Computer dinners are absolutely different from TV dinners!

One easy example is you need to be careful eating pizza because you will really regret getting pizza grease all over your mouse and/or keyboard!  :o

It's funny that the "magic date" is the 21st - so close to the holidays. It gives the politicians a few minutes to take a break from the serious stuff and give us stuff to giggle over.

But wait!  :o

The Mayans knew that 1600 years ago and carefully planned a fake announcement to be upon the wrong day in a desperate bid to save civilization!

And that's why we'll end happily ever after! The end!    ;D

Because the Mayans predicted old skool internet memes.

Borland C++ Builder Contest / Re: Trandesk Multiple Desktops
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on December 09, 2012, 07:31 AM »
Sorry for the Zombie Bump, but I have found a bug for some time now and today I decided to see if the dev was still around and interested in fixing it. (Plus this is in a bit of a strange section of categorization, I kept thinking it was a NANY item. p.s. there is only 1 s in Trandesk so I also kept mis-spelling it Transdesk.)

Hi Relipse, Trandesk is one of a batch of tools from here that I use every day.

However, when I switch between the colored desktops, it seems to shuffle the order of the windows (for example Firefox.)  My use case is batching instance-windows of Firefox in the order that a bunch of job listings on Monster show up. For example Window 1 on the taskbar would be results pages 1-3 with a bunch of tabs. Window 2 on the taskbar should be results pages 4-7, window 3 should be results pages 8-10, etc.

Except when I click back and forth blue to red to green etc, when I get back the windows are in a different order. Results 8-10, then Results 4-7, then results page 11, then the index page that was last, and then finally results 1-3.

Can you take a look?

Quick guess with no homework - the fact it uses Legos? Legos are square thingies, so maybe Lego Inc / whoever didn't make the custom parts needed to do 1-1.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) - Mini-Review

I used to use Norton some ... ten(?) years ago. A Bunch of free stuff in the middle. Come on, with the dev power MS had, you know they could have done it in like 1999, they politically chose not to.

So finally someone did some PR math and decided to do it in house, and it's not bad. Nothing is perfect, but ... not bad. 10 years too late, but whatever, that's how MS works.

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: is a program from 2010 really still 'new'?
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on December 08, 2012, 01:36 AM »
The word new was meant to convey not that the programs were recent but that they were newly created for the event.. I've changed it do custom to clear up any confusion.

Yay for Custom! Custom can be from any year! New Apps from 1957! New Apps for the New Millenium! NANM. It's like the New School - eventually the name grows old!  :o

Founded in 1919, so coming up (sorta) soon on its 100 year anniversary! Yay New!

My early grounding in formal English was also reinforced by the military.  One does not always equal 1, but one (1) does.

That just terrifies me.  :o

Social Media.

No one typed "+1" to a post before Google promoted it. Really. How do you take "Cody is a Minor Deity" and ... ADD A NUMBER to it?

Facebook is on the verge of patenting the word "Like". Some of us also don't like FaceBook. Some subset of you then decided that "any non-FaceBook shorthand method of agreement was good enough." Enter the +1. The original service is struggling. But +1 has invaded DC.

I'll admit there are some advantages. On the numeric keyboard if you're really fast you can slam the big plus key with your third finger, the 1 with your index, and the enter with your pinky.
+1
In under a second.

Half of this story is missing. How did "police discover" those materials on her phone?  Do relatives of terrorists have to submit their phones for police inspection!?

Also, we're getting into Thought Control Mad Libs pretty soon here.
Oh gawd, I might have a NANY idea! (Not formally pledging because my programming skills are at the 8 year old level but still.)

Sites often get these little chores that sorta slip by for ages. the main board "scraper" that collects the recent posts makes it obvious there's activity going on. I find it funny, not a reason to ditch the site.

Call me a liar. Tell me that I'm a crank/kook/nut/whatever.

Modern Media sez: "Yay, we Like this part! (Like us on Facebook!)"

But do look into it for yourself.

"Modern Media sez, "Aw $hit, this part takes work! Nah, let's go to the bar and go back to part 1, now armed with drinks!"

I didn't make it though a third before I dismissed it as stupid. I know, internet watcher and all, but they cherry picked a case where the subject stood there and screamed. (Have they never ever even seen a horror movie?! Don't you know you're supposed to fight the evil demon and die trying?)

Really?!

Renny's right about the danger, but to the ghost-model, no gun even needed. Pretty sure someone more aggressive would have tried tackling the "ghost" at which point they just go "cut, scene over, it's just a joke and you failed. Go away now. Here's some bunch of money for your time. Next!"

Kyrathaba, you're onto something, but a couple of features might make it even more useful. What if you had a "hate" option? Most people only really pick from the top half of their list right? So what if there was an "Accelerated Mode" where you click any number of items "that belong in the lower half of your list" (you can rescue one later.)

So on a 30 point list your program would be as exhausting as the real life version, but if you just click "I hate coffee, licorice, tomatoes, ratatouille, green & yellow peppers, onions, lima beans, escargot, pickled mangoes, anchovies, and blueberries", then you save a zillion comparisons.

Then you can decide if you like chicken more than steak, coke vs pepsi, tacos vs enchiladas, etc.

I have to cling to my theory that people aren't going all Mr. Burns "Ooh, if we dumb down the educational system then we can get rich with X, Y, and Z." Not *quite* that brutally direct.

Invoking my new fun term "Differently Evil", I think it's become more of a "Soft Science Scapeoat". To a point, (I know, fun exceptions abound), Math-Physics, Biology-Medicine, your choice of three other science pairs are "Hard Science", they basically "Just Work".

But something like Educational Theory gets all wishy-washy and only works in the aggregate and also only at about the Decade level. Unfortunately, Politics is all about micro-decisions where on VERY good days you have about a month tops to respond to something, and more often less than a week. So then someone gets in a snoot and wants to free up cash for something, and someone else wants a talking point, so they go all "yeah yeah let's cut education to pay for it!" Then of course it tends not to come back because when you restore it they go "you scumbag, you're taking away funding from __". Somehow, Think of the Children works ... until it's time to Think of the Children, at which point, having been used to try to sell SOPA, they get thrown back into the smelly fish barrel from my other post.

(Cynic)
Microsoft Clippy Sez:
"Hmm. You seem to think there's Justice prevailing. Do you know what a Folded Hand means?"

One huge problem I have with the current media structure is that it rewards faked short term news, both in Clicks for various schemes and longer public control. So despite big problems in the DotCom mess, one "folded hand" leads us to assume "Justice" is at work. But if you metaphorically equate such a saga like an entire *tournament* (of poker, for example, I haven't watched the blackjack ones), this is like one folded hand. So everyone screams in joy, but the player (US Gov-Corp Interests) simply folds a draw of a 3 and a 6 and waits for the next deal. It's not Justice. It's Drama. Justice means supposedly it will actually turn around. A Folded Hand means the player is playing the long stakes, and our media artificially rewards folded hands to the benefit of the Long Term Player.

Law: Oh god...
...
Patheticness: Hacker? God... It's called looking at EXIF data...

So wait, how many layers of recast blame are we looking at here?

Law: "Now remember, class, when we like you, we call you a Security Researcher. When we don't like that you showed us up but you helped us, we call you a Hacker. When we want to tap into the meme to scare the sheep into letting us pass new laws, we call you a Terrorist. So be nice, okay? You wouldn't want to be called a Terrorist. P.S. We need another $50 Billion for a new surveillance program."

Spot on! The Phoenix sums it up in just 51 words.

Take a bow T-Man!!! ;)

"Shit. You mean I miscounted? Well delete the word 'into' in the middle of '(into) the meme' then it's 50 words exactly, right?"   8)
