I have yet to see Archos hit a homerun with their devices.  They always seem so promising, yet they never quite cross that line of truly awesome.

The first archos devices were ahead of their time.  But because they were ahead, people didn't fully grasp what the potential was at the time, and they cut deals with the industries to cripple them.  Since then, they've sort of squandered the advantages they did have in devices that never quite reached the levels of those first devices.  I still have one of the first/second gen devices, and it's pretty amazing considering how old it is that it is still quite useful.
That's a sobering thought to have, thanks.  It's interesting to see the history of business successes and failures.  There's a very fine line between the two.  It almost makes you think there's a fine line between the ipod and the Rio player.  A couple of different events here and there, and it might have played out totally different.  On one hand, you want to say that Archos should have just trusted themselves and not capitulated to their eventual partners.  On the other hand, that takes big balls when you have no userbase experience to look at.  That's the risk of a pioneer...it comes down to huevos.

Apparently Light Alloy is now freeware.  I used the Google translator and scrolled to the bottom.

Cool. You can also download the standard version from Softpedia instead of waiting for the download server count down:

Very cool, thanks!  THat's way better.

Edit: I then dig around a bit in XYplorer, and found out that it has a rename method called "Edit Item Names ...", with which I can pretty much do what I would like to do with Oscar's File Renamer. Not sure when it got this (I often upgrade XY without knowing what's new). It's nice

You and I got it since XYplorer version 9.60  (2010-10-06). And it's definitely a nice feature. 8)
Oh Shit!  That is cool!  I didn't realize XYPlorer had basically an Oscar's Renamer function built into it.  That's so awesome.  Man, if he only would fix my one minor complaint of the program, I'd probably depend on it a lot more.

Firefox's "awesomebar" is definitely a nice addition.  But I don't use it because i can't control it at all.  For example, let's say I entered an address and I mispelled it, but pressed enter anyway.  Well, I'd like to remove that entry from firerfox's "memory".  Also, I may want to remove other addresses from there selectively.  There's no way to go in there and start messing around with everything.  So i don't use it for that reason.  I rely on Linkman for bookmarking and finding addresses I want.

It's just like the Outlook address history which I have cursed pretty thoroughly in a thread here.  You can't go in the place where all those addresses are stored and mess around.  Oh man, don't even remind me.  I absolutely HATE the way outlook/exchange handles contacts, addresses, displayed names, cc, ...basically anything that has to do with keeping the contacts inside the program.  Their implementation is horrific.

There are so many problems with the tablet market right now, and it seems like some of the issues are going away slowly, but they are still largely in tact.  A lot of what I say is going to rub people the wrong way, so I apologize in advance.

First, the companies need to stop selling tablets packaged with cellular service.  It's not a phone, it never will be.  Phones are phones.  Tablets are tablets.  It doesn't matter if it looks the same or not.  My LCD monitor also looks similar to an iphone and a tablet, it doesn't mean I should have to buy cellular service for it.  Yes, that's an absurd argument, but I'm just making a point.  Apple can get away with it because they were the first and they have a HUGE userbase.  Samsung shouldn't do it, Toshiba shouldn't, etc.  And even Apple offered a standalone version right off the bat also.
i don't know if these companies realize the psychological impact of buying something that has a monthly charge associated with it.  Let's say you want to buy a $300 gadget.  That's fine.  Some people will just do it without even a lot of research beforehand if it just grabs their eye.  However, if that thing now comes with a monthly plan for something, it's a totally different animal.  Now they have to think about the $30 monthly charge, if they really need it, do they get the device now and cancel the subscription in a month?  But now that's more work for them to do, and they have to remember to do it, which isn't always the case.  If they forget, now they have to pay more, or pay penalties, etc.  It's a trap.  It's much more comforting to buy something, pay for it, and not have to worry about it after that.  And we know these companies don't make it easy to cancel.  So they need to stop this subscription bullshit.

Now, build quality.  Apple set an amazing standard for build quality with their first generation tablet.  If companies don't rival that quality, good luck.  Now, Apple sucks in other things that the other companies are doing better now.  USB ports, other convenient ports around the device, more flexibility getting data on and off the device.  But in the mass consumer market, those things are less important than the build quality...which leads to first impressions and all that.

The fragmented Android market is really really bad.  Somehow, and I don't know how, these devices need to be able to update to the latest OS's a little more quickly and easily.  Never in my life have I been so aware of multiple versions of an operating system simultaneously.

The other thing to consider in the tablet market when Android and Windows tablets become available: try not to think about it as ipad vs. etc.  Think about it this way; jailbroken ipad vs. etc.  Why?  Because a jailbroken ipad now has the restrictions removed that all of us pc users care about.  Mainly, it comes down to being able to freely move files and folders around.  So a jailbroken ipad is a totally different animal than a regular ipad.  The app market for Apple is huge, so like Windows, you have lots of options for third-party software.  Unlike the Android market, it's not fragmented.  I don't see this lasting forever.  I predict that Google will try to take care of the fragmentation issues, and then there should be more apps to play around with than the itunes apps.  However, there are a few developers that create apps ONLY for jailbroken ipads, which is very cool.  That puts the ipad into the same realm as a Windows pc.  No restrictions.  So the Apple vs PC arguments becomes moot then, and you just choose the most capable device.  What's cool about that is that you can choose the ipad, which will probably be the better device for the time being.

i love that!

Btw, is it only FireFox that hiccups, or your entire system? The saving of FF's session state shouldn't be affecting the entire system, but it will freeze the entire FireFox process.
My hiccup issue is 100% resolved.  It was firefox's session restore feature.  Once I disabled that, everything was perfect.
2835
y0himba!  Nice!  That's cool of you to post that!

Yeah, isn't that funny?  I think it's because MS likes to stick their IE engine all over the place, so that header area is probably just a modified IE something or other.  I hate it when developers stick in a pane or view in their programs which is just a window for IE, and then they say "built in browser".  I hate it because IE is usually slow and they are using it as a shortcut for functionality, rather than programming their own interface.  I shouldn't criticize too much because I don't know how much work is involved one way or the other.

Is the firefox memory issue something that mouser's Process Tamer can improve somehow?

ok 40, good post, you deserve a:

Ok, I bet you guys have never tried this:
Click somewhere inside the header field for Outlook 2007 (I don't know if the other versions do it).  Then Ctrl-scroll with the mouse wheel (like you would zoom on a webpage).  Isn't that odd?

Ok that's it.

?  What's a ramdisk?

ROTFLOL :eusa_dance:
That wasn't a joke!  Seriously, what is it, and more importantly, how do you move something to it?  f0dder threw that out there like everyone knows, but I have no idea how to do this.  Cmon man, don't be a tease!  Give us the secret, baby!
2840
Personally I moved all my firefox profile & session stuff to a ramdisk to avoid the hiccups.
?  What's a ramdisk?

Try SpeedyFox: http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox
I use it once or twice per week; it helps :-)
Nice!  I think I notice a difference.

4wd, I just use the latest normal version of Firefox, whatever i may be.  i think it's 3.6.x right now.

tomos, Firefox has always been a hog.  At home, it's left on for days, and I come back and it has a crazy amount of ram stored up if you look at the task manager.  I don't know what that means, but the number it has is way bigger than anything else.  but that session restore feature I turned off really did the trick.  In fact, i think firefox has been generally much faster since then.

You know, I complain sometimes about the interface of SFFS, but that darn thing can do everything!  Super Flexible is an extremely accurate name.  I just started using this feature I wasn't aware of which will monitor the USB ports, and detect when my files changed or when I stick my drive in, and it will run the profile.  I was all set to find another third-party program to take care of that for me.  And in typical SFFS fashion, the options are ALL covered:

Screenshot - 2_8_2011 , 7_30_26 PM.png

That's what I'm talking about, baby!  Don't give me command line switches and stuff.  Buttons!  Checkboxes!  Dialogs!  Drop-downs!  Tabs!  Color-pickers!  Let's go!
2845
Do you find that music randomly splutters and sounds juddery from time to time when your opening up process heavy software?
Hmm, I haven't paid attention.  I don't think so, as I would probably have noticed.  I listen to music almost constantly and haven't noticed anything like that.  My computer is pretty beefy, as far as specs, and I hardly come close to pushing the limits, so i don't run into things like that normally.  My problems are always stupid little things like in this thread because I have dozens upon dozens of utilities running at once.  I'm like the opposite of those late 90's typical Windows users who would be vigilant about turning off as many services as possible.  You know who you are!  Everyone here has probably had a phase like that at some point in their lives!!  The other cult is the OCD defragger.

I'll keep an ear out, if I notice it, I'll post.

2846
Stephen, you are crazy man!!

Seriously, it was funny, but would you mind removing that post?  I only say it because someone may come to this thread looking for the answer to this same question, and now your long post hides the answer at the bottom.  you've turned it into Experts Exchange!
2847
Hmm...seems like turning off session restore in firefox (using the about:config area) did the trick.  We'll see.
2848
Well, Firefox is definitely involved with this somehow.  The peaks on the disk activity match up exactly with the firefox.exe.  Now the question is what is making firefox hiccup?  i doubt it's actually firefox itself, but maybe I'm wrong.  I'm sure it's something that interacts with it.  In the disk activity window, it shows 5 firefox lines, 4 of them are the session restore exe.  I'm turning it off now to see if that does it.
2849
Interesting...I didn't think I had Windows Defender installed, but it is.  Furthermore, it is disabled, yet the process MsMpEng.exe is on with 34 threads going.  I looked it up and that exe is attributed to Windows Defender.  I checked again, and yes, it is disabled, so I don't get it.  i do have Microsoft Security Essentials, but that shouldn't include Defender, does it?
2850
Thanks.
What is the difference in all of these things?  Resource Monitor, Task Manager, Process Explorer...I don't get it.
