Personally I would go for the 1.7MB uncompressed version, because the 615KB version was compressed with UPX, which still can cause problems with some safety programs.

CrossGL's clock is really nice:

General Software Discussion / PdfMasher, fair priced Open Source
« Last post by Curt on September 10, 2011, 07:21 AM »
... the developer at hardcoded.net  is running in something he calls "Fairware":
http://open.hardcoded.net/

PdfMasher, http://www.hardcoded.net/pdfmasher/, could be worth a test:

PdfMasher is a tool to convert PDF articles (newspaper, academic) to MOBI or EPUB documents. Most ebook readers support PDF files natively, but it's often a real pain to read those documents because we don't have font size control over the document like we have with native ebooks. In many cases, we have to use the zooming feature and it's just a pain.

Another drawback of PDFs on ebook readers is that annotations are not supported.

...
PdfMasher asks the user about the role of each piece of text, and does it in an efficient
manner:

Your PDF has a header on each page and you don't want them to litter your text? Sort text elements by Y-position (thus grouping them all together), shift select the elements and flag them as ignored. They will not appear on your final HTML.

Your PDF has footnotes on many pages? Sort your elements by text content (thus grouping all elements with the text starting with a number together) and flag them as footnotes. They will be moved to the end of the document, and PdfMasher will try to create hyperlinks to footnote references.

...
PdfMasher does NOT preserve style and images. PDF is evil and just the task of extracting text from it while preserving the flow is daunting. I receive e-mails from people disappointed that their styling is lost in the process. Sorry, PdfMasher's focus is not on style preservation (hence the "masher" part of the name) and if it's something you need, PdfMasher is probably not for you.

Platforms:
Mac OS X: 10.6 and up (Snow Leopard or Lion).
Linux (32bit) Ubuntu 11.04 and Linux (64bit) Ubuntu 11.04
Windows XP/Vista/Win7

Although it's quite capable already, PdfMasher is still in early development.
Current Version: 0.6.2
Price: Fair

installs Microsoft Visual++ 2008 Redestrb.

The two videos are for older versions.

TEST-page: http://www.monde-diplomatique.fr/

PdfMasher's OCR must be good; almost all of the produced text was correct. The author is probably not working as a pedagogic trained teacher... the GUI and the procedures could be better layed out - quite a bit better. As an example, if you want to remove some text from the article, you'll have to mark the text block in question, and move the mouse to the other side of the program and click 'ignore', instead of merely pressing delete! This is far too slow a procedure, and made me tired of the program before time... But because I took the time to watch the videos and read about it all, it was easy to use the program and create an e-book. As an e-book the resulting file is very useful. The produced nag screen looks like a turn-off for freeware hunters.

Parts of this program are excellent. But as the author said: "Although it's quite capable already, PdfMasher is still in early development"; Program removed.

Incidentally, one thing I question in Revo.  The stuff you are deleting by hand (the extra registry entrys and paths) is in bold, but it looks like the program will let you delete more by putting the check in a higher level box. Personally, I think this higher level box should be grayed out, as it would be easy for a non-techie to delete more than they want.  Anybody else notice this ?  I should ask Revo.  (I never tested this.)

If it is the only program I have from that company, I click "Mark All", and delete the lot. It has never caused my any problems.

« Last post by Curt on September 09, 2011, 03:33 AM »
http://blogs.msdn.co...indows-explorer.aspx
-notice the last line:

Goals of the new Windows Explorer

We set out to accomplish three main goals with this new version of Explorer:

1)    Optimize Explorer for file management tasks. Return Explorer to its roots as an efficient file manager and expose some hidden gems, those file management commands already in Explorer that many customers might not even know exist.

2)    Create a streamlined command experience. Put the most used commands in the most prominent parts of the UI so they are easy to find, in places that make sense and are reliable. Organize the commands in predictable places and logical groupings according to context, and present relevant information right where you need it.

3)    Respect Explorer’s heritage. Maintain the power and richness of Explorer and bring back the most relevant and requested features from the Windows XP era when the current architecture and security model of Windows permits.

We evaluated several different UI command affordances including expanded versions of the Vista/Windows 7 command bar, Windows 95/Windows XP style toolbars and menus, several entirely new UI approaches, and the Office style ribbon. Of these, the ribbon approach offered benefits in line with our goals:

Provides the ability to put the most important commands in very prominent, front and center locations.

Makes it easy to find commands predictably and reliably. Every important file management command could be given a home in the ribbon, and customers would always know where to look for them.

Exposes a large set of commands (~200) in one easy and consistent experience and organizes commands into scenario-focused groups without the use of nested menus, popups, dialogs, and right-click menus.

Aids command identification with support for grouping, a variety of button sizes and icons, and aids deeper investigation with live previews and expanded tooltips.

Takes a similar approach to Office, Microsoft Paint, and Windows Live Essentials, which means that many of our customers will be familiar with the model and not have a lot to learn.

Provides a consistent, reliable UI that doesn’t degrade over time like traditional toolbar and menu-based user interfaces do. See Jensen’s earlier blog on this topic from the development of the ribbon.

These strengths fit well with our three goals – the ribbon would allow us to create an optimized file manager where commands would have reliable, logical locations in a streamlined experience. The flexibility of the ribbon with many icon options, tabs, flexible layout and groupings also ensured that we could respect Explorer’s heritage. We could present a rich set of commands without removing access to previously top-level commands, something we knew was really important to our customers.

As it so happens, while not primarily a touch interface, the ribbon also provides a much more reliable and usable touch-only interface than pull-down menus and context menus (we'll have lots more to say on the topic of touch, of course—as a reminder, check out this Windows 8 video--we definitely know there is a lot of interest but also want to make clear that we know how important keyboard and mouse scenarios are to power-user scenarios of file management).

General Software Discussion / Building Windows 8: I need longer arms!
« Last post by Curt on September 08, 2011, 05:14 PM »
From this video it seems to me that Microsoft wants me to touch my screen all of the time. Quotation from the end of this video: "This is the new version of Windows, it's gonna run on laptops, it's gonna run on desktops, PCs with ( ? ) keyboard, ... , it's gonna run on everything." As it is now, I can barely reach my monitor. I guess Windows 8 will make me need longer arms!!!

MainType 4 is on offer right now - $59 seems okay

----------
I was lucky to get Advanced Font Viewer 4.42 for free from Givewayoftheday. ... However, the new version 5 is $97, which is absurd. There surely must be something both better & cheaper! http://www.styopkin....ed_fonts_viewer.html
their website sure doesnt make it look like $97 worth (visually or with info) I think for that price you get a "professional" font manager like Suitcase/Suitcase Fusion

The price is now $39 with a lifetime license! But of course one might doubt the value of a lifetime license for a program that has not been updated for 3 years...

@rgdot - The Free and the Pro are two very different programs. The Free is really good, but cannot save you, if you install something evil. The Pro can, but it will use aeons of your time, because you have to let it scan during each and every install / update you make. I am too impatient for the Pro version.

I use skrommel's "ShortcutTip", so when I point at a shortcut, I get an accurate description of the program's features, copy&pasted from the program's homepage when I first downloaded the file. You already have them installed, so maybe you'll wear out just thinking about this.

https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=14168.0

:) Try this one!

ShortcutTip - Prompts for a description when a shortcut is created.

Features:
- It watches the Start menu and the Desktop.

You'll find the downloads and more info at 1 Hour Software by Skrommel.

Skrommel

I also used to use FileNotes from jamworkspro, but it has left the Net - at least I can't find it. I don't think it ever was updated for Vista.

Probably there are still people that will stay away from IObit’s software due to a previous issue with Malwarebytes because of their principles, but I personally won’t push away a good software. If it is good, I’ll publish it on my blog and use it on my computer. If it is bad, you probably won’t even read it from here…
