This doesn't really apply to the underlying issue, but is a good tool that I use on those occasions that I frequent ebay:  Gixen - https://www.gixen.com/faq.php

It's free, you don't have to sign in (you sign into ebay), and you can set bids on groups of items (make sure there's time between the end time, or you might win more than one).  He makes money by selling the mirror service, i.e. two separate servers so that your chances of a missed bid go down.  I can't recommend it highly enough.

For my uses, I use simplenote with Notation and ResophNotes.

curious why you use two different notetakers ?

Notation is lighter, and easier to use.  ResophNotes I run on one machine to sync the individual notes to a Dropbox folder, so I'm not totally reliant on SimpleNote (in case it goes wonky again).

Nice!

CintaNotes is one top notch note taker/jotter/grabber IMO.

One of the very few apps I missed once I decided to almost entirely stop using Windows as my desktop OS.

Highly recommended program.

The one thing that kept (keeps) me from using it is the fact that editing notes is in a different window.  Just too alien to my processes.  And looking at the screenshots, it appears that is still the case?  Can anyone that is currently using it let me know if that's the case?

For my uses, I use simplenote with Notation and ResophNotes.  They admittedly don't have as many features, but both have that one feature.

An anti spying program with source code from WZor ... Now that is interesting.

Why is that so interesting?  Just curious.

100+ Coats of Nail Polish

She could have been done with that in a fraction of the time, if she did thinner coats and every 3rd coat was Ruby Kisses Lightening. Then she wouldn't have had to wait as much for it to dry.

Doing my nails used to be a hobby of mine, before I acquired my first computer. I used to routinely layer on 25 coats of nail polish, plus artwork, then wear it (without it chipping) till I started to noticeably outgrow the polish, which was usually about 2 weeks.

I won't ask... Ok, I will ask.  How do you happen to have this knowledge?

It's still taking longer, but they're better funded now from a crowd funded stock offering, so it looks even better.  They've stopped giving dates, and instead been giving more detailed updates into the process, to show movement towards the finish line.

They are planning to sell 100 preproduction units this year, to deliver next year.

Living Room / Re: Surface Pro 4 (etc); observations from long term use?
« Last post by wraith808 on June 13, 2016, 06:23 AM »
Decided to buy now. Too much uncertainty over whether the next version will be out during this tax year. And I can use it now. And might still have business profits to offset in a few years when it comes to replace it.
Was going to go for the i7 8/256GB Book but in the end went for i5, 8/128GB; I didn't think I could justify paying 44% more, when I can just do anything needing more power on a desktop. I expect it will significantly reduce my desktop usage.
So hoping for the best now.

I've actually decided to sell my XPS13 and go with the i5/8/256.  Haven't decided between the book and the regular surface yet, so it will be interesting to see how yours goes, as I won't be fully ready to pull the trigger until the fall.  Congrats on your purchase, and let us know what you think!

General Software Discussion / Re: How to Stop Windows 10 from Spying on You

There is this Slashdot article about a guy who created a simple 'hello world' dummy application in Visual Studio 2015 (C++). The resulting executable contains code that "phones home" to MS. Of course, MS can do what they like with software they provide to anyone for free. If you would ask me (and I know you didn't) it is even their right...just not in their right mind.

After taking a look, the telemetry calls are logging to the local drive, not phoning home as claimed.

You might look at custom cables also.  Cables that have heatshrinked connectors and techflex sleeving are very robust. (Just getting into mechanical keyboards, I've seen a lot about custom robust cabling).  They're expensive though, and I've never seen any of the custom stuff on outlets like amazon.

Example paracord with heatshrinked connectors.

They should also have a convenient link somewhere. As of now, you have to remember it.  There's no link (at least that I've found) conveniently situated on the site.

Doorkickers is on that list too.

And they now have a timer on them, so you know when they run out, which is a step in the right direction.

Me personally, looking at the characters and lore that they've introduced since your cut off time (s5), I can't say that I would have been happy to lose them, and the stories they engendered.  That said, I've cut down my network viewing a lot because of the tendencies of networks to cancel shows before they've even had a chance to get their footing.  One wonders if the death of a show is dictated by its performance, or is a self-fulfillment of their cancellation because of the focus of the networks on the shows that immediately garner an audience.

PayPal accepted my appeal!  ;D

Now to close my bank account, as the bank says I will be 100% liable for any future fraud regarding that account.

Congratulations!  I figured they would if pressed- there seems to be no reason for them to have denied it in the first place.

police not going to do anything.
but do push the bank, itunes, and paypal as they have the ability to reverse transactions.

The point isn't for the police to do anything, but have an official record.  That record of facts is important in the process.  And is a lot more cogent and indeed verifiable and generates more trust than something taken over the phone.  It's to preserve your rights, and theirs, and keep things above board.  I'd still recommend doing it.  I had something similar happen, and had to file a report.  It was a pain, but when they ask you to do something, I've found it's better to just bite the bullet and do it.

I'll just add one thing for those who aren't familiar with TeamViewer -- at least when i set up mine by default TeamViewer itself created a random password for remote access (rather thank asking me to type one in) and it was SIX characters long (and i believe it's just uppercase, lowercase, and digits).

So it would be entirely plausible that a brute force attack would be able to guess passwords.

Thankfully I do not leave TeamViewer running, and have only used it on occasion when traveling.  I have also set a long passphrase, so I should be ok, but I'll probably avoid using TeamViewer for a while just to be safe.

They're not talking about access passwords- those are generated on a per use basis.  They're talking about the master account password- a totally different animal.

When things get ugly, there's always time for popcorn.

But yeah, I totally agree Stoic.  Anything that allows access to the internet, and controls something so sensitive, but doesn't have lockout limits is pretty stupid.

of course, where else would you mount a switch!

I know you've had it for a while, but wouldn't this be a 'warranty' claim?

It is.  But I have to pay postage from China, and their shipping options suck.  So at that point, I decided to just write it off.  Too much trouble for what it's worth.  I might revisit it if the CHIP doesn't work out well.

I was disappointed with the Onion- mostly because I couldn't get it to turn on because of their quality problems with the power switch.  Hopefully this will be better.

presumably the switch is one of those damn SMD jobbies - could you perchance just scrape it off and short the traces?

It was actually a piece of plastic that jutted out from between the sandwiched part, so I can't even get in there to see.  Most people used a pin to move the position, but for some reason that wouldn't work for me.

« Last post by wraith808 on June 05, 2016, 07:37 PM »
Most of the solutions that you've been using require that your files be in a certain location.  They're not backup solutions- they're sync solutions.  For google drive, it will create a drive folder.  Only the files in that folder will be synced.  Same with Onedrive, and Dropbox.  If you really want to use a sync solution as your backup, and want to use one of these for it, you have to make use of symbolic links so you can store the files in the folder they want you to, but it's accessible where you want to access it from.  Or you can use Cubby.  It allows you to make any folder a sync folder.  https://www.cubby.com/

I just ask, because I ended my experiment last year.  I posted up my experiences, and my reasoning when I got rid of it.

So seeing DC'ers take the plunge and enjoy it, I was just wondering.  I think my next frontier is the Surface.

You've totally moved to Mac?  How are you finding it?
