WhiteSmoke and Babylon may very well be owned by the same people. At the same time they both offered lifetime licenses, and then kept quiet! I will be surprised if we ever hear from either of them again.

General Software Discussion / CFi ShellToys 7.3
« Last post by Curt on October 22, 2011, 09:37 AM »
CFi ShellToys has been talked about many times in our forum, but it doesn't seem to have a thread of its own, so I am starting this new thread, merely to tell that ShellToys has been updated to version 7.3. I use ShellToys many times a day, and have done so for some years; It makes life easier ;-)

You get 54 shell extensions, and 25 shell tools, and a Control Panel, and a tabbed CFi Explorer, for:
£20 (approx. USD $33, EUR €23), after annoying "system ID"-procedure.
45-days trial.

http://www.cfishelltoys.com/

Changes and additions in ShellToys 7.3.0:

Clipboard+ now supports Rich Text (RTF) clipboard content, and pastes formatted text when the Paste To Window option is used (if the target window supports RTF).
Clipboard+ can now paste graphics as well as text directly to another window.
Clipboard+ now allows text/RTF clips to be edited.

Batch Rename adds a new renaming tool — the ability to rename MP3/WMA files based on their audio-tag details.
Batch Rename now includes a 'Quick Preview' area to provide live feedback about the resulting new names as you change options.

CFi Explorer adds a number of small improvements: optional close buttons on tabs; clearer feedback when drag-reordering tabs; an easy option to reopen a closed tab; an option to clear folder history on exit; an option to close all tabs but the current tab; a tab can be closed by middle-clicking it.

If CFi Explorer receives a notification to open a particular folder in a new tab, it now checks whether that folder is already open and, if it is, switches to the appropriate tab rather than duplicating it.

In CFi Explorer you can now use Back/Forward buttons on your mouse or keyboard rather than clicking the Back/Forward toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts.

In CFi Explorer, if you enable the option to include an 'Open in CFi Explorer' item on the context menus of drives and folders, those folders will be opened in the existing CFi Explorer window rather than a new window.

Browse Media and Play Media Album add a new, shared 'skiplist' feature, allowing you to skip audio tracks you prefer not to play.
The audio tag editors in Browse Media and the Media Info window now provide support for a wider number of common tags including Comment, Composer, Publisher and AlbumArtist.
Browse Media now lists more information about individual audio tracks when the folder contains a compilation of tracks from different albums.

In Convert Audio Files the option to convert to/from Ogg Vorbis format has been removed (temporarily, we hope).
Fixes a bug in which ShellToys' audio components would be unable to play (or retrieve information about) some 320kbps MP3 files.

Change Date & Time has been redesigned to provide an easier and neater way to select dates and times. In addition, for single images containing EXIF information, the creation/modification date can be set to match the EXIF 'Date taken' tag.
In Change Date & Time, hold Ctrl and drag-drop a file into the window, and the creation/modification fields will be populated with the datetimes of the dropped file.

Split File (and its file reassembler) and Shred File are rewritten to process files considerably faster, and to support multi-gigabyte files.

Shortcut Target supports the new Pinned Site Shortcut (.website) files introduced by Internet Explorer 9.

Run With Parameters now includes the (obvious, but previously-missing) option to run an application with administrator privileges.

The Shut Down menu now includes a 'Switch User' option in Windows XP and higher.

Fixes a bug in Clipboard+ in which searching for clips (Ctrl+F or F3) could fail.

Fixes a bug in Clipboard+ in which the wrong window might be targeted when pasting a clip if the Clipboard+ window were pinned open.

Fixes a bug in Resize Images in which the resized image could be slightly smaller than it should be.

Fixes a variety of other small-but-annoying bugs, and adds numerous other improvements and redesigns.

Found Deals and Discounts / Chameleon Startup Manager 50% off
« Last post by Curt on October 21, 2011, 06:53 AM »
Today (Friday, 21'st October, 2011) only:

Chameleon Startup Manager PC Software with a 50% off Discount Coupon Code

Normal price: $29.95 , today 50% OFF = $14.97
-Bits du Jour

This is the startup delayer that I use myself, and I have tried almost every one there is.

But to understand what a startup manager really is, you must first forget about the "Reduce Boot Times"-nonsense. A startup manager is about having control and stability, even if the price actually is longer boot times!

..., it's very easy to upgrade to build 39 and to revert to build 19, I just have to install the corresponding build, and settings are preserved.

-eh... are you telling that I don't have to remove the newer build before installing the older?

I don't like build 39 because :
- most of the time, it ends the defrag of some partitions before completion with an error message somewhere in the window title bar, (...)

I have not seen any errors from build 39.

--------

this arrived in the post yesterday - not sure was the five week delay (...)

-Bad luck, Tomos. I received my copy a month ago.

-hmm... I forgot: "Avanquest". Sorry!

I now see that Alcohol 120% 8.0 Platinum is a special version made for avanquest.de. I have tried such a situation before, but it was quite some years ago, so don't shoot me if I am wrong, I am only the piano player, no, I mean, the offer teller. Back then I simply wrote support and asked for an English version, and they gave me one. You could try likewise. Avanquest is a big trade company, so don't expect an answer right away. edit: they'll answer within 48 hours.

Edited: On second thought: This is really not "a fine offer"! The original Alcohol 120% is €39 (no "Audio 180%"), but with a lifetime license!
---------------------------------------------

Until the 21'st of October, German pro.de has a fine offer on Alcohol 120% 8 Platinum incl Audio 180% deLuxe: €29.99, normal price: €69 / $100

The homepage is in all German, but I have purchased some programs from them before and can say, they are all right.

"Jetz kaufen" = "Buy now". In the Shopping Cart you can of course click "English" and "US Dollar".

- never mind. DNS was not the problem anyway.

you probably need to investigate the modem, built-in firewall,

I didn't read enough of the manual the first time, so I didn't realize a firewall was integrated. Now I have changed the settings, and voila! Problem solved!

Thanks to all of you, and an extra Thank You, rgdot

I ran a google query for "test ping time" and received quite many answers. I tried the first ten "ping testers". Not one of them could handle my machine's delay / lag, but long before my setup could respond, they reported that some error had happened.

I actually performed the "8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4"-trick last night, but have not seen any improvement worth mentioning. Maybe a second off the time, nothing more than that. But I will try the ping test, thank you.

Well, one thing my imagination is circling around is, if the setup maybe always is first looking for a wireless connection or something - the same modem can be used for WiFi - before deciding for the fixed connection? I have no idea.

Turns out I almost was right:

"on by default", so I pushed the button Off, and it made a little difference.
But some lag is still there, enough to be disappointing.

-thanks for the link. I sure would wish they offered a link to the previous version (for Vista); everything on an English Win 7 seems to be named or placed different from my Danish Vista... I am not sure I can use it. Maybe tomorrow when I have had some sleep; right now it is night around here.

No, theoretically this is a LAN connected via a fixed (hybrid) antenna cable. Very front-end when it was launched 6½ years ago. (Nobody knows anything about it today...) But, yes - DNS issues are likely. I have just not found any reading that I could I understand how to profit from.

General Software Discussion / modem lag. (problem solved)
« Last post by Curt on October 14, 2011, 12:43 PM »
The problem is the same no matter what Internet browser or program I am using, and no matter if I close all security related programs: The very searching for / and opening of each homepage is extremely slow.

The problem is not my download speed; it is 25mbps.

Yesterday I installed a new modem for my fixed connection, because the old one had a theoretic topspeed of 25mbps, and I wanted to upgrade. Now I don't dare to upgrade, because this new Netgear CG 3000 modem is somehow just sooo slow: 20 seconds is the fastest it has been able to find and load a page. A small text page! Most pages will take 30 seconds, buy many pages are taking 40-60 seconds to load! (Edited: I said it wrong: it is not "to load", but "TO FIND, and load"). This is 15-30 seconds slower than it used to be. I might as well use a smartphone...

I am not even able to play my DRM protected music files, because Windows Media Player's browser will time out before the server can renew my license. Edited: No, it doesn't "time out", but "cannot find the page".

The support  people have of course told me that the error must be on my side, not in their precious modem. Hmm... what else can you expect from such people. They even 'forced' me to delete all my cookies! - of course to no avail. I have, also of course, searched for any kind of error that I could think of, but have not found any. And their equipment claims that my connection is flawless. I feel certain the error is inside this new super fast slow modem, but I have no way to prove it to them; they won't listen, because of the 25 mbps download speed. Maybe they are more inclined to listen  after  the weekend... but I am impatient and this is before the weekend.

Have you any idea what may be wrong, or what to do?  :tellme:

Well, one thing my imagination is circling around is, if the setup maybe always is first looking for a wireless connection or something - the same modem can be used for WiFi - before deciding for the fixed connection? I have no idea.

The setup arranged for a new IP address.
No proxy.
What else may you need to know?

An example: Having written this post, I clicked "Preview", and had to wait 10 seconds for Firefox to load these few words!
Another example: It took Firefox 37 seconds to refresh this page (with this first post only)!

This free beta works until October 31, 2011. By then, either the full SoftMaker Office 2012 or a new beta will be available. You can install this beta in parallel to any older SoftMaker Office.

Known problems in this beta:

SoftMaker eM Client is not yet included.

The Berlitz dictionaries are not yet included.

Help files and manuals are still from SoftMaker Office 2010.

http://www.softmaker.../ofw12betareg_en.htm

You need a serial number to install this beta. Please enter your name and e-mail address to receive an e-mail message with your personal serial number.

But, hey, BasicMaker will be finally be available!
That has really taken some years!!

This offer is a "code 3" discount, meaning it does not give the right to upgrade with an otherwise normal discount.

-that was then. Today's offer is a "code 1" -offer, giving you normal rights. Only available today via Giveawayoftheday and >this link<. Wondershare has apparently closed AnyBizSoft, and is re-launching their products under the Wondershare -name. However, the new "PRO" editor converter has clearly been further improved; it now includes OCR.

Pro's "normal price" is said to be $80, but today only it is merely $15.
A fine offer.
