Take this statement:
Unfortunately Tiled exports in XML, a language I know nothing about and tried to figure out how to work with it in Flash a couple years ago but was deeply frustrated by how you had to reference objects (_root.firstChild.firstChild.firstChild.firstChild etc.).

and reverse it.

the time you spent figuring out how to get flash to load and work with the xml file will be paid back to you double.  it will in the long run be far easier for you to work with such a file in flash, plus youll gain skills working with xml files which will serve you well in the future.

addendum -
please don't take my post the wrong way - it brings me great pleasure to be able to send these out all over the world.. i get a smile just thinking about people opening their packages.  that's why i couldn't resist sending them nice fast airmail.

and when you think about it, it's kind of magical that you can send something so far for such relatively small amount of money, so we shouldn't be complaining.

also always remember, these things are all paid for by the donations to the site from normal people who have chosen to support the site, so thank you to everyone who has supported this site.  and of course we owe thanks to cody and his owner nudone for the images.

HEY!
Please let us know when you get your mugs and if you like them.  better yet, take a picture of yourself in front of your computer with the mug and post it here

I don't know how those editors work. Do they just create a text file based on the graphics included in the setup? Got links to the sites so I can read more about them?

Yes, they create data files you can load from flash or any game engine.

Some tile/level editor websites:

In these cases, we should pay the international shiping
nah - i think we just better make the prizes more valuable next time, so at least the value of the prize exceeds the price of shipping!  or perhpas next time i will send them via boat with a 4-6 week delivery time.. i just couldn't bare to have everyone wait that long..

I agree with jgpaiva.  Also I would suggest that you could use one of the existing free map/level editors to edit levels (TileStudio, Mappy, etc).

Love the latest ideas!
I am a big fan of user-generated levels as puzzles, so i always try to think of ways to make a game level-based.

What if on each level you used a level map which specified where your plant grows, and where some water sources and enemy bases are.

Then your job is to build defenses to protect your flower until it blossoms.

And what if in order to make it blossom your workers had to go fetch watcher and bring it back.

So not only do you have to defend your flower against the hordes trying to attack it, but you have to have like a plan to help your workers bring it water.

Yes i definitely agree it sounds like a nice idea - and i will put it on my todo list - i just have to add the ability to specify more custom instructions for each app, and then this will be easy to add.

By the way cinpl, we very much love having software authors here - please do make a post to introduce us to your programs - we won't view it as spam as long as you promise not to make the same post about them each week and tell us that we won the lottery :)  ;D

i do not believe it would be possible to go from 0 to skilled enough to have a reasonable chance at this competition in one month.  They get some very high quality entries.

On the other hand:
1) it wouldn't hurt to try if you have the time - worst case is you learn a lot of flash in a month.
2) it might be time to learn enough to collaborate with someone who already knows flash.

I am so excited that you are going to participate in the contest - i think it's great fun to have someone from dc entering.  And I'd love to see more people from here give it a try as well.  JayIsGames is one of the premiere flash game sites and last year's contest had some truly professional and elaborate entries so expect some very tough competition.

Let's all help out with ideas and testing - and if anyone else wants to take a try at entering by all means post and ask for help with ideas and art and stuff.

I'll pledge right now that for anyone who has been a DC member here as of yesterday, DC will match any prize you win in the contest (up to $500), and a mug for all who enter it at all.  Plus of course you'd gain hero status here :)

I'll post my ideas for the game here later.  Also I encourage people to drop by our irc channel (#donationcoder on efnet or hit the "chat" button at top of page to join via java applet in your browser), to talk about game ideas.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Just started using LBC - first thoughts
« Last post by mouser on January 05, 2007, 08:18 AM »
Welcome to the site Omnivox -

Some very well considered suggestions.

Don't think that I'm heavily critizising your app - just pointing out a few points that need improvement.

Not at all!  One of the main goals of this forum is to make a place where programmers and users can exchange ideas and collaborate - suggestions and constructive criticism are very very welcome!

Your comments about the docking issues are definitely correct.  Docking options in LBC currently suck.  I know it, you know it, even my cat knows it.  It's something I have to improve and it's on my todo list.

As for the save button: One of the reasons I was motivated to make LBC was that i used to use a docking bar software that saved all it's settings in the registry and i hated that, and then one day it lost all my settings and i was not happy.  So i am committed to making LBC protected against such stuff.  That's why it has special backup functions in the tool menu and does other backup stuff.  I think i will add like an auto save to temporary file while working thing.

However one of the weird things about LBC is that it works with a couple of dif files for your configuration.  There is one main file, and then it specifies additional launchbar files that you can have open at the same time, so that you could have 5 different launchbar files open, with dif launchbars in each.  One of the effects seems to be that sometimes people will get a crash of their pc and when they restart LBC it is empty and it seems like they lost all their data, but really all that happened is that LBC main config didn't load the last launchbar config file they were working on (i have to figure out why that isn't getting saved before reboot and fix that).  So do make sure you do a file->open and browse around and see if you can't find your file you were working on before your BSOD.

Keep the suggestions coming - as soon as i finish up this major release on one of my other programs (Find and Run Robot), I have some updates to do on LBC and my other apps.

this is not a bad idea, and my plan is to soon add more ability to fine tune how to handle different programs.

until then, it sounds though like you might get the basic behavior you want if instead you just leave on the high cpu taming set PT to "ignore" certain specific programs like the games and internet connection utilities and others that you want to let run at high priority, which PT already will let you do.

Have no fear pnakbet, we are here to help.
You should be able to get a license key from this page: https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php

If that page says you havent registered at the forum, then you've probably got a similar problem as abm with cookies.

The above is for if you haven't donated. IF you have donated to the site and didnt get a license key email, contact me at [email protected] and i can help more.

General Software Discussion / Re: Remoting Software Questions
« Last post by mouser on January 04, 2007, 02:18 PM »
Has anyone tried to remote from a computer you're remoting to? Or trying to have the remote computer remote back to the one you're sitting at?

yes, general works ok for testing though hard to do anything.  Just remember you can't usually use your real ip, you have to use loopback 127.0.0.1 (at least that's my experience).

new minor update with bug fixes.. (2.00.08)
expect new version soon with a couple more major features before v2 goes live.

same downlod for new version.
Skin Pack has not changed so you don't need to redownload that.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR and X1 (or other desk. Search tools)
« Last post by mouser on January 04, 2007, 01:31 PM »
the problem with the google search is a bad google alias with unnesc language encoding info
go the your alias tab of farr options
double click search
find the google and google groups entries

change the part that says
ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=$$1
to simply:
q=$$1

so you should have
Google $$1 |http://www.google.com/search?q=$$1
GoogleGroups $$1 |http://groups.google.com/groups?q=$$1&sa=N&tab=wg

I've tried and been quite happy with
Remote Admin and Remotely Anywhere

Whatever you use - it's one of the real pleasures to be able to remotely connect to your home pc - definitely worth the trouble.

I keep trying to get someone on DC to do a big review of these tools, but the tasks has driven both of them insane (Josh + Ken)..  :tellme:

great questions..
i dont know the answer to the x1 question - i wonder if there is a commandline way to launch x1 and start a search?

as for the non-standard characters and search alias..  this sounds like something i can fix.. can you give me an example of a search and why it fails and what it should be sending to the internet?
