I just got home and found my computer (Windows 7 x64) had rebooted after a BSOD, and I noticed a Windows logo in the tray which I had never seen before.

I clicked it and got a message about a free upgrade to Windows 10:

Anyone else seeing this?

NECRO THREAD ARISE!

I bought this game back when it was mentioned in this thread, but never really played it other than for perhaps an hour the day I bought it. I felt like it was still too early in development and I was waiting for it to feel more finished. (That's just the impression I had about the game then, maybe it was finished after all.)

I saw an officially licensed Captain Forever game show up on Steam recently (in late March) and looked into it but right now it's Early Access, which almost always guarantees I'm not interested (yet) in it due to too many stories about some Early Access games never delivering on their promises.

So it may or may not be good/fun for people who enjoy the Captain Forever games. That said, I've come across something else that is similar, but has been much more enjoyable for me in the small amount of time I've had to play it.

It's called Reassemly.

Some programs allow you to use ctrl-shift-v to paste without the copied formatting.

I remember when Chrome first came out, I wasn't very impressed by it. But after a while it showed significant improvement and I gradually made the shift from Firefox to Chrome as my primary browser.

Back when Google Chrome launched, I downloaded the beta, played with it for a few minutes and promptly uninstalled it. Dismissing it as pointless and redundant (not to mention not nearly as good as Firefox).

Recently I found out my brother uses Chrome and I asked him why and he mentioned a couple of things that got me interested in trying it again: It launches faster than Firefox and each tab runs in its own process so if one tab crashes it doesn't bring down the entire browser.

Maybe Vivaldi will follow a similar pattern.

I stated in another thread that I recently got the Surface 2, which is an ARM device running Windows RT. And I'm almost in love with it. If only it ran full Windows, which the Surface 3 does, I'd absolutely love it!

I would definitely buy one, especially the one mentioned in this thread (Pro 3, 8GB RAM, i7, 256GB) if it wasn't so expensive. :-* :-* :-*

General Software Discussion / Re: Hola VPN sells users' bandwidth
« Last post by Deozaan on May 28, 2015, 01:32 PM »
I installed Hola as a Chrome extension some time ago (within the past year) when I first heard about it from someone who is less technologically inclined than I am asking me if it was safe to use. (In fact, I still have it installed (disabled) as I write this--something I'll fix right away!) It seemed to do what it said, but I also didn't like the idea that all the traffic was being routed through who knows where.

I said that it looked like it was probably safe to use if you really needed to, but I recommended to always disable the extension when she didn't need the VPN features so that she could be sure it wasn't "spying" on her (gathering her information or using her services) in any way.

Looks like I was right to do that.

Thanks for sharing this.

Don't know if this is common practice these days, but the one who thought this up deserves to be taken out back...

It's not that uncommon for games that are frequently updated, such as MMOs. But I have to admit it's a bit puzzling as to why they chose to go this route.

I suppose it's a form of DRM. It won't download the game until you've verified with their servers (by logging in) that you legitimately own it.

Thanks! It worked.

But what does this even mean?

ContraptionMaker Password.png

They tell me 2 rules, tell me my password matches 2 of 3 rules, then tells me 4 rules must be met.

I found some other weirdness with Home, Page Up, and Page Down inserting characters (the letter "k") instead of navigating the caret in the text fields.

These minor quirks aside, this looks to be a fun game!

Another possibility is to make one theme with Aero, and save it as a custom theme. Then do the same thing with a non-Aero theme. Then you only have to click the custom themes to switch between them.

Hardcore Gamer Mom In China Gives Birth In an Internet Cafe, Goes Back to Gaming
-Arizona Hot (May 21, 2015, 12:12 PM)

Ok... that's way beyond f'd up. I get the joke... but stuff like that should just be a joke and not reality. Just... wow.

This is very off-topic for this thread, but if you follow the source links, you'll see an interesting game of "Telephone" happening where the story gets further and further from the truth with each rewrite. By the time The Mary Sue got to it, it was already pretty distorted. (Also, what's with "news" outlets citing other "news" outlets as their only source?)

Here are some quotes from comments on various sites:

The Daily Mail says she was just surfing the web, she didn’t have enough money for a motel so hung out in the internet café. Also she gave birth in the bathroom stall not near the computers. There are surveillance images of her coming out of the toilets.
-pdragon57

From what I get from the Chinese source, my read of the situation would be: she had a fight with her family that caused her to leave home to travel to another province, then her money got stolen. Internet cafes are open through the night, and the birth took place at four in the morning - I suspect she went there more for a cheap place to stay than to satisfy her gaming/internet addiction.

The details surrounding the birth (it took place in a toilet, she was shaking, she refused to wash the blood of her hands) sound pretty terrible, that's why I suspected she might have suffered from some kind of shock or breakdown, which might explain why she sat down in front of the computer again and appeared calm (admittedly, I'm no psychiatrist).

So there is probably some combination of factors that made her refrain from going to the hospital until it was too late - e.g. she had no money, she had a fight with her family, she was in a foreign town.

All in all, I feel bad for her and hope she and her child will be alright.

In Edge [aka Project Spartan], the new tab page -- which appears whenever the user requests a new tab -- is much busier, filled not only with images of the most-frequently-visited websites, but also news and other content from MSN, as well as apps Microsoft happens to highlight.

Ew...

It should be noted that that particular thread is for Windows XP. I'm not sure how/if it relates to Windows Vista/7/8/10, or if the patcher would work on anything newer than XP.

As for the patcher itself:

I'm not sure if this is the same thing you are experiencing but I just reinstalled Windows 7 and have had problems with icons not showing in the tray when I start up. Some googling found that this is an "intended feature" of Windows. Basically, Microsoft never thought Windows would start up as fast as modern hardware has allowed it to, so they hardcoded in a length of time upon booting in which, if any programs open up, their icons will not show in the tray.

The suggested solutions I found are to slow your computer down. Or wait a full minute after the OS boots before loading your startup programs (sounds like a good use for App's Lacuna Launcher from NANY 2009!). Or rebuild the icon cache. Or edit some DLL file to make Windows not so stupid about this.

Glacier sounds pretty cool if your backup storage needs are relatively small. Doing some rough calculations, Glacier would cost about $370/year for 3TB of data. iDrive is $375/year for up to 10TB of data (not counting the discount). Considering JavaJones' current usage and needs, plus the greatly discounted 2 years of service, I don't think Glacier would offer him any benefit over iDrive.

I believe that Chrome updates extensions similarly to how Android updates apps: If it doesn't require any new permissions, it silently updates. If the new version requires new permissions that you haven't previously granted it, it still updates it, but disables it until you explicitly give the OK.

In my (admittedly limited) experience with my Nook, it asks me, each and every time that an app wants to update.  They're on my notification screen, and I have to respond in order to get it to actually download and install the updates.

That may be a Nook-specific customization, or you may have at some point disabled auto-updates in the Play store, in which case it would just notify you that there are available updates.

Was the compilation mentioned here before? If so, perhaps it was in The Best Japanese Science Fiction Stories mentioned in this thread.
