General Software Discussion / Re: Process Closer
« Last post by MilesAhead on September 06, 2014, 12:17 PM »
I use Process Explorer for that. Process Closer won't be able to kill applications without a window.

Of course not.  That's not what it's for.  It's for conveniently killing applications that have a visible window using an easy mouse motion.  For killing by name there's always command line and other utilities.

Edit:  It also has a "has stopped responding" detector.  The emphasis seems to be on quickly getting rid of dead windows.

General Software Discussion / Process Closer

I just ran into this yesterday and tried it out. Process Closer is yet another process kill close utility for Windows. What sets it apart is the usage. It runs in the Tray. When you want to kill a program you left click the tray icon. This opens a tooltip type window that says Drag and Kill. Put your mouse on that, then right mouse drag to the window of the process you want to kill. A confirmation dialog pops up.

No need to type in process name or window title. Very intuitive freeware.

Note that the link is to the Snapfiles listing since going to the developer's site I could find no link for Process Closer. Just a corporate outsourcing page.

Do the drives spin/power down after inactivity?

I'm just making a wild guess.  But if your disk monitor program cannot gather performance info and delayed writes are failing I wonder if it could be that the disks are asleep?

Check if all HD are in Performance Mode with sleep/spin down settings at Never.
Do not allow network cards to shut down to save energy. I've never been much of a fan of sleep energy saving settings.  To save energy I shut the system off overnight.  :)  I realize in a corporate environment sometimes you gadda' do what you gadda' do though.

 I read this post last night, and STILL can't see any use for this type of thing lol  Anybody wanna explain how this would be remotely helpful?  I mean...It shaves like 2 seconds or 2 clicks from doing it manually (By either creating a new text document then copypasta the name into it, or type the name manually...)

This sounds vaguely familiar.  Perhaps I had something similar back in Win9x.  But the benefit is easier to see if you select several or several hundred files.  If you have a need for such matching text files.

General Software Discussion / Re: Way to hide a desktop icon temporarily?

The scheduling means you pretty much have to use a service that's easier to use than Task Scheduler, or one of those Task Scheduler Gui front ends.

Then as skwire says, move to some holding folder and move back.

I'd ask around on Gizmo's freeware forum.  There may be some esoteric thing already out there.

If the "icon" is indeed a shortcut it will "disappear" if the Hidden attribute is set.  As an experiment I made a shortcut to cmd.exe and checked the Hidden attribute.  It winked out when I hit the Apply Button.  :)

I actually did think of this earlier but, if you're like me, you have "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" option enabled so this method wouldn't work.

Does the OP have that option enabled?  Let's ask.  :)
Personally I hate seeing desktop.ini files in "empty" folders so I never enable it.

The only thing is I'm no fan of using the Task Scheduler to do much of anything.  Has anyone found an easy to use replacement Daemon that doesn't have all the baggage and instabilities/quirks of Task Scheduler?

Fox Splitter was a fine add-on. Too bad it has not been upgraded.

Have you tried hacking the MaxVersion number?  I think that's all they did for the SyncPlaces group of AddOns to "update" them.  Although the CheckPlaces favicon fetch doesn't seem to work anymore.  I use FavIconReloader.

Editing an add-on to change its compatibility

If the file was loaded on program start via command line using the appropriate 32 bit or 64 bit version of ReRun may show the command line.

I don't know if that helps.

It sounds like it would require a shell hook.  Last time I looked into hooking ShellExecute it didn't seem like it was much fun.  Perhaps if there was an already written library routine out there it could take the sting out of it.  But I don't know of any.

Use File SaveAs.  It should open the dialog to the same folder.  If you want the entire path in the clipboard select the file then press Shift-richt click and click Copy As Path.  It wraps the entire path in double quotes even if it doesn't contain any spaces though.

At least I think that would work.  I don't use office software.  I just tried it in EditPad Lite7 text editor and it worked as described.

The matches have started again.  If you haven't checked out the streaming you should.  It's not bad.  You can actually see the tennis ball in Full Screen Mode.  :)

Unfortunately play is suspended due to weather at the moment.  But I was very pleased to
find out that usopen.org has free live match streaming in HD.

General Software Discussion / Re: Rollback RX or Acronis ?
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 29, 2014, 07:09 PM »
ToolWiz Time Machine sounds like Rollback RX but is free.  I didn't try it.  I did try ToolWiz Time Freeze.  It's on the idea of Returnil.  It's free.  It worked.  But I felt I could detect a slight performance hit.  I do think it's good to have in the toolbox even if not used all the time.

There is plenty of info on imaging utilities as Tomos noted.  I would just add that if you are running a machine with UEFI and GPT for the first time you may want to read up on the basic differences.  Stuff that worked on MBR systems may hose your system if run on GPT disks.

On my particular Windows 8.0 Laptop Macrium Reflect Free works with no contortions necessary.  But I am stuck with much larger backup images due to all the baggage that comes with GPT.

But sizes always increase so I can't really complain.

So sorry to hear that.

yeah, and also embarrassing that it took me so long to realize that it could be my own program causing the trouble.

I hate it when that happens.  :)
Some hotkey program messing things up. I get pissed off.  Then I find out it's one of mine.  :)

Edit:  This is a good example of what I run into.  I installed it.  Ran it.  Did a simple command.  Clicked the magnifying glass to do a search.  I got "has stopped working" dialog.  Uninstalled it.  smiley

I'd suggest you be more careful and try not to break things  :o

We don't have an unlimited supply of this junk, you know!   :D

Break?  I didn't even run commands in tabs concurrently.  Didn't even try to bend it.  :)

If im remembering correctly, that setting is now in the HOTKEY configuration page, for a given hotkey.

Thanks.  I didn't think to right click on those.  It works now.  :)

A short while I have had a similar problem, where Windows' various personal settings kept disappearing, because I didn't reboot Windows. After reboot, everything was okay.
 :-\

On that note(pun intended) they also say if it's a Laptop and/or you fast boot/hybrid/hibernate all the time, it can be a good idea to do a full shutdown now and then.  Could be an old wives' tale.  But I do a full reboot on my Laptop periodically in case it's valid.
2945
I'd try a full malwarebytes scan in case it's prankware.

Until you find the cause, if you have a pot on the speakers I'd put the hardware setting low and the software setting near the top to avoid sudden blare.

General Software Discussion / Re: Easy way to mark file as done?
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 26, 2014, 05:52 AM »

What do you mean ? It's difficult to follow your reasons.
No link ?

I mean if you have a space anywhere in the path of the file clicked on, it won't work.  That's why it has to be "%1" with the double quotes.  MD5Hash works regardless of the space because it gets everything after the program name as one string.  It doesn't get chopped at the first space.  For more info search spaces in filenames and Windows.

What script Miles ?
 :-*

It comes compiled with MD5Hash to add it to the all files and folder context menus.  I looked at it and thought better of posting because MD5Hash uses a function that gets the entire command line as one string rather than an array with each param.  I thought it would just cause confusion.  It uses %1 when most programs need "%1" with the double quotes.

Find And Run Robot / selected text to clipboard setting?
« Last post by MilesAhead on August 25, 2014, 12:11 PM »
I know I ask this every few months.  But I can't find it after 1/2 hour so..
can you tell me where the setting is to copy selected text to clipboard automatically when FARR starts?  The help still says it's on General Tab in settings.  I looked through the settings and searched this thread.  I can't find it. (sigh)  :)

I have an alias "def" that uses $$c and I know it worked with just highlighting text in the active window before pressing Pause.
