Living Room / Dimension Shift: Art illustrating games in another dimension
« Last post by mouser on November 23, 2006, 09:15 PM »
Cool stuff.  He basically takes images from video games, and uses them in a 3d representation of some form..

The artwork that you see in my gallery has been created by a parse/render workflow system that has been - and continues to be - in continuous development (by yours truly) since April 2004.

My interest in creating three-dimensional representations of classic arcade, console and computer game characters sprung from a fairly fruitless web search for a retro-arcade-based desktop for my iMac. When I couldn't find anything to fit the bill I set about creating my own, using sprites grabbed from emulated screenshots of my favourite games. One problem....

Yikes!

We reported back in October that a phishing attack had hit MySpace, creating fake login forms that looked like the real thing. These appeared on 3000 profile pages, according to Mashable Labs. They worked by using MySpace’s popular html editing features (an essential part of the MySpace layouts craze) to display a login form - once you’d entered your login details, the creators could hijack your profile page, creating another fake login form and sending out spam bulletins. What’s more, we noted briefly that Firefox identified these as real MySpace login pages, and automatically filled in your details.

Now CNET and others are picking up on the story, pointing out that this is a major flaw with the Firefox Password Manager. The flaw affects both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7, but it’s being said that Firefox is more vulnerable. Firefox sees “http://www.myspace.com” in the address bar and assumes that the form is a genuine MySpace login page - it doesn’t check, however, where the login details are sent to once you submit them. But what’s even more worrying is that this can be done without a visible login form: a site can hide the login form from view, and have the details automatically submitted when you click a link. Mozilla are working on a fix, but for now the solution is not to use the Password Manager to remember your passwords.

Living Room / I'd like to express thanks to the DonationCoder.com community today
« Last post by mouser on November 23, 2006, 07:35 PM »
It's always important to step back and take a moment to reflect on what you should be thankfull for.  Sometimes it's easy to get lost in the moment and feel stressed out or on the losing side of a struggle to survive..

Today I find myself incredibly thankfull for the DonationCoder.com community of users, especially those of you who have participated in this forum, making it a better place.

It was almost 2 years ago that i was in a complete panic about the fact that i couldn't pay my bills and yet i found myself still unable to stop spending my time writing programs, and unwilling to enter into the world of selling software unable to handle traditional employment.

I still have a bit of trouble paying bills, but now when i am programming i feel like i am doing something productive - and that i'm part of something good, and honest, and fun.

This site has become my second home and it means so much to me.  I feel like I know all of you a little bit, and I am thankfull for the opportunity to participate in it, and thankfull that you guys+gals have made it possible to keep spending time on it and trying to improve it.

Thank you all for making this possible.

this is not too bad an idea, kind of fun really..

(microsoft does something like this when computing hardware identification codes that tries to detect when you have moved your operation system to another pc).

it has to be something REALLY simple for me to fix.  I'll try to fix or find it today..

Thank you for the nice words about Clipboard Help+Spell.  Keep in mind however that there are a lot of clipboard tools and youd be able to find another one you liked as well if you HAD to change (though as i said i surely can fix this issue quickly).

check your hotkeys in chs options to see if you have a common hotkey set to count characters.
try clearing it so no hotkey is set at all for count characters.

BuiltIt is free donationware by the way, so send the author a couple bucks if you use it.  My memory is that this tool started out specifically aimed at build automation (for programmers) but has grown more flexibile over time and can now be used to do a bunch of things..

Link Alert:

Screenshot - 11_21_2006 , 10_48_28 PM_thumb.png

This is a clever extension that basically changes your cursor whenever its over a link, to give you a visual indication of the link content.  Especially useful if you're like me and hate being surprised by clicking on a pdf file, etc.

Note that this doesn't change the appearance of links UNTIL you hover over them with your cursor.
A separate extension does that (TargetAlert, see below).

Highlights links to the following:
-New Windows, -Secure Sites, -Email Links, -Javascript, -Word Documents, -Excel Spreadsheets, -PDF Files, -Zip Files, -Applications, -Text Files, -Images, -RSS Feeds, -AIM: Links, -and more...

This is a clever extension that changes the links on a page to add small icons next to them that shows the nature of the link.  Especially useful if you're like me and hate being surprised by clicking on a pdf file, etc.

Note that this if you only want the links to show their nature when you hover over them, you should check out another extension (Link Alert, see above).

Provides a visual cue for the destination of a hyperlink by appending a link with an icon that shows what type of file it leads to, or the effects it may have, such as opening a new window or leaving a secure site. Icons can be set to appear only when mousing over a link (default), or they may be added to links automatically when the page loads. TargetAlert makes it easier to locate links to important document types while also providing warnings for links with undesired effects.

it might if it was a truly major new release that is first going public on jan 1; but if it's a "normal" update to a previously released program, it probably shouldn't count - however beautiful it might look

so do i understand that you are going to use another program to map a normal capslock press to some other function -

can you tell me after you try if it actually works, or if when taptap tries to send a caps lock on double left shift, if it doesnt also trigger your remap, if you understand what i mean.

I'd like to propose a little challenge here on DonationCoder.com..

The N.A.N.Y. Challenge:
New Apps for the New Year

UPDATE: All Nany programs (over 20 of them!) will be posted here at http://nany.donationcoder.com on January 1st, 2006

Ok here is my challenge to all of you with some coding skills.  Join me in pledging to release a new program/utility/game on JANUARY 1st, 2007 to celebrate the new year!

It doesn't matter how big it is, but it must go live to the public as freeware/donationware between Dec 31 and Jan 1st, 2007.

We will give out fun prizes (custom dc mugs celebrating the event or something like that), for all coders who live up to their pledges.

Ground rules:
  • You have to state you are participating well before the actual date (you shouldn't just wait until Dec 31 to reveal whether you decided to participate or not); ideally announce by posting a reply on this thread before dec 7, if possible.  DECEMBER 7 is our goal to have the pledges.
  • This can't be an update of an existing program - has to be a new program.
  • You can post the program on your own website, etc. - you don't have to be affiliated with DonationCoder.com - you still get to announce it as part of the N.A.N.Y. Challenge.

Ok, who's in for this fun challenge!?
