For what it's worth, the new member server should be orders of magnitude faster and better than the current dcmembers server.

Screenshot1, please do not post in this style, with red text and huge caps -- it's very distracting and will turn people off more than make them want to help.

Maybe you would be better off reading some articles on the history of Magic the Gathering, which is the iconic collectible card game.

I don't have an answer to your questions, BUT I can point you to a board game that simulates a collectible card game ecosystem..

"Millennium Blades is a board game about a fictional collectible card game, which is also called Millennium Blades. You begin the game on pre-release night with just your starter deck. You’ll open new packs, form collections, and sell your junk cards on the aftermarket to buy hot new cards. Trade with your friends, build up your deck, and prepare to compete at Millennium Blades Worlds for the title of World Champion!"

Maybe it can give you some insights..

There is video on the kickstarter page that explains.

Anyone who currently has a "site" hosted on dcmembers.com, please feel to message me and I can create a wp section for you on the beta dcmembers.org site to experiment with.

And any other long-time dc coder who needs a website space and doesn't have a suitable alternative.

Also: As part of the new DC, I wonder if it's not time to revive our old idea of having some regular columnists who write weekly or twice weekly blogs on some area of the software/technology scene.  Anyone feel like they might be interested in such a thing?

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Any way to make CHS hotkeys like ClipJump?
« Last post by mouser on December 12, 2017, 05:58 PM »
Hi asrjcb.
Let me make sure I understand what you are asking first.

1. Regarding clip stack:  You are saying that you can use the clip stack in CHS and it works how you need, it's just that you want the hotkey for popping a clip from the stack to work somewhat differently -- can you explain how it works now compared to how you want it to work?

2. Text formatting presets -- can you elaborate on what you want to be able to do, and in what context? There are a couple of places that CHS uses the text formatting presets and I'm not sure which area we are talking about.

I am also looking for 1 dedicated volunteer to help me move over all of skrommel's software to this new site database.  It's a fairly simple process, but it will involve creating a new entry using an online form for each of the 100 or so skrommel's apps that can be found currently on this page:
https://www.donation...m/Software/Skrommel/. You don't need any special skills, just some patience and dedication -- it's going to take some time.

Cancel that request, it was just easier for me to do it -- Skrommel's releases are now up on the beta dcmembers site.

Message me for htaccess login credentials.

A follow up to this -- after having an opportunity to swap out my main monitor, I can confirm that the weird windows repositioning problem is somehow related to the specific brand of monitor that I was using (an LG brand).  Swapping that out for another monitor, regardless of the connection (hdmi, displayport), eliminated the behavior completely.  So LG is doing something wacky that is confusing MS windows.

For something like gaming though, I'd assume 4K works well? Most modern games are not so text-dependent, so I'd think the text size problem would not be an issue

Well you're not going to have a problem with text SIZE when playing a game full screen on a 4k monitor.
However, what you are going to be doing is demanding a hell of a lot more processor power from your computer and graphics card to render a 4k image.

So the question you should ask yourself is are you willing to pay a real cost in performance of the game in order to have the increase in resolution.  For me, 4k feels like overkill on a 27 inch monitor that is 2 feet away from my eyes.  So even for games I think the trade-off is not worth it.  At that distance, 2560x1440 feels like the sweet spot to me.

A higher grade monitor could solve the brightness issue, but most of my problems are based on simply the fact of using such high resolution, and are not monitor specific.
The bottom line is that even for someone like me, who loves high-resolution and small fonts, there is a limit beyond which it's not only diminishing returns but counter productive.
For me that looks like 2560x1440 resolution on a 27 inch monitor.
Anything higher than that makes my life worse.

The specific model I tried was a DELL U2718Q (my graphics card is an nvidia gtx 660).

If I had to guess, I'd say the odds are good that he paid $100 to a company that used teamviewer to remote connect in and (at least tried) to fix his computer, and that everything is fine and nothing was taken, and that you should simply ensure that teamviewer password is changed or teamviewer uninstalled, etc. and backup everything in a safe place as always, and keep a careful eye on bank and credit cards for the next 6-12 months.

That's not to say that there isn't a risk that everything else was taken -- just a reminder that most of the time things aren't as bad as we fear.

When it comes to a monitor, higher resolution is better, right?

Not for me.  Tried using a 27 inch 4k monitor (3840x2160) for my main monitor today, and was very disapointed.
This was replacing a 27 inch monitor running at 2560x1440 that I was very happy with at 2560x1440 -- lots of real estate on the screen, but text large enough that I could read it.

At 3840x2160, the normal text size in windows is too small to read.  So the solution would require changing desktop scaling in windows -- which would be ok except in a multimonitor setup that can cause issues when you have one monitor with higher scaling than another.

The high resolution also seemed to strain the abilities of full screen apps.
And the brightness of the new ($500) monitor left much to be desired; far inferior to my 2560x1440 one.

And lastly, trying to set the resolution of this 4k monitor back down to my previous 2560x1440 resulted in a very blurry display, so that isn't an option.

I'm returning it -- just thought I'd post a word of caution to anyone considering the move to a 4k monitor -- unless you have a really serious reason to need 4k, and you've sat down in front of one to confirm you like what you see, I would reconsider whether you really want one.

If you only have a single monitor, or plan to run multiple monitors ALL at 4k, and have the spare horsepower, and have the money to get very high quality 4k bright monitors, then 4k may still be for you.
