Screenshot Captor / Re: Error '15.0' is not a valid floating point value
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2006, 08:55 AM »
ill be updating a version not susceptible to this but for now if you just delete (or rename) your ScreenshotCaptor.ini file in the program directory the error will dissapear. (or if you have settings you like you could just open up the ini and change the .0 numbers to ,0

the problem is that it saved the file in one locale, and you changed to another, and now when reading the ini its getting confused when it finds certain numbers with . in then when it expects ,

While i wouldnt say i feel the same exact way, i will say this, which i think is related.

My experience has been that programming is mostly a matter of learning basic skills.
After 5 or 10 years of coding, you know enough about programming that you are thinking in a meta language and it doesn't matter all that much what the target language output is.  This means that getting proficient in a new language is easy and fast.

What's also true though is that it's common to meet a very new programmer who has read just a book on language X, and proclaims "I know X", without ever having written more than a handfull of lines of code in any language.  They may know some of the rules of the language syntax but they probably can't use it effectively.

i just remembered this issue came up once in the past:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1579.0

it has to do with different floating point formats in different language locales.

i'll update screenshot captor with similar fix.

UrlSnooper / Re: URLsnooper refuses to start!
« Last post by mouser on September 20, 2006, 06:32 AM »
none of our programs do anything crazy like this when they are not licensed.
when you say it wouldn't start can you be more specific? you can also mail me at [email protected].

when you say it worked, do you mean it actually found urls on the internet?
it sounds like it could be a problem with the winpcap driver.

next time it happens try mailing me a copy of the Settings.ini file in the url snooper directory and maybe i can see something wrong, and try deleting the Settings.ini file and see if that lets the program start up, maybe there is some problem with the ini file.

can you mail me your screenshotcaptor.ini file and i will be able to figure out the problem; sounds like i may have introduced a bug in latest version.  it will be in c:\program files\screenshotcaptor

this idea isnt for a bootable rescue cd as i understand it,
it would be a cd with
ALL DonationCoder.com software, including skrommels utils, coding snacks, etc
Plus maybe some trial versions of software that has won our awards or minireviews or discounts?
Plus some bonus stuff maybe

Living Room / Re: How Digg Gets Everything Backwards.. And How to Fix It
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2006, 11:37 PM »
Once power users realize their power to influence the project, they often become its evangelists and actively promote the project by recruiting new members. Promoting such a project means increasing their influence, which is a stong motivating factor. If the system is truly democratic, and hard to abuse, promoting the project only decreases the influence of each individual member. This might explain why truly democratic projects remain relatively small, while projects appealing to democracy, but allowing for abuse, grow very rapidly.

that is a fascinating theory, i'm very curious to know whether it really holds up.

Since I'm really familiar with the ideas, I can do a review for week 4 or 5, if people think it would be helpful

Sounds good to me too (we're talking about Stephen Covey's ideas, right?)

General Software Discussion / Re: Benefits sell software, not features
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2006, 10:24 PM »
there are two issues here right?
one is, "DO features sell software"
and the other is "SHOULD features sell software"

I find myself susceptible to the lure of new features but as you say, new features rarely mean new benefits.  Usually it just means new stuff you don't need and won't use.  But then there is always part of you thay says "well maybe one day i will want to use a puppy-dog-in-a-basket logo on my email.."

This is a fun idea, especially if we can think of some more ideas of stuff to put on it.
It might also be something that we could send via post to donators who don't want to deal with torrent stuff, as a bonus gift.

mja, thanks for the heads up, that is very big news that filebox extender went freeware!!
It's one of the best dialog extenders and there's no excuse now for anyone to be without one of these tools.

a new feature has been added to the latest beta, where you can specify a specific alias to show on startup.
now you can create an alias group (menu) with exactly the files you want (and you can even custom name them), which will show on startup each time.

General Software Discussion / Article: The Social Bookmarking Faceoff
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2006, 08:21 AM »
Readwriteweb.com does this kind of article a lot, and the articles are useful:
"The Social Bookmarking Faceoff"

The social bookmarking market is in a steady state with two dominant players - del.icio.us and StumbleUpon. The rest of the pack, including Yahoo MyWeb, appears to be substantially behind. Will they catch up? In this post we attempt to answer that question.

We also take a look at how social bookmarking has evolved since del.icio.us. (even del.icio.us itself has evolved a lot!). We compare the features and approaches of the different companies, to see which has gained popularity and what has become the norm in this space.

http://lifedev.net/2...06/09/computer-fast/
http://www.lifehack.org/

The same is true with my study. When I knew that the computer was going to be turned off at the same time every day, my productivity soared to new heights. Now that I only had a static, limited amount of time, I had to squeeze the most out of it. I had to plan, and only work on the most important things that had to be done that day.

By working less I also found that I was more refreshed and willing to work the next day. The anticipation of the things I got to work on was much higher. AND, I was able to plan more the night before about what I was going to do the following day. With the combination of meticulous planning and anticipation of what I “got” to do the next day, work was tons more enjoyable.

it's an interesting idea; you might see our review of dialog extenders and see if any of them have any features that might be a bit similer (https://www.donation...Extenders/index.html).

It's clear to be that Forster has thought a lot about overcoming resistance.  This has come up in other forms in other threads when talking about "discipline".  I'm really anxious to hear Forster talk more about this, and tricks and techniques for actually getting your brain to work on whatever your rational mind has decided to be worked on.

I think it would be very useful to try to talk with him about ideas for software that might help these things.  Things like April's InstantBoss and other utilities to help with the Little and Often ideas.  It would be nice just to brainstorm with Mark during the interview about possible software tools that could help with this stuff.

Screenshot Captor / Comments on ScreenshotCaptor - Beta Version - 2.12.01 to 2.24.01
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2006, 06:35 AM »
v2.21.02 BETA released.

This version has the long requests non-automatic save option (See On Capture tab).
This is still a bit experimental so use with caution:
when you enable this option, each new capture will not automatically be saved (unless you modify it), so new images will overwrite old until you save.

It should speed up captures significantly, but you have to be careful you dont take 10 captures in a row in this mode without saving and then open up the window to find only your last capture has been kept.

I look forward to hearing your impressions of this new mode and whether you find it useful.

(note: i've started locking the update threads so please post impressions on a separate thread).
29674
new version 1.11.01 updated - pasting should be MUCH faster now (hopefully no less stable).
29675
v1.10.02 was just uploaded.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN EARLY BETA AND UPDATES MAY BE FORTHCOMING THIS WEEK, SO WAIT UNLESS YOU WANT TO HELP TEST.

It's also just a minor release - i'm reluctant to add major stuff while i'm still fighting with myself over v2 design, but i will try to tinker and experiment around the edges with farr v1 so that i don't forget about it.
