Post New Requests Here / Ideas wanted for a Cody Typing Flash Game
« Last post by mouser on November 28, 2006, 12:38 PM »
I'm a big fan of these typing-based games (see here).

I was thinking it might be fun to make a Cody (our mascot the bird) themed typing type game.

Can anyone think of any unusual/funny/crazy ideas for such a game? Something different and which didn't require too much artwork/animation?

i don't know, i like it - and it's not just because there are 3 DonationCoder.com apps on the list  :D

i know first hand from our reviews how darn hard it is to identify a single best utility.  and i think the way they are presented, like "i need a program to do x..." can be extremely helpfull - not only can you find what you are looking for but you learn about new ideas for doing things you hadn't thought about..

Seems this list is making the rounds again lately, and it's now up to 450!

Living Room / Re: Prediction: Google will Become Stumbleupon
« Last post by mouser on November 28, 2006, 10:12 AM »
I wanted to bump this because i want people to give me credit for predicting it when it happens.  ;)

I predict by 2008 google will have bought out stumbleupon or made a play to take over it's marketshare.

glad to hear i fixed that text font size error finally

as for #2 - one fix is to use redbox mode to capture regions.  it has pros and cons (select red box mode for region capture in options).

as for #1 - i will look into it.

Official Announcements / Winner of Veign's Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite Announced
« Last post by mouser on November 28, 2006, 09:35 AM »
We are very happy to announce the winner of the incredible Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite Giveaway, generously donated by Chris Hanscom from Veign.com (worth over $10k).

beachs.png

The prize is going to Chaim Krause (aka Tinjaw here on the forums).
Congratulations !!!

(now make us proud and actually use it to produce some good software)

Because of the unusual nature of this prize we worked hard to try to get it into the hands of someone we thought would put it to real use.  We started by identifying a small set of people who we thought would make good use of it, based on their detailed entry submissions. And then we basically just picked a winner at random from those top contenders.  It was the fairest way we could think of to try to avoid just giving it out purely at random to someone who would not actually benefit from it.

Now if you didn't win.. Don't feel bad just yet, because you're not going to believe this but Chris has decided to give way his second copy of this as well!!!!

That's right, you heard correctly.. We are going to be giving away ANOTHER Vistual Studio Team Suite in the next 2 weeks!

I read Lambda the Ultimate regularly - though it's a bit too much on theory for me to follow it in detail.  But I definitely appreciate the site and hope it continnues.

The Future of LtU
Recently the homepage is almost dead, and the discussions about important papers that are mentioned on the home page almost non-existent.

I am sad to say that if this continues LtU will fade away - something I am sure none of us wants.

This is a cry for help. If you are an editor, please try to post news you come across that might interest the LtU community. Take part in the discussions (you don't have to participate in all of them! participating in discussions on "static typing" is optional...) If you are an editor, are reading LtU, but haven't posted in a long time, don't feel you have become an outsider. You are still part of the team, and I for one am interested in what you might want to share. I know some long time editors got discouraged for various reasons -- I think now is a good time to return and reshape things to what they used to be.

If you are a regular reader and participate in the forum regularly, if you think you understand the spirit of LtU, how about signing up to become an editor? The process is simple (basically, you have to email me and that's it).

Many of you have personal blogs, and they are great resources. I still think the LtU community effort had an additional value it'd be a shame to lose. If you agree - post!

Finally, if you are a programming language scholar, and are reading and enjoying LtU - how about signing up to be a guest blogger?

russel are you sure its not just your image viewer showing them at 50%?
i dont see any way that it could be reducing image size by 50% when copying to clipboard.  can you tell me the procedure you're using to copy to clipboard and then view the clipboard contents?

i will check into the temp file issue.

Well, i understand what you are saying, but i still think it always pays to make an attempt to explain your position in a clear and calm way, for those people with an open mind.

And for the record, as I've stated before, I really *do* respect their interest in defending the idea of freeware, and can see why they would be very sensitive to the slippery slope of the term freeware being applied to things that they don't feel are free in a pure sense.  I do think it's a debate worth having - but maybe that's just because i think it's always worth while to debate the meaning of words. :)

There's another controversial post about donationcoder.com on alt.comp.freeware newsgroup again;
i've already replied to it in case you are curious:

Read the alt.comp.freeware thread..

> DonationCoder is just more up-front about encouraging you to donate, but
> still allows you to use the software for free if you really want to.
To say that "DonationCoder is just more up-front about encouraging you
to donate" qualifies as one of the top ten understatements of the year
that I've seen in ACF.
...

If you want to add your thoughts (and i welcome that), please remember to be courteous and considerate and respectfull and reasonable, etc., so readers know the spirit of this site and how we keep things friendly and respectfull.
