Developer's Corner / Re: Flash Game Development Contest
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2006, 11:37 AM »
Nudone is going to be releasing the Cody Art Pack very soon.

I am pledging a DonationCoder.com cody mug to anyone who enters this contest with a flash game that has cody in it.  I don't care how good the game is, if it's playable and has Cody in it, you'll get a mug.

Ok guys (Mastertech this means you too), can we please try to keep it civil.  It seems to me that both of you have some real knowledge about these things, and its silly to see you guys arguing about stuff that doesn't need arguing about.  There are going to be situations where these settings help you and hurt you; it's interesting to debate when those conditions are met.  No need to get all defensive about it.  Pleas remember we keep discussions civil on this forum!

This is a nice deep side scrolling semi-stealth game, with some advanced controls and a retro platformer cold war feel. Pretty sweet.

Living Room / Re: digg rigging?
« Last post by mouser on October 13, 2006, 12:02 AM »
Fascinating interview on siliconvalleysleuth about user/submitter:

...
Are there any concerns that User/Submitter will lower the credibility of Digg and its ranking system?
Absolutely. But that stems from the notion of Digg lowering the credibility of Digg. Fact is, because of Digg's overgenerous social nature, the active participants that mold the Digg network are suffering (whether they know it or not) from a) their lack of digging privacy and b) the weight of the network. We're not at all claiming that Digg is a social failure and users should give up hope, but we're placing the spotlight on some ridiculously wide holes in their social atmosphere -- holes that need closing. The 'loose social networking' trend is over. Digg needs to regress some of its social networking features.

While it's possible that we could determine nearly every front page story on digg, that's not our goal; we desire limitations. That said, the goal of User/Submitter is to exploit but control the fundamental flaws in Digg's social network so that it can sustain. Maybe then, they'll fix these flaws.

Living Room / Whitney Music Box - Flash Visualization of Music
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2006, 11:16 PM »
I don't really understand this but it's interesting.

This weekend I’ve been playing, once again, with the ideas of experimental film pioneer John Whitney, using both graphics and audio. While Whitney was interested in turning musical ideas into motion graphics, I’m doing the inverse — turning one of his key animation ideas back into music.

Whitney made a number of films based around the simple idea of harmonic relationships. Above is a visual example of one his ideas that I implemented in Flash.

Living Room / Blog Article: 100+ Ways to Rejuvenate the Games You Already Own
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2006, 10:35 PM »
Very nice ideas..

In the last fifteen years, board game designers and dedicated board gamers around the world have learned a thing of two about what really makes board games fun for adults. The principles used in modern board game designs can be used to help you rejuvenate your old board games. You, too, can learn to love board games again.

It's time for you to break out the old board games. But I PROMISE you: you're not going to play them the way you remember playing them! This time, you're going to have fun with them. All it takes is a little preparation: no more than ten minutes for any game.

All you have to do is select a few new rules, and possibly write down some instructions on some index cards, for your old game to become fun again. It's like getting dozens of brand new games, better games ... for free!

if its just the FPS for a game, i would guess it could be your graphics card driver.

i'm not a big game player but occasionally i see posts about how a game has impossibly slow framerates due to incompatibility or old graphics driver.  an update of game or driver fixes it eventually.

General Software Discussion / Re: Pre Upload Website Viewer
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2006, 09:24 PM »
I highly recommend that everyone do the extra work required to set up a test site so you can try things out first before making them live.

A good approach is to upload the entire site to a test directory on your server where you can test everything.
however if you have absolute links on your pages like "http://www.mysite.com/index.html" that that won't work.

An alternative would be to have a secondary web account somewhere, perhaps a free web hosting account, where you can upload and test stuff and try it.

Now, another alternative would be to set up a webserver on your local pc for testing, which is becoming easier and easier.  There are different approaches depending on what technologies you use on your site (php, mysql, etc.)

Assuming you are using windows, you might start here: http://en.wikipedia..../Comparison_of_WAMPs

And a reasonable choice would be XAMPP (for windows or linux or mac):
http://www.apachefri...ds.org/en/xampp.html

Note that this may very well be overkill for what you need - there are also link checkers that may be more than enough for you if you don't use any scripting, databases, forums, etc.  Hopefully people will post some more site checking type of link checkers soon - i look forward to seeing them.  Some html editors include such tools (for example Dreamweaver).

ProcessTamer / Re: Mouse lagging... but figured it out!
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2006, 03:21 PM »
strange..
well the first thing to see is if setting the process to Ignore really does solve your problem - that would be the biggest clue...

but otherwise i'm not sure what could cause the phenomena..  Process Tamer itself (the tray tool) is such a tiny little thing with no user interface to speak of (the configuration tool is a separate program), so it's really hard to imagine why it would interact with litestep other than by trying to tame it.  (Launch Bar Commander is an entirely different thing because of the docking behaviors).

how strange. i'm curious to know what the explanation ends up being.
adobe isn't the best behaved cokmpany so i can't say i'm all that surprised at their programs exhibiting mystery behaviors..

ProcessTamer / Re: Mouse lagging... but figured it out!
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2006, 02:56 PM »
:) nice post actually.

so basically litestep.exe was using high cpu resources, and process tamer was taming it, which was having a negative effect on its performance.

which brings up an interesting issue - should i add litesetp to the list of programs that are never tamed?

ps. this would be a good reason to turn on the balloon messages for when programs are being tamed, it would have given you a visual clue that the taming of litestep was the cause of the problem.

Living Room / Mike-O-Matic on GooTube and The Power of Branding
« Last post by mouser on October 12, 2006, 05:58 AM »
Another clear smart essay by Mike Arace.  His Blog is a daily read for me.

By the way, this kind of stuff, where marketing and brand name recognition dominate decisions and success, depresses the hell out of me and makes me wonder if there isn't a better way to run a world.

Some people have asked why Google would purchase the service when they had their own well-received competitor, Google Video. Others wonder how they could justify a $1.6 billion pricetag for a website with no substantial revenue model and huge copyright violation concerns right around the corner.
The answer is simple: branding.
...
I always looked at websites based on their technical merit.
...
It doesn’t even matter if they are technically better anymore. They own the mental associations that matter, and it will take a long, long time to change that.
From a competitive standpoint, Google realized that trying to hold back the tide with Google Video wasn’t getting them what they wanted. So they wrote a check.
