One of the few products Ashampoo have never offerered me (they offer me almost everything regularly including out of date versions and name your price). I finally unsubscribed to the emails having got sick of the constant deluge of offers for versions of software earlier than the ones I actually bought!

Depends on the application you are using - some apps are well behaved and allow you change the priority internally. For example TMPGEnc video software let's you chose priority when windows are active and when windows are not which is ideal because you can run at full pelt by clicking on the window title and let it pootle on idle cycles when you want to do something else. Some software you can change in Task Manager (I don't know why I always feel slightly wary imposing my choice by this method - esp. as MS pop up a windows warning that you may make your system unstable by doing so). Other software is bloody minded and does its own thing by resetting the priority even when you change it - these are ideal for confining to a single core and let the rest of the system use the other one.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is XP really that good?

All 32-bit versions of Windows have a 4Gb limit- but you have to deduct from that any memory mapped devices (such as graphics card memory). For example if you have graphics card with 1Gb of memory onboard you will not be able to use more than 3Gb of your memory (and there may be other memory mapped devices that force memory to be unused).

64-bit Windows doesn't have this restriction.

PS - Carol, I never even considered separating the processes by processor. I've never tried that. Does it work well?  Thanks!  Jim

Yes - You can assign an application to a particular CPU and then it runs on that CPU alone.

I have used this a number of times when doing long winded processes like video re-encoding and didn't want to tie up my system for a day. You do have to physically assign other intensive tasks to the other CPU to get the benefitand it doesn't overcome the problem of disk intensive activities slowig everything down (but in my case keeping different processes on different physical harddisks helps).
2905
If you have multiple CPUs you can assign different tasks to different CPUs in Windows XP - or is that not what you are talking about? You can also give Tasks priortity (at least in a coarse way Idle, Low, Normal, High and RealTime).

I seem to recall a utility that a certain cat fancier made available on here called Process Tamer too ...

Sorry I didn't mean to upset anyone - even if the company went bust in 2001 some one owns the domain name and must be paying to host the site. I can't see how hacking into the backend of a website can really be condoned unless it is your site and you have lost the login credentials.

General Software Discussion / Re: corrupted file after power disruption

I haven't looked in Vista but in XP if you go to Control Panel > Power Options there is an alarm tab which lets you set a battery level where an alarm is given and an action can be set.

You could set this so that at 10% battery life left it warns you and at 5% battery life it automatically hibernates.

That way if you are at the computer you can grab a power lead if it is to hand and if you have left it unattended it can look after itself!

Can't answer 1 or 2.

For 3 - why did the power fail?

If the battery has run out there is not much you can do except plugin the computer.

If it is a power failure to your power supply either make sure you have a charged battery installed or get a UPS so that even without mains power you have sufficient time to shut down your system (or use software to automatically shutdown cleanly on power failure).

How about installing a small XP or Vista 'backup server' install on your server machine - just install a consumer Windows version with Acronis to dual boot beside the server installation and then boot into XP to backup the server partition regularly. It doesn't solve automating backups but at least you could do it every day and it would only take 5 minutes if you keep increments up to date.

I don't see why the standard recovery CD shouldn't work as a fall back boot up for backup. I have never used the CD beyond a quick and dirty backup of a failing partition - does it support incremental and differential backups in the same way as the installed version?

I agree that a lot of these products are reasonable for workstations but are prohibitively expensive if you want a version to run on server editions of Windows. It's a shame they can't ditinguish between corporations and small home server type setups or small office networks. It is quite conceivable that a business with 3 or 4 employees would want to run a server but at that level most of the server products would be very expensive!

There are loads of examples of this issue Acronis and Perfect Disk are just two but quite a few AV products seem to make the distinction too.

With the release of a new batch of '2009' products is it time to start looking at Security Suites and standalone AV products again.

Personally I have had an interesting year. Having stated up a small business to fix people's computers locally (work is now picking up a bit as word of mouth spreads) one of the commonest problems is slow system performance and surprisingly less often actual infections.

My usual rule of thumb is dump Norton and install something lighter, use crap cleaner and a decent defragmenter regularly - and so far people have appreciated the speed gain.

I was reading a review today of the latest Norton Suite offering (see http://www.pcmag.com...,2817,2330018,00.asp) and it looks like Norton have started to listen to performance complaints. I am always a bit sceptical of PCMag reviews but looking around reducing the performance hit of previous versions does seem to have been a Norton priority. Add to that the 2009 suite seems to be getting good reviews from the point of view of sorting out virus and other malware.

Is it time to revisit Norton or do you plan to stay with your current provider?

The other site I have been looking at is http://www.av-comparatives.org/ which seems to employ useful selective methodologies to test aspects of performance rather than just a bland overall assessment.

This is something I am thinking about currently as NOD32 quietly tells me every day that my subscription is about to expire. Having been stung by a couple of infection issues this year I am beginning to wonder whether it is worth a change.

The other company that seems to get good performance credit (in terms of system performance hit and also product abilities) is AntiVir.

What does you think?

You can upgrade Acronis TrueImage to the corporate workstation version (TrueImage Echo Workstation) for a reasonable price (and it has the advantage that it actually works well).

You can also purchase a Universal Restore addon that helps deploy system images to machines with different hardware. I have used it and it seems to work fine now - there were some teething problems in the early days. You do have to read the guidelines on how to use it although you don't have to prepare images in any particular way just collect relevant resources for the new system and give the restore process access to them during the restoration onto a new machine.

With the corporate version you can also purchase a renewable annual maintenance contract (I have just renewed mine and it cost £12 (UK pounds) for 12 months). This includes priority support (and they do get back within a very short time - usually an hour or two) and access to all new versions. The latter isn't particularly special because the corporate version doesn't leap through the generations like the Home edition does (which is why it isn't generally full of bugs!)

The lesson I learned the hard way a long time ago is if you are going to do something that messes with partition tables backup your drives first!!

I learned the lesson but I don't always live by it and guess when things go wrong ....

I love it ;)

Serious related question now - my Canon Pixma ip5000 has recently started chewing paper when I ask it to duplex print. Anyone any idea how to clean the paper path on these as there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to disassemble the printer.

It isn't just free web-services either - what is to stop paid for services being sold and shut down? It has happened a lot to software titles - but at least you keep the version you have paid for - with a web service you get to keep nothing.

Living Room / Re: Experiences buying software on eBay?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on November 24, 2008, 03:31 PM »
After resent experiences I am wary of buying anything that can be counterfeited on eBay.

I posted elsewhere about my experience of a seller with ripped off videos. Despite reporting the issue to eBay they are still trading and I only got my money back after going to the police. Even so they are still trading.

Buyer protection from eBay/Paypal (take your pick they are the same people) is a joke and almost impossible to claim. Even when you report a trading violation they insist you try and sort it out with the seller (even when the seller is unambigously breaking the law). If it can't be resloved with the seller then iIn order to claim on the deal the onus is on you to prove to eBay that the trader was acting illegally. In my case they wanted me to PROVE that the item was counterfeit - I couldn't return it to them for examination and even though I got a letter confirming it is clearly a poor ripoff copy from a local magistrate (judge) eBay still would not accept that as evidence.

Note once you make a claim you only have 7 days to provide the evidence eBay require otherwise you are not covered by the protection scheme. This is not necessarily possible especially when you, as I did, get the email requesting the information on the Friday afternoon of a bank holiday weekend (ie. no one was available to even try to collect evidence for 3 of those days).

By all means buy second hand goods that are easy to verify that they work but avoid anything like Software, DVDs, CDs or Videos unless eBay is a shop front for an independently verifiable reputable shop.

I must admit I usually like to keep things clean and simple but I rather like GMAIL themes. I currently have the mountains adorning my screen - can't say I have noticed it being slower.
