Yeah, I'm now looking at universal docking stations that work with a single USB 2.0 connection to your laptop.

From Dell Wireless USB Station page:

Wireless USB is a new type of short-range, high-bandwidth wireless networking technology. It transfers large amounts of data wirelessly over short distances and at a much faster date rate (480 Mbps) than Bluetooth or WiFi.

Anyone tried this?  Comments?

Cha-ching!  Left the port blank, and it worked!  Cool, now I'm fully settled in with Filezilla.  I like it better than FTP Commander, because it doesn't sport a goofy mouse on the form.

LOL, I can get Filezilla to connect to DC, an FTPES site, but cannot get it to connect to my church website!

Hilarious!  No doubt operator difficulty...

Hmm, cannot get Filezilla to connect to DonationCoder.  Cannot anyone specify settings I should use?

Currently, I'm using my DC username, my DC password, "Normal" connection with FTPES set, and port 21, trying to connect to ftp.donationcoder.com

I get the following (I'm copying and pasting my password from the fSekrit file where I store it):

I imported my Blogger blog into Wordpress because Blogger started getting screwy.  Wouldn't let me upload images.  Just hung.  Tried it several times over 2 days -- no dice.  I like Wordpress better anyway, as far as the interface.

I use FTP Commander 8.02 by InternetSoft Corp, and like it.  Works great for the church website I webmaster.  However, I've not been able to use it to connect to my DonationCoder space.  But I suspect that's a problem with the user's knowledge.  Probably some setting I've not gotten right, rather than the software itself.

Chromium Blog

Interesting.  The site links to comparison images in Jpeg vs. WebP, and also offers a conversion tool for developers to convert their lossy images.  Anyone fooled with this yet?  The conversion tool is currently only for *nix, but a Windows version is coming soon.  Source code is available.

Blackberry is still too email & business orientated for that and the Curve's screen is too small.

You got that right.  I'm SO tired on that tiny screen.

This is one of the reasons that I'm rooting for Novell so much. I want their Mono project to really take root and succeed. (.NET/Mono is so much more productive than some other languages.)

+1 Renegade.

It's a real pleasure coding against .NET.  I love C#.  It's my language of choice.  It's sad that Microsoft p*sses off so many people with its monopolistic tendencies.  If only they'd create a free *nix port of .NET, I think .NET use among developers would soar.  Of course, hopefully Novell's project will succeed.

Desktop applications and the people who actually prefer them are fast becoming the minority.  we're seeing more and more people turn to their phones to do their computing needs.

I find my Blackberry Curve almost useless for anything but reading a few blogs formatted especially for mobile phones, and for basic communication.  I much prefer a desktop.

And whoever said something about iPads, etc., being status symbols is exactly right.  My 13-year old wants an iPad so badly right now, precisely for this reason.  Will she use it?  Not much, not beyond the first few days, until the new 'wears off'.  Same thing as happened with the netbook I got her, which now I find lying around the house, left untended, even on the floor where it could be stepped on...

Living Room / Changes Coming To My Home Network
« Last post by kyrathaba on October 02, 2010, 02:21 PM »
Well, there are some changes coming in the near future to my home network.

Specifically, we're having a custom L-shaped computer desk built for our master bedroom.  A fellow I went to high school with has a furniture building business with his father.  They're building us a solid-oak desk with a light-satin finish.  It will have a place in the corner for the desktop monitor (at least 22", I'm thinking), and bi-level hutch-style shelving all the way around the L-shape of the desk.  Plenty of room for books, CDs, peripherals, etc.

I'm planning on taking the plunge into NAS.  Any recommendations on this are appreciated.  I've been looking at the D-link DNS-321.

Our home has the following devices:

1 desktop computer in the boys' bedroom (will add desktop to master bedroom, and replace defunct desktop unit in girls' bedroom upstairs)
3 notebook computers, all with Wifi
2 Nintendo DS Lite units with Wifi
X-mas may bring Wifi-enabled version of the iPad for the oldest child (not sure, they're still pretty high-priced for the feature-set)

So, soon to be a total of 6 PCs (3 desktops, 3 laptops).

Now, I'm not interested in running cable all over the house for a true gigabit home network.  Even if I were, my wife wouldn't permit it ;)  We buy, download, and backup movies sometimes from Amazon Unbox, so I figured we could put those on the NAS for streaming to individual PCs.  I'm the only one in the house with data that truly needs to be backed up (hours of programming, etc.), so I was planning on installing SteadyState on all children's computers (already on the one in the boys' room).

Oh, and I salvaged the 250 GB drive from the defunct desktop PC in the girls' bedroom, so I can put it in an enclosure and have an extra external drive.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?

Awesome, Wraith!  Thanks!!

I'll share my own cool discovery:

I run a roleplaying game on www.myth-weavers.com at http://www.myth-weav...mdisplay.php?f=11199

I've been developing an application for my players that will allow them to create a new character and submit it to me, their Game Master, as an email attachment, for my perusal and approval.  In thinking ahead to the Game Master application I'll be creating at some point, one of the functions I want it to have is that it automatically checks my Gmail account when the application starts, to see if any players have emailed me any character files.

Well, I've experimented until I found a way to do this.

The following brief code snippet is simply proof of concept.  It uses the free ImapX DLL.  In my example below, I set a Subject Line to look for that signals my program I've found the right email (in this case "myflag").  Then, it looks through my Gmail emails until it finds such an email, and downloads the email itself as a *.eml file, and saves the first attachment to the same directory.

This snippet is very crude, but could be refined to download all attachments (if there are more than one).  I could build in error-checking to ensure there IS an attachment before trying to save it to file, etc.

            ImapX.ImapClient client = new ImapX.ImapClient("imap.gmail.com", 993, true);
            bool result = client.Connection();
            if (result) {
                result = client.LogIn("[email protected]", "myPassword");
                if (result) {
                    ImapX.FolderCollection folders = client.Folders;
                    foreach (ImapX.Message m in client.Folders["INBOX"].Messages)
            {
              m.Process();
                      if (m.Subject == "myflag") {
                          string path = Application.StartupPath + "\\email\\";
                          string filename = "myEmail";
                          m.SaveAsEmlToFile(path, filename);
                          m.Attachments[0].SaveFile(path);
                      }
            }
                }
            }
            else {
                MessageBox.Show("connection failed");
            }

Thank you both for your help.

Wraith, can the snippet be downloaded without the line numbers?  And do you have a short snippet showing the class in use?  For example, say I want to download ...

ftp://mysite.com/myfile.jpg

to C:/localFile.jpg

username="myName"

password="myPass"

Could you snow me a snippet that will do that?  I know I must seem dense (probably AM), but it just helps.

Carol, thanks for the tip about POP; didn't know that.

Developer's Corner / Check Gmail using C#
« Last post by kyrathaba on September 30, 2010, 10:03 PM »
I've scoured the web for several days, looking for code allowing me to check my Gmail account programmatically in an application written in C#.  Found lots of examples (most pointing back to the OpenPop library), but no working examples -- and haven't been able to hack together my own working example either.

I have the same luck when I try to find actual working C# code to upload a file to a website directory using C#.  So any help in that regard would also be much appreciated.

Living Room / Some Google Blogger questions
« Last post by kyrathaba on September 28, 2010, 07:55 PM »
Anyone here have any knowledge of Google Blogger?

They now have the ability to export a backup of your block as an XML file.  You can use this to restore your blog if it becomes corrupted, or you can import your Blogger blog into Wordpress.

My first question:  Does the XML file that gets exported contain images you've uploaded to your blog?  Videos?  Or just text/HTML?

Does anyone know a way to export, or export-then-convert, a Blogger blog to a hard drive HTML directory structure that exactly reproduces the blog's online appearance and functionality?
