Living Room / Omgili - Google Like Search But Limited to Forums
« Last post by mouser on September 29, 2006, 09:18 AM »
Omgili - Google Like Search But Limited to Forums, a really nice idea.

Omgili is a search engine designed to index web-based discussion forums. Omgili's unique algorithm analyzes forums not as a simple web page, but as an active discussion with a title, topic and replies.

Omgili was created in order to separate ordinary web pages from information rich discussion forums. The information contained in online forums is typically presented in a "question and answer" or debate style format. How is this significant?

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: DBISAM error #11013
« Last post by mouser on September 29, 2006, 08:19 AM »
grrrrr  >:(  damn database..
try this:
exit the program, then go to the database subdirectory of clipboard help+spell, and move the files there out of there someplace else, and restart.  please keep those database files though, because i need to write some code to auto handle this case.

someone else has posted another database problem in another thread, so clearly i have to dump dbisam or else figure out why it is occasionally freaking out..  i'll get it fixed..

Living Room / Re: Buying New PC. Suggestions?
« Last post by mouser on September 29, 2006, 06:08 AM »
a lot of people are asking you what you intend to use it for, but as Deozaan alluded to, another major issue is how comfortable you are with tinkering vs. how much you want to buy a complete system with a good warranty policy.  one of the real advantages to buying a complete system from a company like dell or gateway is that when something breaks you know who to call and where to send it.

another thing to consider of course is a laptop - the prices of laptops have come down so much lately that you really could get a reasonable laptop for not much more than $500.

hmm we seem to be getting off topic here, but that's ok..
i see one other person has had this trouble when i do a google search.. i will try to search the code and see what could cause it - it sounds like it's trying to add a database item without setting a date for it.  that really shouldn't be possible but i'll see what can be found and hopefully have answer before monday.
in the meantime you could try deleting the files in the database directory and see if that fixes it.

ah i see the issue - i've been packing a settings ini by mistake but its not actually "installed" by the installer, so its not like it was erasing anyone's settings.  but those of you who unpack the files manually were seeing it - good thing you were aware enough not to overwrite your existing settings.

Mark, welcome to the site!

Great to have you stop by  :)

I have to say that i have been very pleasently surprised by the effectiveness (at least so far) of using your techniques for just getting yourself to start working on a project (ie telling yourself "i'll just open the folder", or telling yourself "i'll just work on it for 5 minuts").  It's amazing how much resistance your mind can drum up against starting to work on something, and figuring out a trick to jump start the process really does help.

i always planned to add a feature to let you add a note in a section quickly, and expand the note keeping features of CHS.  But i think a quick look at the notetaking thread and superboyac's recent roundup will show you, CHS is severely lacking in features that a good notetaking app has.  im not sure i wont come back and do a notetaking app eventually, but i cant honestly say i wouldn recommend chs for this anytime soon.

superboyac's roundup: https://www.donation...oteTakers1/index.php

now, that's not to say i wont add a hotkey to add something as a favorite, just thought i should speak out against using CHS as your main notetaking app.

I watched these videos and LOVED them.  Good stuff.  ;D

It appears from the content of this video that this University of Florida professor -- whom everyone has to take in the business school -- got REALLY REALLY REALLY HIGH before one of his classes.  As I am told, he was fired the next day...

Erm... Whatever happened to the TextPipe Pro prize?
-Ethan

Sorry i missed this question when it was posted.

The TextPipe people decided they didn't want to donate any copies for us to give away.  It was my mistake to put it on the drawing form.  It's the first time a company has declined to give us any copies, but I still should have confirmed with them first before I added it to the drawing form.  My apologies.

This may be of questionable legality.  Visit the page for an interview with the author..

A small utility called FairUse4WM has been making the rounds for the past month and it has been giving the people at Microsoft quite a headache. The utility is able to strip Windows PlaysForSure media files of their digital rights management (DRM) allowing for unlimited playback and distribution.

Microsoft patched the first exploit a few days after its initial release only to see the author of FairUse4WM adapt to the new changes. Now we see that Microsoft is in full-blown attack mode and the Redmond-based company claims that it has developed a patch to render FairUse4WM 1.2 useless. But for every patch that Microsoft releases, there will likely be another update for FairUse4WM to get the ball rolling again.

In light of all of the news surrounding FairUse4WM and Microsoft's efforts to shut it down, Engadget was able to get an exclusive interview with the author the utility and get his thoughts on why he created the utility, how easy it was to code and how Microsoft dropped the ball on DRM:

Living Room / NoteMesh: Collaborate to Graduate
« Last post by mouser on September 28, 2006, 11:04 AM »

NoteMesh is a free service that allows college students in the same classes to share notes with each other. It works by creating a wiki for individual classes that users can edit. Users are free to post their own lecture notes or contribute to existing lecture notes. The idea is that users in the same class can collaboratively create a definitive source for lecture notes. To learn more, take the tour.

Living Room / Article: Beauty And The Brain
« Last post by mouser on September 28, 2006, 10:47 AM »
I don't buy this argument, but it's a nice read..

...
Experiments led by Piotr Winkielman, of the University of California, San Diego, and published in the current issue of Psychological Science, suggest that judgments of attractiveness depend on mental processing ease, or being "easy on the mind."

"What you like is a function of what your mind has been trained on," Winkielman said. "A stimulus becomes attractive if it falls into the average of what you've seen and is therefore simple for your brain to process. In our experiments, we show that we can make an arbitrary pattern likeable just by preparing the mind to recognize it quickly."
