N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Teaser: Crush MCP (Master Control Program)

English is not the global language, Chinese is.
Not yet, and hopefully (though perhaps not realistically) my time on this ball of dirt will be gone before it is.

English isn't a perfect language, with all the odd little exceptions it has... but it's still the language that will let you reach the widest possible amount of users. Unless you're writing very national software, it's arrogant to release in anything but English.

Tuxman: German might be the national language in a lot of countries, and both Spanish and Chinese and probably Russian are bigger national languages than English... still, English is (and should!) be the global language simply because it's the biggest when you take non-primary language into account.

That, and the fact that it's not as ugly as French or German, and doesn't require the use of non-ASCII characters ;) (well, modern English doesn't).

Anyway, this is going slightly OT :P

German text?
I can perfectly live with that.  8)
Too bad die drittes reich failed, leaving English as the great uniting language ;)

You can also open a file in a viewer without actually viewing.  8)
I was referring to things like SED, not closing my eyes ;)

When you have a repository notes mode ala WriteMonkey, is that viewing or editing?
An editor is always a viewer, but not the other way.
Not necessarily - you can edit files blindly without viewing. But that is a bit of a pedantic stretch ;)

It works here...

But ugh, what's with...
  • Themed looks?
  • German text?
  • Draggable menu- and toolbar?
  • Editor-style status bar?

I know this is stuff you get pretty much for free with MFC, but that doesn't make it any less ugly nor superfluous :)

Works fine on my Win7-64bit, on my XP-SP3 vmware it starts with no errors but no text either (I haven't installed VS2008 runtimes there afaik, dunno if it's included with SP3?). Time to check API call return values for errors :P

On the other hand, a game release that late won't have the time to make much of an impact in 2009, so in a way I guess it's fair enough? As long as it has a chance to get on the 2010 list...

What does 0-day mean?
"Breaking news".

In the exploit world, it's stuff that isn't generally known yet, and thus hasn't been patched by the vendor(s).

Editing a file means making changes to it - making annotations (even if it's in some external store) is a bit of a gray area, but the rest of your examples don't imply "edit" as far as I'm concerned; you might change the view but you're not changing the model.

I think I ran across KiTTy a while ago, but didn't find it's added features that useful - what I primarily like about puttytray is URL linkification (useful when running screen+irssi) and minimize-to-tray. Too bad it doesn't add tab support :)

Changes from back then:

Opera has been replaced by FireFox.
xplorer2 lite has been replaced with registered version.
WinDirStat has been replaced with SpaceSniffer.
ACDSee has been replaced with XnView (which has a few annoying bugs, but is generally pretty decent).
Daemon-Tools has been replaced with Virtual CloneDrive.
Instead of vanilla PuTTy I use PuTTY tray :)

UltraISO, TrID, PEiD, OllyDbg, Spyware S&D, AdAware (eww!), CrapCleaner (why bother) are hardly used anymore. The rest of the items from the 2005 list are still pieces of software I love, and most of them must-haves as well...

The remaining items from the old list are:

Foxit Reader - small and fast PDF viewer
Notepad++ - free+fast+opensource programmer's text editor, supports plugins

WinRAR - IMHO simply the best archiving tool, with great commandline options
Screenshot Captor - need I say more? :)

PuTTY and related tools - SSH client and more, for connectivity with my linux box
WinSCP (secure copy) - graphical SFTP/SCP client, again for linux connectivity
SubVersion - great source/version control software

SysInternals tools - especially pstools and Process Explorer. "pskill iexplore" is useful if you enter one of those a-zillion-popups websites.
WinSpy++ - spy on windows classes etc. (I also use their lightweight hexeditor)

Added to the list are...

Switcher - exposé clone for Vista and later, which works wonders when switching between lots of apps on multiple monitors.
clipx - the best clipboard history manager I've found so far.
FARR - I didn't use FARR in 2005? Shame on me!
Thunderbird - for emails.
Sunbird - for remembering dates & events.
Pidgin - for instant messaging (even if it's somewhat bloated and has a few bugs).
fSekrit - for snippets of privacy (and shameless self promotion).
TrueCrypt - for large amounts of privacy.
Beyond Compare - for figuring out changes, directory trees as well as file contents.
ImgBurn - for all my cd/dvd burning needs.
Exact Audio Copy - for digitizing my music collection (AccurateRip :-*). Wonder why EAC wasn't on my 2005 list, definitely used it back then.
Console - for running multiple consoles/shells in a single tabbed app. Nice when doing development, but unfortunately somewhat buggy and doesn't always handle "fullscreen" console apps well.
foobar2000 - music player of choice. Switched because musikCube doesn't handle .cue sheets.
RegexBuddy - saves time when designing regular expressions.
Website Watcher - for tracking blogs and software updates.
TortoiseSVN - explorer extension for subversion. Has useful commit dialog and decent diffing between revisions.

This is all software I use on a regular basis, much of it on a daily base. Somewhat is a bit specialized, but I've tried confining the list to stuff that's useful for "power users"... it could have been fairly longer if I included development tools as well.

Operating system is 64bit Windows 7 on my workstation and 64bit Windows Vista Business on my laptop.

Yea, Wolfenstein 3D was definitely a time sink for me back in the day. I'd still play it today if a new one were around.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Or perhaps the almost-brand-new Wolfenstein? :)

Too bad Duke Nukem Forever went belly-up... pretty hard imagining anybody else daring pick up the DN title anytime soon. When Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project was released I was all psyched because I thought it was DNF, and got "kinda" disappointed when I figured out it wasn't... was a pretty nice platformer, though.

40hz: my gripe against multibooting isn't making it work (pretty easy, just install OSes in the right order ;)), but that it's so damn inconvenient having to do all the partitioning (and reserving space!) and, mostly, all the reboots. VMs are so much more convenient.

Sharing HOME between distros sounds a bit dangeorus... don't you risk .config files being clobbered?

phpBB, it's had too many exploits.
phpBB 3 doesn't have too many of them. milw0rm.com lists a few for SMF, too, so what?
[/quote]Asmcommunity was hacked several times while running phpBB (albeit v2, iirc). SMF have had a few exploits, but I've seen it abused a lot less... and have had better user experience with SMF (especially the modded one DC is running :)) than phpBB.

Multi-booting sucks - virtualization to find something that fits your needs is much nicer, but of course virtualized won't run as smooth as on real hardware. So start by judging on features and user friendliness/whatever, not performance.

Stay away from phpBB, it's had too many exploits.

SMF is what DonationCoder and AsmCommunity runs, and it's pretty flexible and seems to have had less exploits than phpBB... at least I can't remember us being hacked at asmcommunity since we switched to SMF. And yes, you can integrate the geshi syntax highlighter with SMF, go talk to mouser :)

Code: C++ [Select]
  1. #include <stdio.h>
  2. int main()
  3. {
  4.   puts("color me pretty!");
  5.   return 0;
  6. }

The p2v and v2p features of ShadowProtect sound very useful to me, if they work properly - it would be so nice being able to tweak a system setup in a virtual machine, and then restore to real hardware... so personally I'd wait for the ShadowProtect discount.

Guess I should testdrive it first, though... unfortunately, I'm a bit strapped for time before exams in January.

It's a simple matter of right-click->Quick Mount and then double-click the ISO to access the files via Explorer/DOpus.  Applications can directly access the files in the ISO but will have to save any changes to somewhere else, (as is the case for a real CD/DVD ROM).
Are you 100% sure it doesn't either extract the files temporarily from the ISO, or actually does install a driver?
