Find And Run Robot / Re: Bug: Number keys always trigger a choice
« Last post by mouser on November 30, 2006, 08:01 AM »
very simple fix, go to Interface tab of options, and uncheck "Digit keys launch results from search window".

Then make sure in lower right you have either ctrl # or alt # launch the apps.  this is what i do, i use alt+# to launch my apps, which frees up the number keys for real use.

UrlSnooper / ALPHA-BETA Test version for Windows VISTA
« Last post by mouser on November 30, 2006, 05:22 AM »
If anyone has vista running, here's a test version of url snooper:

https://www.donation...Alpha/URLSnooper.exe

If you have vista and use url snooper i'd appreciate a report.  I had mixed results.  This version won't crash the way the old version will on Vista, but i had some issues with it populating the list of network adapters at one point in a vmware machine..

Developer's Corner / New Digg-Like Site For Game Development Stories
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2006, 06:17 PM »
New digg-like site for game development stories:

devbump is a web application that allows you to submit an article that will be reviewed by all and will be promoted, based on popularity, to the main page. When a user submits a news article it will be placed in the "bumped" area until it gains sufficient votes to be promoted to the main page. The code for devbump is a modified version of the original source for Pligg whose original source was authored by Ricardo Galli. He was influenced by the extremely popular English technology site digg.com.

Living Room / Building a Quiet PC
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2006, 06:13 PM »
nice article on building a quiet pc:

We've all seen plenty of reviews of those big CPU coolers that promise to keep your processor chilly while reducing noise. Big, slow-moving fans are good at that. There are other parts of your system that can make a lot of noise, though. That graphics card can get loud when it spins up. The hard drive and optical drive vibrate the case during heavy use. If there's a fan on your motherboard chipset, it can sometimes be the worst offender: That small fan often spins at a really high speed, emitting a loud high-pitch sound. Of course, your case fans matter, too. An often overlooked part of the noise equation in a high-end PC is the power supply.
Rather than looking at all the ways one can build a super-quiet PC, we decided to focus on the case and power supply. We'll take a fairly typical high-end system and put it into a good-quality enthusiast case, and then see if some case modifications can drop the decibel levels a bit. The idea is not to replace all the cooling with new equipment, but to see if sound dampening material, rubber grommets, and quieter power supplies really make a difference.

Nice long review of Expert Mouse:
http://www.atpm.com/...5/expert-mouse.shtml

Let’s get one thing out of the way: the Expert Mouse is the epitome of all things trackball. It’s the latest offspring of the original trackball mouse. If you’re a trackball-hater, approach this review with an open mind. Don’t hate the player. Hate the game—and Kensington’s game is not to be hated lightly.

And it gets good amazon.com customer reviews:

Screenshot Captor / Commentary on ScreenshotCaptor - 2.28.01

v2.28.05 uploaded, with minor tweaks to the 2.28 series.
i'm very happy with the new SendTo emailing menu - anyone using it yet?  Did you know you can send multiple screenshots in one operation?  You can also switch between smtp or mapi mode, depending on whether you want to use your standard email client or the mailer built-in to sc.  Would be happy to hear some feedback on it.

someone else had my idea of a dual trackball as well:
http://www.squub.com.../of-balls-and-wrists

While researching these things I've decided what would REALLY be cool is a trackball with two balls; one under the fingers, and another under the thumb. One would function like a scroll wheel (except scrolling up/down and side to side,) and the other as a traditional cursor controller. Then a slew of easily accessible programmable buttons. Somebody get on that.

Developer's Corner / Cognitive Seduction and the "peekaboo" law - Nice Blog Essay
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2006, 03:56 AM »
Nice essay riffing on a recent Scientific American neuroscience article called The Neurology of Aesthetics.

Brains are turned on by puzzles. Brains are turned on by figuring things out. Brains are turned on by even the smallest "aha" moments. And despite what some of you (*cough* men *cough*) might believe, the brain is more turned on by seeing just the arms of a naked woman behind a shower curtain than it is by seeing all of her. So if you're trying to engage someone's brain, don't show everything. Let their brain connect the dots.
...
Whether you're trying to get someone's attention, keep their attention, motivate them to stick with something, or help them to learn more deeply and retain what they've learned, leave something for their brain to resolve. Do something to turn their brain on.

that is fascinating regarding ultramon, especially since i also use ultramon!
what versoin # of ultramon do you have? i have 2.6.23.

maybe its one of the options?
do you have ultramon adding icons to your windows? maybe try messing with the options.  ultramon also lets you set exceptions for windows - that might solve it :)

question:

does redbox capture display the same behavior no matter what monitor you are on when you trigger the hotkey?

i.e. is it always visible on CURRENT monitor, or always visible on a specific monitor.

also: what operating system are you using?

Post New Requests Here / Ideas wanted for a Cody Typing Flash Game
« Last post by mouser on November 28, 2006, 12:38 PM »
I'm a big fan of these typing-based games (see here).

I was thinking it might be fun to make a Cody (our mascot the bird) themed typing type game.

Can anyone think of any unusual/funny/crazy ideas for such a game? Something different and which didn't require too much artwork/animation?

i don't know, i like it - and it's not just because there are 3 DonationCoder.com apps on the list  :D

i know first hand from our reviews how darn hard it is to identify a single best utility.  and i think the way they are presented, like "i need a program to do x..." can be extremely helpfull - not only can you find what you are looking for but you learn about new ideas for doing things you hadn't thought about..
