Living Room / Re: I wish there was some way to Encrypt my bike so it won't be stolen
« Last post by mouser on December 19, 2006, 12:48 AM »
you know it's always productive to look for isomorphisms between different domains.

if we ask, what would it look like to "encrypt" a bike, a novel idea comes to mind..

you see how some people remove the seat from their bike and take it with them so that no one can steal and ride away with their bike.  but a downside is you have to carry the seat around with you.

well what if instead of carrying the seat with you, you just "scrambled" the bike parts, by making a bike where you could easily swap the seat for the handlebars, and lock them in place.  seems to me because they are build in pieces of the bike you could make some very strong locks that would lock the pieces in place and make the bike not very useful to a thief..

I found the comments about Venture Capital funding in that essay particularly interesting:

Venture capital, he added, "makes sense for very few companies. When you're in something that requires a lot of money to start or where time-to-market is critical, then maybe it makes sense."
...
For that reason, Holt puts venture capital as number seven on her list of funding sources for new companies -- and she has led three startups. Before turning to venture capital, she will try to tap personal savings, debt, angel investments, government loans and grants and even financing from potential vendors and customers. Mousimi Shaw, for her part, increased her student loans to help start Sikara & Co., a jewelry maker.

More so than other types of investors, venture capitalists insist on telling you how to run your business, said Rodger Desai, chief executive of New York-based Rave Wireless. Their recommendations can seem shortsighted, even wrongheaded. "A lot of VCs have never managed anyone or worked in an operating company. So as a founder, you do have to fight for what you believe in. You're the only one who really knows."

I'd be very interested in hearing reasons why people might prefer other tools over my own LaunchBar Commander (info here).  It's always helpful to hear suggestions for improvements from people who have evaluated a bunch of similar tools.

Let's start a thread posting links to more.. I know there were a couple of garfield cartoon mashups where they removed the text.. anyone have the link to that one and others?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Pasting into Live Mail Desktop
« Last post by mouser on December 18, 2006, 06:16 PM »
well youve already tried the one thing i was thinking to recommend, changing to jpg mode.

let's see if we can try an experiment:

capture a window once when screenshot captor is NOT runing, and just do a ctrl+v when in windows file explorer to save the image data to a file.  Test paste in mail make sure it works.

then capture same window when screenshot captor IS running, and do a ctrl+v again in windows file explorer to save this image data to a file.  Test paste in mail make sure it still doesnt work, as expected.

Send me the files ([email protected]).

Maybe you could also send me a screenshot of how it looks when you paste it into the mail program.

The one thing i can think of is that maybe sc is creating a high-color image and the other isnt, and somehow thats confusing it..

just my 2 cents:
if you pay for a program and the comany dies and makes no provisions for you to be able to activate the software or if you pay for it and they go out of business and dont deliver it, etc., then i dont see anything immoral about bypassing the activation of the program using whatever means you have available.

This is a bit of sad news, but an illuminating bit of research on the increasing consolidation of web traffic on a few top websites:

From Read/WriteWeb:
Last week I was following the De-Portalization of the Internet thread, started by Fred Wilson and then extended by Keith Teare. I was struck by one observation in particular by Fred:

"I don't have the data to prove it, but my guess is if you looked at the percent of all pageviews that are generated each month, a much smaller portion exist on the top 10 properties today than in 2000, at the height of the first Internet era."

Essentially Fred's theory is that the Long Tail of Internet content makes up a higher percentage of total Web page views today, than 6 years ago.

I asked Web Analytics firm Compete if they could come up with some data to prove or disprove Fred's hypothesis. Compete kindly provided me with some great data, which in a nutshell disproves Fred's theory. According to Compete's data, the top 10 domains are not shrinking - but proportionally increasing.

Well we can't stop people from lying.. All we can do is make it clear that it won't be tolerated here and eliminate the possibilities of mistakes and excuses.

If we found out someone was being paid to write good things about a program we would publicly warn people to stay away from it, so I think that is enough of an incentive to keep people from trying it here.

yes the blocked cookie could do it - i should probably add a message about having to have cookies enabled.
But the fact that it's recognizing you on the forum should mean that it can see the cookie.

The cookie name should be SMFCookie879  from the donationcoder.com website.

My experience has always been that for every person nice enough like you to report and help figure out a problem without losing their mind, their are 20 others who just get very angry and leave, so i really do appreciate your good nature about this and i assure i will help you get it resolved if you stick with it :)

See if you can find the cookie and allow it.

ps. regarding blocking cookies:
As someone who used to be paranoid about cookies, what i do now is allow all cookies, and then use a program that will delete all cookies except the ones i specify when i run it occasionally.  I think this makes 1000x more sense than blocking cookies from ever getting on your pc, since so many sites need them for temporary things.  The real concern about cookies is not them being on your pc, but of them identifying you over time, so by letting them get put on your pc but periodically deleting them, you get the benefits without the drawbacks.  just my 2 cents worth of opinion.  might be time for a thread on good cookie cleaning software..

Hi abm,
you are clearly registered since you are posting here.
If you go to this page:
https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php

Does it recognize you and display your forum user name (abm) and let you download a key various programs?  It should give you a link for it.

If not, let me know and i will try to help more.  The only other thing i can think of is if your firewall might be blocking the page from recognizing you, but then i dont think you would be able to post :)

You can also email me at [email protected] for more help.

The most accurate portrayal of computer technology has to be the printer error scene in "Office Space" where he is cursing out the printer for displaying an incoherent error message when it doesnt work.

as you discovered the send to menu (and also the user tool menu) can let you do a lot of stuff using your existing programs and context menu.

the advantages of the built in screenshot captor emailing facilities are:
1) you can send multiple screenshots at once (you may be able to do this via context menu, not sure)
2) you can add a list of common email recipients and select from menu in one action. [i think this is main advantage]
3) you can prefill a standard subject and message contents

i agree with josh that putting war games on that list is a crime and travesty.

relatively speaking, war games may be one of the most accurate protrayals of computer technology ever seen in a mainstream movie.
