LaunchBar Commander / Re: bug - tiny but a bug
« Last post by mouser on December 03, 2006, 06:51 AM »
Hi Curt -
i don't think that bug is related to Launchbar Commander - it's not a launchbar commander hotkey that i can remember; it sounds like a a clipboard tool of some sort.

UrlSnooper / Re: Sniffing, but can't smell
« Last post by mouser on December 03, 2006, 05:33 AM »
well the fact that you said it found some urls once suggests that it's working.

let me just walk you through a test to make sure you're using it correctly, etc.

Start URL Snooper.
Go to Advancd mode, and set your network adapter manually in the General Options tab.
Now go back to Search tab, and check that your "Keyword Filter" edit box and "Also Search For" edit boxes are empty.
Set your Protocol Filter to "Show All", which should show you all urls found (not just streaming media ones).
Now click "Sniff Network" button.
Now the program is watching for network traffic.

Ok now GO TO YOUR WEB BROWSER (like firefox or internet explorer), and open up http://www.cspan.org
NOTE: do this in your normal WEB BROWSER, not using the built in "Manually scan a url" box.

If the program is working correctly, when the cspan page loads, you should see a couple hundred urls shown in the url snooper results list.

Some people don't realize that you have to visit the page in your browser while url snopper is running.
Let me know how that works with you.

it's interesting to read so much agreement that v4 (and really every new release they've made) is buggy.  they seem to have some quality control issues.  i am alsos till using v3 and it seems quite stable and good to me - but clearly they need to do something to fix their approach.

Developer's Corner / An Entrepreneur's Take on "The Long Tail"
« Last post by mouser on December 02, 2006, 10:19 AM »
Yaro Starak writes an interesting blog on entrepeneurial business issues, marketing, small business stuff, etc.

Today he wrote a long piece on "The Long Tail", a very influencial article that became a book.

We've discussed the idea of the "Long Tail" before on the donationcoder.com forum, and if you are already familiar with the concept, you might not learn much new.  But if you aren't familiar with the concept, this blog is as good a place to start as any.

The Long Tail is the transition from a hit-focused marketplace to a millions of niches marketplace. While the majority of profits previously were made by selling a handful of products (the hits) to a lot of people, now millions of products are being sold to smaller amounts of people based on niches.

Similarly useful blog from people running DelphiFeeds.com: http://software.gurock.com/
28659
DelphiFeeds.com is a great site for getting your daily news about delphi and delphi-related tools and software.

DelphiFeeds.com is a side project from Tobias and Dennis Gurock (our blog: software.gurock.com). This site has been developed as an internal project for the Gurock Software intranet. We decided to make it public when we noticed how useful such a site would be for the Delphi community. Although this site originated from Gurock Software, this site is purely a private project of us and is not provided by Gurock Software.

This site collects many different feeds from blogs, newsgroups and other Delphi sites. We then publish short excerpts from the postings or articles on the DelphiFeeds.com front page. The whole process is automated and we cannot review every single posting that is added to this site. We try to include quality blogs and sites only so that the signal/noise ratio should be good. If we notice that a blog mostly contains off topic postings or offensive content, we will consider removing the site in question.

UrlSnooper / Re: Feature removed from URLSnooper?
« Last post by mouser on December 02, 2006, 04:48 AM »
i just went and checked.. hehe i guess i did remove that feature; figured people would use something else if they really cared.. but actually now that we have advanced vs. simple modes, i don't mind putting it back in advanced mode :)

i have a new version i'm currently beta testing for vista compatibility, so it will be back soon when that next version is released.

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: Folders in Drag and Drop??
« Last post by mouser on December 01, 2006, 04:37 PM »
you can see why i made it easier to run perl and other language scripts from d+d, because its common that we want to launch a small script on each entry, like the kind you are doing.

i understand what you are trying to do;
here is my memory and 2 possible solutions.

1) i think you might be able to do:
cd C:\Scripts\Bb\fixes_drapdroprobot.bat

which basically SHOULD mean, switch to the dropped folder directory and then run the script.

2) a cleaner more general solution would simply be to make a batch file or script which looks like:
cd "%1"
run C:\Scripts\Bb\fixes_drapdroprobot.bat

something like that.

in other words, d+d isnt great at running built in shell commands, so instead put them in a bat file and run the bat file, and let the bat file do the cd.

d+d is very happy to have folders dropped on it and to process folders, you just have to make sure you've checked the right option on the far right.

ps.
I actually have an updated version of D+D robot that i need to upload, with better support for running scripts and stuff (old version complained if you tried to run a non exe/bat script like perl, etc.)

Official Announcements / Re: THE N.A.N.Y. CHALLENGE - New Apps For the New Year
« Last post by mouser on December 01, 2006, 07:46 AM »
1. the last two apps i wrote were during work hours for work tasks, so the intellectual property belongs to work and we have patented them

Keep in mind that for this challenge we are not asking for any exclusivity or intellectual property rights. in fact we never have for any of our contests or challenges - this site is not trying to own the rights for anyone's hard work!  you write it, you own it!

It's just more of an attempt to get a bunch of people to release some brand new freeware/donationware all at the same time on Jan 1, 2007, and *announce* it as part of N.A.N.Y. project.  You could even still keep the software on your own website, with just links back and forth.

But you might be saying that you can't make your programs available free to the public, which is a different matter of course.

I'm sure people here can help brainstorm some new good ideas (or chat in the irc channel to think up some).

Living Room / Nice New Blog by DC member on "Social Computation and Creativity"
« Last post by mouser on November 30, 2006, 10:29 AM »
DC member alex3f, is a good friend of mine from University, and was one of the very first people on the planet to explore the use of collective intelligence on the web (he's published extensively on the field of Human Based Genetic Algorithms, see www.3form.com).

He's just started a blog on some of these issues and he's off to a promising start.  His second post is on the closing of the Google Answers service.  Definitely worth a read if you are interested in social computation and collective intelligence algorithms and architectures.

...
In my opinion, late Google Answers was a very interesting experiment combining fee-based and free Q&A services together. To my knowledge it was the first attempt to combine them. However, paid researchers had to compete with free answerers in answering questions. This created unsatisfaction among researchers and they start to publicly criticize the service.
