Living Room / Re: PayPal horror stories: Getting uglier each day

Since when does PayPal require you to enter a credit card's full number to confirm anything?  I don't want that sort of info stored in one of their databases!  Surely there are other ways of confirming this?  Email validation, etc.

Removed from competition.  I have two other entries that I'm happier with; and this one needs a re-write.

Got rid of Folder Guard.  Installed and configured SteadyState, and it seems to be working well.

Also, removed modem and router from kids' bedroom, and they now connect via a Linksys USB wireless device that picks up the router.  Moved router and modem to our room, where they'll be safer.  Am about to get a very nice computer desk/bookshelves hand-made of oak by a guy I went to high school with...

Thank you all for your replies.  Even after a factory restore, it's still acting screwy at boot-up, which makes me thing that there's a hardware issue (AVG, Anti-Malware Bytes, and SuperAntiSpyware all report clean).

When I got it running as good as possible, I put a 30-day trial of Folder Guard on it and disabled downloading.  Seems to be working.

I will also look into SteadyState.  Thanks for the links, app.

Living Room / prevent my kids from downloading files from the Internet
« Last post by kyrathaba on September 22, 2010, 07:17 AM »
I have two boys, ages 11 and 9 who, despite past punishment and dire threats have continued to download silly games, toolbars, etc., onto their desktop computer.  Last night I spent over 2 hours in Safe mode running Anti-Maleware and SuperAntiSpyware.  Found and (supposedly) got rid of many trojans, adware, and at least one worm.  It's still not behaving right.

My question, without getting into a discussion of whether they should even BE allowed to have a computer (which my wife and I are also discussing) is:

Is there a way, without shelling out money for specialized software, to prevent them from downloading games, toolbars, etc.?  I still want the computer to be able to download images for webpages, Windows Updates, etc.  I just don't want them to be able to manually download anything.

The kids' computer runs Windows XP SP3 (I know, I know... but it only has 512 Mb of RAM).

Some awesome photos, some will make you smile, some are gorgeous vistas -- all are color photos (or maybe "colorized") from early 1940s.

Living Room / Old Burma Shave signs

For those who never saw any of the  Burma Shave signs, here is their history from the 1930's and '40's. Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the 2-lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields.
They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing 1 line of a 4 line couplet......and the obligatory 5th sign advertising  Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.

Here are more of the actual signs:

DON'T STICK YOUR ELBOW
OUT SO FAR
IT MAY GO HOME
IN ANOTHER CAR.
BURMA SHAVE

TRAINS DON'T WANDER
ALL OVER THE MAP
'CAUSE NOBODY SITS
IN THE ENGINEER'S LAP

BY MISTAKE
SHE THOUGHT IT WAS
HER HUSBAND JAKE

I use the free package at http://beanstalkapp.com/, in conjunction with Tortoise SVN, for backing up my C# projects.  Works simply, quickly, and was a breeze to setup.

I've bought several computers (both laptop and desktop) from TigerDirect over the years, and have always been pleased with them.  Most recent one I bought is a Dell Inspiron 1545.  No complaints whatsoever.  I've never tried an Acer laptop, but my very first desktop was an Acer Aspire, so I've got a soft spot where Acer is concerned ;)

Steeladept, thanks for the suggestions.  I read the Apprentice Adept series years ago, but wouldn't mind a re-read.  Here are some more authors I've enjoyed:

Fred Saberhagen
Troy Denning
Raymond E. Feist
David Eddings
China Mieville

Anyone here read "Off Armageddon Reef" by David Weber.  I'm 2/3 of the way through it, and really enjoying it.

That's because any group of people -- be it a website, a church family, a club, etc. -- will have a nucleus of active, "go-getter" type people, and a much larger group of orbiting "hangers-on".

I took a look at all the links you posted, Mouser.  I've no doubt you could blow the existing options away.  I'm on board if you need a playtester down the road.

Anyone ever read "Var the Stick"?  I'm a fan of Piers Anthony.  He published it when I was two years old ;)

Hmm, let's see... of the last ten books I read, five were re-reads (Roger Zelazny's "Chronicles of Amber"), three were Dean Koontz novels, and the other two were Roger MacBride Allen's "The Ring of Charon", and Richard Kadrey's "Sandman Slim".

I'm still in the process of reading the Borland Delphi Language Guide, and the Inform 7 Handbook by Jim Aiken.
2844
Yep, that's the impression I'm forming as well.
2845
Shortcuts don't change the
font of an existing console. They provide the initial console settings. And
they don't do it by calling any API. The console subsystem parse shortcut
files directly. By the way, when we have a shortcut and set the font
property, a registry key with the same name of the shortcut file will be
added to HKCU\Console, similar to the second method.
2846
I guess the shortcut route might work, but then the end-user would have to use that particular shortcut to start the program, in order to get the desired font, right?
2847
I've got a good portion of my original goal down: (1) be able to change font and color programmatically.  The only thing I haven't been able to figure out how to do is to change the font size programmatically.  It just doesn't seem that this should be so obscure in a language as well-liked and widely used as Delphi.

No, I wouldn't even consider touching the Registry.
2848
Thanks, App!  I will try this.
2849
That's what I'm in the process of doing now.  I'll let you know if I find a solution.  Thanks!
2850
Thanks, app, that worked well.  Now if I can just find something to programmatically effect the console font size, I'm in business.  Looks like WinAPI is the place to search...
