Living Room / gliffy - collaborative diagramming on the web
« Last post by mouser on October 16, 2006, 01:06 PM »
Looks interesting for collaborative diagramming.. They say they plan to offer a commercial premium verison, though i wouldn't be surprised if the real plan wasn't to get bought by a big company before they have to actually try anything like that.

Gliffy is easy, free, and fun!
Diagramming in your web browser without downloading additional software
Desktop application feel in a web-based diagramming solution
Add collaborators to your work and watch it grow
Link to published Gliffy drawings from your blog or wiki
Create many types of diagrams:
Flowcharts
UI wireframes
Floor plans
Network diagrams
UML diagrams
Any simple drawing or diagram

Developer's Corner / Storytronics: Interactive Story Telling Software
« Last post by mouser on October 16, 2006, 12:16 PM »
Do you love stories? Do they excite you, fascinate you, exhilarate you? Have you ever wanted to try to jump right into a story and speak to the people in it? Have you thought about playing the protagonist, letting your feelings and imagination steer the story in new, creative directions?

If you have, then you’ve dreamt of interactive storytelling. And, in that case, you’re not alone - from the Neverending Story to the Star Trek Holodeck, people have created countless depictions of interactive storytelling. It’s hard not to be attracted to it; an artistic medium which offers the rich emotional experience of a story, coupled with the empowerment of actually being the protagonist. We are proud to present the first successful implementation of this appealing idea: Storytronics.

Business model

Storytronics is not just a new technology; it's a movement to create a revolutionary new artistic medium, and the industry that will support it. We have developed a unique business model to further this goal - the Swat will be available to storybuilders free of charge, and, if they wish, their finished storyworld will be included in the Storytron.com storyworld library. Players will gain access to this library for a small monthly fee, and royalties from this fee will be paid to storybuilders based on the amount of use their storyworlds attract.

« Last post by mouser on October 16, 2006, 10:49 AM »
actually anyone can use it on any forum, but you need to have a forum account here where the credits can be kept track of.

but you can add a "CodyCoin" link and fun image to any profile or page anyway on any site.  Just see the instructions here:  https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4406.0

furthermore i encourage all of you to fill out your "donation blurbs" and add a direct paypal link so that people can donate directly to you and bypass the donationcredits system if they want to.

When people click on your CodyCoin link they will get taken to a page where they can donate some credits to you if they already have an account here, or make a donation to the site to fill their account (by the way the system will remember that they came to donate to you and remind them of this fact after they activate their account), or make a direct donation to you through any direct donation links you have configured.

I encourage people to put the links on their pages as a way of letting people know they accept donations and that people can donate to them safely through DC, in as small an amount as they want.  Now that we are giving back 100% of donations in the form of credits, its a nice way for people to support each other.

Renegade, please do feel free to mention it to WWF or WTO or WOW or WTF or any other acronymized organizations.  ;)

Web Log Filter / Web Log Radar
« Last post by mouser on October 16, 2006, 07:56 AM »
New tool will be available for member beta testing soon.

If you run a website and have (big) web logs (say 100mb .tgz files or 1gb uncompressed logs) that you'd like to analyze referrer patterns for (where people came from when they hit your site), post a little reply here.

Keep in mind this isn't a normal web log analyzer, it's specifically for exploring referrer stuff (i.e. who is visiting your site from what other sites).

General Software Discussion / Re: 12 Windows Explorer Alternatives Compared
« Last post by mouser on October 16, 2006, 07:40 AM »
XYPlorer has been added to the review.

Thoughts:
Wow. It only took a couple of minutes of looking around to see some features that I’d never seen before (drop text to file, ctrl+backspace breadcrumb) - and some that I’ve seen before but never this detailed (see the “Rename Special” screenshot below). If you click and hold the left mouse button on an image (in the Preview area) it enlarges until you release the mouse button. Very cool. XYplorer appears to have a slighly larger memory-footprint than Directory Opus (the only other Explorer-style file manager that I gave 4 stars), but it is less expensive.

Screenshot Captor / Re: configurable toolbar buttons
« Last post by mouser on October 16, 2006, 02:49 AM »
as the toolbar gets bigger i think it might make sense to let people customize it or at least disable ones they dont need.

Create new image file from clipboard image is pretty darn rare for a toolbar button, but i could make a hotkey shortcut for you for it.

separators for external tools, shouldn't be too hard.

welcome to the site caitsith2.
yep i use mine every day with juice conentrate.  i buy about 6 cans of different flavored juice concentrate from the supermarket and make my own custom "sodas" with cranberry+grape+apple etc.

if you have kids, here is the cheap and healthy alternative to buying soda - and you can challenge them to invent their own flavors :)

« Last post by mouser on October 15, 2006, 09:07 PM »
unfortunately this probably isn't something that could be written as a generic tool that would work in 3rd party programs, but i do agree with you that this should be something that MDI interfaces would be wise to implement, much the way modern docking systems are starting to work.

well that is really odd, i've never heard of that problem before..

ps. you can mention the name of other program here (url helper).  We try not to be paranoid about competition, etc. :)
(i'll just note that url helper grabbed some of their home page text directly from my help file when they created their program as a copy of url helper! strange.)

i'm trying to think what could possibly cause such a strange bug.. are you using an alternate windows shell (like Litestep or something?)

Living Room / Re: Blog Entry: The Field of Dreams Strategy
« Last post by mouser on October 15, 2006, 08:28 PM »
i'll just make a slight disagreement with this part:
Really it's just acknowledging that content is king, and if you do what you enjoy and are good at, generating content around your real interests and knowledge, then people will probably appreciate it.

everything i've seen in this world tells me that unfortunately content is not king - it's important to be sure but it seems to me it's unfortunately rarely the main thing that matters.

however, what i take from this is not that the most important thing to success is to focus on your idea rather your audience, but rather that in not worrying so much about the audience you will be happier and less stressed out and more true to the project.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows XP Myths
« Last post by mouser on October 15, 2006, 12:47 PM »
there's an opportunity to learn from every thread like this, so at the risk of beating a dead horse let me clarify what my main point was, since i think i was trying to say something more than that.

my main point was to treat people with more respect even if you don't think they deserve it and even if they don't give you that respect in return.  and if they attack you, rise above it, without giving in to a desire to insult them, and however tempting it might be. either you will find you misjudged them, or they will get bored and stop engaging you, or they will learn from your example and become better people, or it will become clear to everyone that something deeper is going on.  note that this advice could be taken by everyone who participated in this thread.

most importantly in remaining above the attacks you will set an example for other people who are reading the forum, that this is a place where people are trying hard to be respectfull and welcoming.

and please don't get the impression that i am taking sides against long time members of this site - i'm not, im just asking long time members to demonstrate the spirit of this site when they deal with such situations.

you can mail me at [email protected] or send me a pm message through the forum.
i have the utmost respect for the long time members on this site - i consider myself good friends with f0dder and in fact.  i'll let them speak for themselves if they feel i've treated them unfairly.  i respect your views - i might suggest though that you may be reading too much into my criticisms of them.  i'm pretty sure they understand through my other conversations in private with them how much we value them.  it's more of giving them a friendly little rap accross the knuckles here to let them know that as long term members they are expected to lift up the forum in terms of friendliness and professionalism and courtesy, and not get drawn into the muck even if their tempers get riled up.

we do make an extra effort to make new visitors feel welcome, and try hard to keep things friendly and respectful, and make new visitors feel comfortable posting.  in general i think people know by now that i don't like locking threads - i tend to feel like it's better to let these things burn out on their own, which they inevitably do, rather than end with people still feeling like they wanted to get in one last word..

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows XP Myths

dk70 you had to stir up the pot again just when it was cooling down..
this post has gotten needlessly personal, though there are still some interesting technical arguments going on.

the regular members here are the ones who should be asking themselves why they are getting all worked up about posts.

you should know by now that someone is going to step in and remind new posters that we try to be more respectful and polite here, and you should know by now that the way we deal with such situations is by treating people who we believe may be crossing the line with the respect we want them to show in kind.  that's the way this forum works.  if you think someone is out of line, then you don't start engaging in name calling, you politely point out that we try to be more respectfull here and in your reply they will see that it is true.

there's no danger of this forum degerating into flame wars, so if you see someone acting out of line, you don't have to engage in a heated battle to the death with them.  especially new visitors.  just show them by example that we take a different tone on this forum.  in time they will either realize that they like the way we do things, and tone down their approach, or they will decide they don't want to be part of the discussions, or in the worst cases we may have to ask someone to leave, but there's no need to go to defcon 1 at the first sign of trouble.

so let's take a deep breath and return to normality.

I really think that f0dder and dk70 could have taken this opportunity to demonstrate more restraint and set a better example - come on guys, lead by example!  And Mastertech I would also ask you to try to express your opinions in a more respectfull way as well, even if you feel like someone is not correct in what they are saying.
