By that standard, I should be pretty good. (8 months razor-free...) I do run Slackware at home, does that count?
BTW- that test is pretty funny. I took it 3 years ago and I got most of them correct, but that probably had more to do with my second-hand knowledge of serial killers than anything else. (I used to work nightshift with some interesting folks)

Here's another way, using Sysinternals' wonderful Contig

from the website:

 To make a new file that is defragmented upon creation, use Contig like this:

Usage: contig [-v] [-n filename length]

Maybe start with a bare-naked Litestep config and use LsLua for the scripting. Lightweight and C-like, it should do well. If I remember correctly, BBLean also had a super-powered script engine in the works. Recall?

Looks like Mobber is more of a traditional chat network thing (you gotta sign up) whereas Gabbly is a kind of free-for-all. On Gabbly's forum, there has been much discussion about this issue; make it a sign-in thing so you always have the same name, or leave it as it is so anybody can jump in anywhere. Looks like Mobber took the former...

Living Room / Re: How long will it take you to adopt Windows Vista as your OS?
« Last post by Edvard on March 20, 2006, 06:49 PM »
Too bad linux SUCKS, with a kernel designed by people who mentally live in the 70'es. The "user-friendly" distros are even more bloated than XP.

I guess I'll give Mac OS X a try, it's the only decent realistic alternative to windows for desktop use.
Eek, OS war ahead! (Umm... just kidding)
When I said Linux, I meant that as an answer to the question "How long will it take ...". Meaning never. I have decided that with Vista, I'm done trying to keep up with Windows. I certainly can't afford it and buying hardware based on whether it is compatible with Linux beats having to buy a whole new system because Microsoft decides to touch-up their paint job. Actually, Microsoft has done a good job to build a computing platform that is easy to use and available anywhere you care to look, runs 80-90% of the available software on the web, and MOST of the time requires a minimum of tweaking to "Just Work", sure I'll give 'em that. But I really don't understand what folks mean when they say 'Linux sucks' and I fire up my box and have no problems. Really, none. Sure it's been a long and many times hard road. Giving the details would make for a really long post. The bottom line is, it seems MS have successfully achieved a certain level of power vs. ease of use (which I think they did a mighty fine job of doing with W2K, why'd they have to go and ruin it?...) but it seems like now they are just piling on the sugar and MSG and making you pay for it. It's like wanting bagels, getting frosted donuts, getting charged for cream filled puff pastries and asked to sign up for the "Eclair of the month" club (for a hefty fee, of course) and ending up with a craving to make your own damn bagels after wiping the chocolate sprinkles off your face. I would encourage giving Mac a try. BSD under the hood can't be a bad thing and I predict great things happening in Mac-land, especially since being ported to Intel chipsets and Mac Minis making it affordable.

@kimmchii and Carol,
Also, you should check into the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance and what they are attempting to do...

I bought my copy of XP bundled OEM with a new harddrive (?!?!) so I guess as long as my harddrive holds out, so does my license? I've transferred my XP twice now (about 3 weeks ago was the last one) and they've always given me a new activation. Over the phone, even.

@Carol- TRS-DOS is (was) the version of DOS that ran on Tandy computers (TRS-80 and the like) back when every computer maker had their own version of BASIC as well.
Look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS-DOS

As far as hardware goes, Linux is supported and is supporting more hardware every day. Consulting the home page of your manufacturer would be a good start, but then again you'd have to learn a whole new operating system...

@Cpilot- I've heard stories from all ends of the spectrum; Folks who tried and dropped Linux entirely because it didn't [place gripe here] and never gave it a chance. Some folks gave it a good go and dropped it when their curiosity level hit their tolerance ceiling (usually takes 6 mo. to a year, so your number matches) and some who just somehow "get it" and never look back. I don't think those are going to change very soon, but when Vista does come out, I predict we'll see the cream seperate from the milk.
As far as MS goes, folks can rant about predatory marketing tactics all they want, but the Windows team has really gone out of their way to make it all as easy as possible for the largest common denominator end user. I suppose there are a large contingent of folks out there who actully like Clippy and don't banish the search puppy in XP because they feel it actually helps them. Vista is simply the next level of it, no doubt with some industrial-strength code behind it all (remember... those guys get PAID for what they do...).  As much as we all like to say it sometimes, RTFM is some pretty cold advice when someone actually needs help, and that seems to be the Linux battle-hymn some days...

(hehe I just had a thought... You all know the Monty Python 'Spam' skit? Replace "spam, spam, spam, spam" with "R, T, F, M" and you get the picture) :)

So, after a brief initial session with input from mouser, allen, m_s, jgpaiva and tsaint, it appears to be quite interesting. Not as good as IRC or your favorite IM client, but for folks who are not comfortable with those, it is easy to use and all it requires for private chat is a clear website (there are gabbly sessions going on at google and others...) and send your friend or relative a link. An interesting note: tsaint noticed that it got through a proxy that was blocking irc and icq type stuff. This may be a security concern in some circles, we'll see. Hmmm.. maybe it'll be a way for those in restricted countries (China, Iran, etc.) to make contact. I could also see this as a way of getting feedback from website beta testing, or web-based customer service implementation for small businesses, or... the possibilities aren't quite endless, but there is a lot of potential.
As far as features, it looks somewhat like a typical chat client without all the bells and whistles. It can be docked into a frame at the right side or bottom of your browser window, sports an RSS feed and of course, you can change your name and the chat window has a history, which is nice. That's pretty much it, check it out...

Linux. And that's ALL I have to say. Except I really liked W2K. XP was just fancier.
I just took the (slightly outdated) "What OS are you" quiz on BBSpot and (this is too creepy) guess what?...
I'm "Slackware Linux".
Take a wild flying guess what I run at home...

Red, I've seen your name way too many times whenever I'm skipping through litestep-land (as if that's a bad thing...), welcome to DC. In my own quest for launchbar goodness, I've gone through most of those very same lists and the 404's are like a flesh eating virus; every day another site goes... here's what I do: find the most recent url link, hit it on the http://www.archive.org Wayback Machine. Somewhere on the cached site you'll many times find a mouseover link that will let you see the name of the package, like (url)/uberlauncherbeta021.zip. Now you have something to Google with. I've found lots of WAY gone shells like that. Many ftp sites still have them up.

I've tried many of these, and after living through crashes, black pdfs and other annoyances that will keep me from doing a mini-review , I have settled on these two as "best of breed"

PDF995 (Shareware, unrestricted, US $9.95)
http://www.pdf995.com
This is what I recommend for folks who need to make pdf's from their CAD software so I can print it for them or for sending to others. Dead simple to set up and use, all paper sizes are included as well as space for custom sizes. It's even free to use unrestricted as long as you don't mind popup ads for, um, themselves. And fer pete's sake, it's only 10 bucks minus a nickel, jeez.

PDFCreator (Freeware, Open Source)
http://sourceforge.n...projects/pdfcreator/
My personal favorite. Lots of options including printing to formats other than PDF, lots of paper and screen sizes to choose from. Requires installing Ghostscript (included in some of the PDFCreator downloads). The amount of options and the fact that it requires installing a 3rd-party postscript library may make it a bit daunting for some folks, but that's how I like it; nice and techy-like.

For my suite of PDF mightyness, I use PDFTK (mentioned above), PDF Blender, Ghostview and PStoEdit. So there.

 "Friends don't let friends spin trance"

We also discovered a universal constant:
Jungle = AmenBreak x 160BPM

Try it. It works.

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package

The updates used to be really problematic -- had a terrible time getting an update downloaded.  However, with the latest version they must have done some serious work on their server.

Make that servers. plural. Multiple update server mirrors. Nice trick, that. Happened about halfway through ver. 6's life.

@Carol-
You're right, Antivir doesn't scan emails as they come in. BUT... as soon as I get around to opening one of those (assuming I'm dumb enough to open anything suspicious) it has so far caught anything that comes across. And one nice thing that it does that I'm not sure any others do, is to wipe out the virus while leaving the email intact.

As far as nag screens go in Antivir, well, that's the "price" of many a freeware. Antivir is the only one I know of that runs reliably on NT4 (my sob story) and it has performed excellently since day one. Version 7 is a mighty step upwards in looks and ease of use. As far as updates, I remember it was about a year-and-a-half ago, AntiVir put out their "user's wish list" and tops was more update mirrors, and we got it. Updates are 10 times more reliable since then, although I wouldn't recommend trying to update early to mid morning (US time) on a weekday. Other times are fast and reliable.

Maybe post a css and those who are willing can write the generic html. That way you control what gets bold, center, etc. and we just provide the raw ingredients. Doable? or too complicated?

Quick Reply...
@superboyac:
I didn't mean to imply such a scope. I was just wondering how the Music Creation Software 'scene' is nowadays. Many websites of (especially) the share/free-ware tools are either gone or not updated at all. Some are hanging in there with a huge community that was built from the ground up but probably not a whole lot of new members. Perhaps I'm just waxing nostalgic for the days when everybody and his brother was writing trackers and VST plugins instead of Winamp skins and mp3 rippers. Anyways, I agree this has gotten off-topic and maybe we oughta take it to another thread...
