LaunchBar Commander / Re: Refresh takes a long time
« Last post by mouser on November 15, 2006, 07:46 PM »
sure - so your impression is that no matter which items you disable it still loads really slowly..
if you disable your main toolbar and create just one toolbar with like one button, does it still take so long to load?
i'm trying to get a clue for what could be causing such a delay.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Desktop Teleporter
« Last post by mouser on November 15, 2006, 08:45 AM »
great to hear that tchikien -
im sure we will all be able to come up with some feature requests too..

one thing i can think of is having it pop up when a new file is created on the desktop and ask user if they want to add datestamp + short comment to the file (like name of site it came from).
or maybe be able to quickly type in a note for the file which would be stored as FILENAME_note.text

another nice thing would be if it took your comment and wrote it out to a single "log" file, where it would list all files, the date which they were created, and your comment.  that would be nice for keep a record of what you downloaded.

This might be a must-visit site if there's no hidden catches..

Welcome to Giveaway of the day project, the new initiative in the software distribution world! Every day we offer for FREE licensed software you’d have to buy otherwise!

Our new initiative, Giveaway of the day, is finally open to its visitors and ready to present hot software titles and best software authors from all over the world. We wish you a Happy Giveaway!

Giveaway of the day is a win-win solution for both publishers and clients
The idea behind this initiative is that many sites and publishers offer trial downloads; but only we offer giveaway downloads. What does that mean?

Basically, every day we nominate one software title that will be a Giveaway title of that day. The software will be available for download for 24 hours (or more, if agreed by software publisher) and that software will be absolutely free. That means - not a trial, not a limited version - but a registered and legal version of the software will be free for our visitors*.

The software product will be presented in its full functionality, without any limitations save for those mentioned in Terms and Conditions.

The download link will remain on our web-site for the agreed period of time, together with the review of the software product and the information about other products from the software publisher presenting the giveaway title.

Both reviews and the information on the product line will remain active even when the Giveaway period is over.

i'm virtually certain this is the problem, and has to do with how lbc checks to verify file existence - i will speed it up.

lanux, can you check if your dock is set to "hide missing items"

if so, uncheck that and see if it fixes your speed problems.

General Software Discussion / What's your Favorite Recent Computer Game, and Why?
« Last post by mouser on November 14, 2006, 07:34 PM »
I think it's time for a thread on our favorite computer games..  Even those of us who don't play computer games very often, it can be a fun to take a little break.

So, what's your favorite computer game you've played in the last couple of years?

I like the GTA and Hitman series of games, but recently I tried out "Sniper Elite" which I'm really enjoying.  It's basically a first-person stealth/sniper game, and for those of you who enjoy the occasional sniper aspects of normal first person games, this will be heaven for you, all sniping, all the time.  Done really well and extremely satisfying.  Has an amazing slow motion bullet-cam effect too.  big thumbs up from me if you like this kind of game.

It seems to me this has to be viewed as good news to those of us who use the Borland developer tools, since it means that CodeGear will be more attentively focused on these tools and not distracted by the other stuff.

Borland Software Corporation (www.borland.com) today announced its decision to separate the Developer Tools Group into a wholly-owned subsidiary focused on maximizing developer productivity. The newly formed operation, CodeGear, will be responsible for advancing the four primary product lines formerly associated with Borland's Integrated Development Environment (IDE) business. These include Developer Studio (Delphi®, C++Builder® and C#Builder®), JBuilder® (including the upcoming Eclipse-based "Peloton" offering), Turbo® and Interbase.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Shutdown/restart/hibernate etc. ability?
« Last post by mouser on November 14, 2006, 01:09 AM »
the easiest way would be to install this freeware tool that can do tons of things through the commandline:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

then just have launchbar commander invoke the commands you want.

gives me an idea that i should create a default nircmd toolbar with predefined functions and buttons that you could drag and drop onto your own toolbars, etc.

Living Room / Re: 10 coolest alarm clocks
« Last post by mouser on November 13, 2006, 07:49 PM »
via http://www.newlaunches.com/ it turns out that a copy of the blowfly flying alarm clock is now available for purchase, cheap:

You'll have to get up when this little baby starts, because it takes off and flies round the room, making a really annoying noise like a mosquito,
so you'll have to find it first, before you can turn it off. Even if you hit the snooze button, it will take off again, so it will undoubtedly get you out of bed, though of course it might smash the place up a bit before you catch it, and if you sleep with the windows open you might find yourself running round the garden in your jimjams (no way to wake up) and may frighten the neighbourhood dogs.

There's also a slight danger that if you are a really heavy sleeper, and the things flies around the room without waking you up, eventually it will run out of juice, so it could wake you up by dropping on an exposed body part, such as the head, though I suppose you'd at least be awake. Or unconscious, possibly!

However it's a terrific fun item, and has already won a technology design award for its innovation and flair and makes a neat gift for anyone who has trouble getting out of the old pit in the mornings.

if my memory serves me correctly, and it rarely does, "reset after each" basically starts the text back to it's original after each language, so basically its the same as running the tranlsator several times, once for each language (rather than chaining a translation through them all).

One thing i would like clarification on is,
even when you exit the program the orbitnet.exe stays running in the background.

what exactly is it doing - what is its purpose?
28843
I'm glad you took the time to post and welcome to the site; thank you for clearing up the misunderstandings.

Just an update for everyone:

We take very seriously the responsibility for being a reliable source of information for people - and making sure that people never install a malicious program from some recommendation on our site.

We welcome authors to post about their programs (especially in this section), and we have endeavored to solve this issue definitively rather than leave it as an open and unresolved issue

Anyway, after several of us investigated the program, we then spoke to the author in the chat channel (thanks to Zero3k for arranging this), and I feel fairly confident saying that this is not a malicious or spyware program. I would feel comfortable installing this on my pc.  It's very unfortunate for them that they picked a name "orbit" that is shared with a known spyware program, which is causing some false alarms.

The authors seem to me like good people, and they are genuinely interested in writing a free downloading tool.

As I understand it are workong on a kind of peer-to-peer addon which might eventually connect to their server and show information from their site in their program, like news, or current files available on the network, etc.  This is not spyware or even adware, in my opinion.  It's the same thing itunes and many other programs do.  If you don't want this, don't use it, but it's nothing evil.  As long as they are not installing any toolbars or hijacking the browser or sending information about your surfing habits to the server, etc., then there is nothing malicious or harmfull about the program.

After some discussion, i do think the authors are going to make some changes to clarify things and make the connection stuff optional, which should help allieve some of the concerns people have had.  They've also concluded that they should not have been so crazy with all of the posts they've made recommending the program.. i think it's just a case of them still learning the unspoken rules of the internet.

I've invited the authors to stop by and post and say hello - so hopefully we will hear from them as well.

As always, it is a good idea to be cautious and be careful about installing software - but i want to also remind people not to jump to conclusions and state that programs are malware until you know for sure, because such rumours spread rapidly and can be hard to overcome if you are a developer and they are unfounded.
28845
yep, good point lanux, but this never seems to work for me on my pc with removeable drives, that's why i had to find the tweakui method.

ProcessTamer / Re: New User Process Tamer / some questions
« Last post by mouser on November 12, 2006, 02:08 PM »
your basic statements are correct.
however some clarification:
there should probably be a warning against setting anything to Realtime - this is an extremely high priority and it's hard to imagine cases where you should set anything to this level - it could make your other programs almost unresponsive and MS advises against using it.  there is little reason to run things realtime priority.

even high priority is probably unnesc, except maybe for cd burning apps on a slow pc.

most of the time its sufficient to run things at normal and low, reserving low priority for apps that eat too much cpu and make your pc unresponsive.

--

you could set those scanners to low priority (assuming they will stay low; some people have experienced situations where certain of the system level scanners dont seem to be amenable to priority changing).  but be careful that you dont change the priority to low of a resident on-access scanner, because that might have the effect of slowing down every file access i think..
28847
this is a fun idea..
it's a tiny bit similar to my TemporalityScreens coding snack (see bottom of this page: https://www.donation...er.com/CodingSnacks/)

i wonder if any existing screensaver makers do this - it is a nice idea.

mathias, your minesaver solver screensaver looks so fun - but i couldn't get it to work on my machine.
it starts the minesweeper (always in simple mode), and never plays it and just gives blank screen.
