RJ, I'm at a disadvantage, since I'm neither on a networked computer nor can I imagine why a rename utility would need to override permissions on a network. Virtually every corporation/company I've ever worked for severely restricts what users can see and do these days. Also, I don't understand what the TinyApps blog entry quote is trying to say with regard to file rename utilities. Help me out. Finally, any idea if there are other utilities exist other than 1-4a and Lupas Rename that can do what you say?

Let us know, thanks!

Excellent! I've asked patteo to consider filtering out the best renamers with regard to command-line utility, and maybe allen, et al. can help sort the best of the RegEx renamers. I know some renamers "claim" RegEx abilities, but I've no idea if they deliver on them, nor would I know if they did.

I won't pretend to know more than I do, but in the search for the best, we should make sure we don't miss a powerhouse! :-)

Thanks guys, I really appreciate these suggestions. I can't wait to dig into these. When you take 20-30 programs and start using them next to one another, you'd be surprised how quickly the cream rises to the top. More than a few developers have written renamers for their own needs rather than for mass consumption, you several of you point out.

However, I will point out that I know very little about regular expressions and command-line utilities. While these will be noted, those naturally fall into a sub-category that might merit a second, more detailed review of these only. This review will focus mainly on the best GUI file renamer not excluding command-line, text, and RegEx abilities. If the scope is not somehow limited, then the review begins to make unfair or misaligned comparisons. Right now, I want to look at everything that's good, not just every renamer available. Fortunately, you all can help me with that last part!

AbteriX, out of curiosity, which one do you like best, or do you use most often? (I couldn't bring up the eRename site.)

Also, thanks herbiman and brotherS for the recs! I get excited hoping to find a better app than what I'm using.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Registry Cleaner?

I have to agree with moerl, in that the most accurate registry app I've found has been EasyCleaner. It is also the least dangerous to use, it seems.

General Software Discussion / One-hit wonders
« Last post by zridling on April 02, 2006, 05:48 PM »
Victoria Shannon takes a look at two one-hit wonders in a "where are they now" column which caught my eye. I think one of the biggest one-hit wonders that never survived was one of the first PIMs, Ecco Pro. Only Microsoft OneNote has been able to match its outlining abilities. Some claim that Ecco Pro never died.

What other one-hit tech or software wonders have you come across (alive or dead)?

Living Room / Re: Why Macs Suck
« Last post by zridling on April 02, 2006, 06:19 AM »
What are you people talking about? I thought Mac stood for "Media Access Control." I could be wrong, but I still think the attraction to Apple products is the "futz factor"; that is, the will to fiddle and toy with a device endlessly, rarely producing anything.

So true, and be warned: my site, my tastes, and my judgment, and I'd never cater to the wee ones. I've [proudly] been criticized by print columnists over the page-3 screenshots. Oh well, one man's art is another's offense, but I don't mean it as such.

Duly noted. I also found another one through a reader (Kiwi2b) on my blog, simply titled, File Renamer.

Hey, it finally got updated tonight with one program — ACDSee Pro. Here's the link to my typical graphics screenshot:

Thanks patteo for the suggestion on command line utility features and for synopsizing the program for us. Most renamers don't go that far. D-FileMU — I wonder how that name came about?

As of now, that info is source-dependent. For myself, it would be nice to have a URI associated with a photo to know where to look again for its home.

Got it! Would seem handy for quickly renaming a series within a folder.

Wow, nice file manager kimmchii! I had no idea ExplorerXP was out there. This review will center around file renamers only, but for the person who wants to compose the "Review of File Managers," that is perhaps an essential feature. Thanks, now you've just cost me an hour of my life diving into ExplorerXP.

Like you, Allen, I was surprised how easy Oscar's File Renamer was to use. I used Real-DRAW for several years and that cat was always coding. Moreover, I'm surprised it's freeware.

Official Announcements / Redefining what "review" means?
« Last post by zridling on March 30, 2006, 11:00 PM »
Something else might be to define the status reviews by type and approximate number of words:

Mini-Review: 500 words or less, focused on discussion of one program, namely it's latest release;

Review: 1500 word article that reviews in significantly more detail a specific release of a single program;

Shootout or "Review of..." [Archive tools, Downloaders, etc.]: 4000+ word review of four or more of the leading tools within a category, rather than an exhaustive, kitchen sink approach, which can still be done, but is perhaps unnecessary.

I honestly can't wait. I'll be buying the Home/Student version, since it comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Sadly, OneNote is only available in this version and the Enterprise version. That's insane. OneNote is fantastic.

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use rss feeds?
« Last post by zridling on March 30, 2006, 10:06 PM »
allen hits on a serious problem — I'm addicted to information — it's my soap opera every day — and my OPML file is so large that I avoid it. I answer email once a week or less most of the time for the same reason: so much to plow through, and when I'm done, I'm exhausted. Thanks to Newsgator's about face on subscriptions, I recently recanted my rants against FeedDemon.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: I love the Bulk Rename Utility!
« Last post by zridling on March 30, 2006, 09:35 PM »
hamradio, I have always loved Flexible Renamer since v.7.3, and that's over three years ago, but it has long been abandoned — at least it hasn't been touched since 2003. For renaming files, no other app is faster than Flexible Renamer imo, but Bulk Rename Utility is the killer app in this category.

As always, if you use it, show the author some love and throw money at him. His PayPal donation page list various donation levels, which is neat, too.

PC World has put out a list titled 101 Fabulous Freebies. You can judge for yourself what their list lacks, along with some questionable inclusions at best. Hey, but it's another webpage of lists, which with 10 francs is worth... 10 francs!  ;)
