you can drag the diagram around with the mouse - maybe you just dragged it too far past any data?

Raymond Chen announced today a new book on Windows coding.  His blog is a consistently fascinating read filled with history and insight into details of Windows internals that few people know as well.

Why does Windows work the way it does? Why is Shut Down on the Start menu? (And why is there a Start menu?) Why do we need dialog loops, and why are they structured as they are? Why are the rules for programming GetWindowText so odd? Why are registry files called "hives"?

Many of Windows' quirks have perfectly logical causes, rooted in history. Understand them, and you'll be a more productive, less frustrated developer (and user!). Now, Raymond Chen--who's spent over a decade on Microsoft's Windows development team--reveals the "hidden Windows" you need to know. Chen's engaging style, deep insight, and gentle humor have made him one of the world's premier technology bloggers. Here he brings together behind-the-scenes explanations, invaluable technical information, and fascinating anecdotes that bring Windows to life--and help you make the most of it.

Chen shows you:
What vending machines can teach you about effective user interfaces
All you ever wanted to know about window and dialog management
Why performance optimization can be so counterintuitive
An under-the-hood look at COM and the Visual C++ compiler
Backwards compatibility: What Windows does, and what you need to do
Windows program security holes most developers don't know about

C++ remains the archetypal "high level" computer language (that is, one that preserves the features of natural, human language), and it is still used by millions of programmers. Many of the systems and applications of the PC and Internet eras were written in C++. For all that, the language remains controversial, largely because it is notoriously difficult to learn and use, and also because Stroustrup's design allows developers to make serious programming mistakes in the interest of preserving their freedom.

Nice blog on personal growth, updated frequently.

Goals and motivation were some of my major focuses, but after achieving a fairly high level of vertical growth and control over myself I have begun to radically shift my focus towards interpersonal development and lateral growth. This website will evolve as I do, marking my thoughts and insights for where I am and where I am growing.
While you may not have the same obsessive passion for personal development that I do, I hope that what knowledge and enthusiasm I can share from my own research and personal experiences can help you make steps towards making your life the best it can be.

Living Room / Blog Piece: Trend Watch: P2P Traffic Much Bigger Than Web Traffic
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2006, 12:34 PM »
Interesting blog post on readwriteweb.com, on a presentation at the Web2.0 Submmit.

While looking through Mary Meeker's 2006 Web 2.0 Summit presentation, I was struck by the figures on page 19: "Peer-to-Peer (P2P) traffic was 60% (and rising) of Internet traffic in 2004, with BitTorrent accounting for 30% of traffic, per CacheLogic". You can definitely see why this is the case, as P2P is normally used to download very large media files - music, movies, etc. But still it makes you realise just how big P2P currently is on the Internet and, given the increasing amount of video coming onto the Web, how crucial it is going forward.

I'm a big fan of the new Borland Turbo line; if you are thinking of doing MS Windows GUI development, you should absolutely give the free versions a try and see if it's something you like.

I find few that the Rapid Application Development stuff in Borland's tools is a great way to brainstorm.

If you decide to really use the tools - you will probably want to upgrade to the pro version, because only the pro version let's you install 3rd party components, which to me is the nicest aspect of delphi/c++ builder.

ps. I wonder if even people who don't reall consider themselves coders might consider using the free version just as a graphic user interface sketch system, without ever writing any back-end code.  Be a nice way to design a mock up interface as a way of explaining what you want to a coder..

LaunchBar Commander / Re: suggestion: More docking options
« Last post by mouser on December 07, 2006, 09:34 AM »
i like these general ideas - i think it makes sense to add a hotkey or menu item that would let you quickly show a launch bar just to launch something and then close up again to tray..

this is like find+run robot - again another argument for combining them i guess..

fixed; thank you

Don't put off your projects too close to deadline - if you're anything like me it will take you 10x longer to finish your program than you think it will in your mind.

Maybe we need some teasers..

My program is called "PHORP"

ps. actually that's just the acronym for it  :P

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Prevx1
« Last post by mouser on December 06, 2006, 06:31 PM »
You can find Prevx1 at http://www.prevx.com/ . Detection is always free, protection and cleanup is on a 30 day trial that doesn't start until Prevx1 actually detects malware (if a false positive starts the trial prematurely then just write to support and we can fix the false positive and reset the trial).

Nice approach, seems very reasonable

General Review Discussion / Re: Review Templates

that's why i made the "My Personal Area" section of the forum (at bottom of section list on main forum page):
https://www.donation...index.php?board=55.0

only you (and admin) can read the posts you make there, so it's perfect for writing a draft and modifying it over time until you get it just like you want it before you make the real post.  :)

Our very own Chris Hanscom (veign) has been blogging away like a mad man lately, and I just noticed his entry praising this open source content management tool for faqs and other hierarchical information called KnowledgebasePublisher. Really looks sweet.

KnowledgebasePublisher is an opensource knowledge base software, FAQ software, or just content manager about any other type of article that you want to publish on your website. It's so easy to use that you can be managing knowledgebase on your website right from your own web browser.

The KnowledgebasePublisher allows a content administrator in your company to easily add/edit/delete and post current information to your website at any time, day or night.

I'm not sure I really get the point of serializing these books (means you get a new chapter each week), but they are free and I really like the idea that they run on donations and share donations with authors..

Podiobooks is a term coined by Evo Terra of The Dragon Page and Slice of Scifi to describe serialized audio books which are made available in podcast format. Subscribers to the podcast feed for each book will receive a new chapter each and every week. Some listeners keep it on their computers, some transfer the book to CD, but most (hopefully) transfer the file on to their mp3 player so they can listen no matter where they are.

All the books you'll find on podiobooks.com are provided by the authors to you for free. Many authors do this to get exposure for their work, others do it in the hopes you'll buy their next work in development. Still others simply do it for the sheer joy of writing. And while it's not required, you have the option to donate money to the author of your choice. When you consider that audio books run usually 50% more than their hardcover counterparts... we hope you'll be generous. Authors receive 75% of all the proceeds from the donations from listeners. The smaller portion goes to the maintenance and upkeep of podiobooks.com.

General Software Discussion / musikCube 1.0 Final Released
« Last post by mouser on December 04, 2006, 11:47 PM »
musikCube is an open source grid-centric media player that has received a lot of attention on the DonationCoder.com forums and is a fantasticly clean program designed for those who prefer clean organization above exotic skins.

musikCube is an mp3 player for the modern generation. It helps you just listen to what you want to hear, while offering innovative features not seen elsewhere. For the technical user, musikCube is based on an embedded SQL database engine known as sqlite. For the non technical user, that means its fast. Really fast. "Dynamic playlists" allow fully automatic, randomized playback of songs based on your observed listening habits. The more you listen, the smarter it gets. It also features browsable, user reorderable playlists.

Cube also makes transferring audio between home and work very easy with it's unique support for removable storage devices. A "removable storage device" is any flash memory, thumb drive, or portable mp3 player that acts as a hard disk when you plug it in.
