and productively.

great subject for discussion nudone; i think one of the things those of us who have read the latest forster book is his willingness to say, this worked, this old idea didn't, and let's think about how to fix it.  so i think it would be useful to talk to him in depth about this - about ideas that have turned out to be not so useful, and how he goes about experimenting, etc.  i think he may be one of the best people to talk to about our experiment and get his advice on how to look for ideas that work, etc.

in this case it's called quickpaste because at the top of the menu are recent clips for pasting; it's on the bottom that you see these formatting options (which format whatever is in the clipboard and then quickly paste it).

Best E-mail Client / Re: I wish I could punch the idiots that made TheBat!
« Last post by mouser on September 14, 2006, 06:38 AM »
this might be a good general lesson:
Whenever a program/website/hard disk/registry offers to "automatically fix" a problem, a HUGE FLASHING WARNING light should go off in your brain.  These autorepair features are very often causing more harm than they fix.  Better to 100% fully investigate and backup your stuff before you proceed.

(this is of course in on way meant to excuse thebat; losing emails is unacceptable for an email client, there is just no way around it).
29738
just a clarification in case its not clear, the quickpaste feature allen describes is from Clipboard Help+Spell.  You can create as many custom formatting profiles as you want and they appear in the quickpaste menu and in the formatting panel in the main window.

Living Room / Re: Monitor Display problem
« Last post by mouser on September 14, 2006, 05:17 AM »
that is pretty unusual..  the non-technical answer is that your monitor is probably dying.. try to find a spare to confirm its the monitor and then replace it - might not be any other valid alternative.

assuming you are asking about wanting to pay for a vps account from a web hosting provider (and not asking about the software like cpanel that drives these), i can only recommend to check out: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

even making the simplest programs seems like it would get a bit tedious half way through, but i give him credit for going for this.. let's see what he makes.  finally a challenger to Skrommels throne!

Surely any software that writes to a disk should check to see if the disk has space and not destroy your data if there is no space left. That isn't exactly 'catering for any eventuality' but in many cases an inevitability!

I agree with carol here, an email program is like a security program - it MUST plan for just situations as inevitabilities and insure no loss of email.

However i believe i have had this disk full situation happen to me and thebat not only handled it properly but knew not to consider mail it tried to retrieve and store as retrieved from the server (i think i'm remembering this correctly).

So i wonder if hirudin is sure about the cause of the corruption?  I've never lost a single email to thebat in 8 years or so and i consider this one of my #1 reasons for continuing to use it.

Have you checked the folders on your disk where the email account data is stored and done a file contents search for the emails that have gone missing - maybe they got misfiled somehow (or else check recycle bin etc.).

I feel for your loss Hirudin - if that happened to me i would be well beyond furious - i would be in a full blown shouting and throwing things rage for days.

i really liked NewsRover for reading posts.  A new v12 just came out.  I know it does binaries but i don't know how well.  For text it's pretty fantastic; nice search feature, sorting features, multiple servers, etc.

well i definitely disagree that writing a compiler isn't a big deal; it's getting easier very year but it is no small matter no matter how you do it.  I should note however that his "language" is not compiled to machine code or even byte code, but instead builds vbscript or another high level stuff, so it's not clear at all what kind of processing it really does and it may turn out to be a glorified preprocessor.
