Apparently I am not the only one who felt Weird Al has been able to maintain his quality. Slashdot frontpaged him today

Well, if it works for one browser...shouldnt it for all browsers? I am not an opera fanatic, mind you, I do use IE7 now as I want to test it for a month or two (as it seems very promising AND I FINALLY GET BACK ROBOFORM!!!!!!!), but I do think that the standard works just as well for one browser as it does when comparing it to another.

How is it NOT fair? Opera starts up just as fast as IE6, IE7 and FF while uses far less memory. Note, YMMV, but that seems to be a general consensus amongst various forums and web sites.

AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! If I had some DCredits to give out, you'd get them renegade!

I too am tired of the "IE is so insecure" bs. Put any other browser in IE's spot, and I guarantee we would see the tables turn. Market share is proprtionally related to the number and frequency of exploits found. If only the FF crowd could learn this.;

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows Vista EULA to users: Go to hell!
« Last post by Josh on October 20, 2006, 12:38 PM »
Am I the only one who doesnt really care about these "restrictions"? It seems to me that these changes are all dealing with pirated copies of windows (limiting functionality, disabling features, etc). As such, when I purchase my copy, I really dont feel I will have to worry about being listed as "Invalid" since I have never experienced anything negative from Windows XP when it comes to WGA or activation on that front. Windows has never deactivated on me, or required me to revalidate with WGA due to a hardware change. I have only had to call in one time to reactivate during a reinstall (I had to reinstall 4 times in a week due to some hard drive issues), which took about 3 minutes, and wasnt painful at all.

I guess you can call me a sheep for my views and not wanting to see microsoft make its license more like the various GPL licenses, but, I do feel that I am quite knowledgable, holding an MCSE for Windows 2003 server and getting ready to certify on Vista, plus having several years of PC support under my belt and I feel that this license isnt really anything a legit user will have to worry about. I have followed all of the articles and to me, it seems that most of these articles have no other purpose than trying to flame microsoft for trying to protect their product. As it is, the only limitation that seems to worry me even in the slightest is the moving to more than one pc during a license's lifetime, and even if that does become an issue, there are ways to obtain extremely cheap licenses which are legit directly through microsoft. Heck, I bought the XP license I am using now for $25 and that covers a full copy of WinXP MCE 2005. After reading the article more, it seems the transfer policy is only for giving the pc with the software to someone else. Nowhere in that license quote does it say that you can't move Windows Vista to another PC if you require that. The only stipulation I can find is that you must remove it from the PC it was originally on (makes sense) before installing it on a new pc. And again, the only limitation I see with the transfer comes with OEM copies, which are bound to the PC they are sold with (or hardware) which is why OEM's get such a good discount for the software.

Anyways, As I said, I really dont see a problem in microsoft limiting its software as it has the right to do so to protect its product, but let me ask all of you, do you really think this is going to affect you so much that it would limit or hinder your ability to use the software on a daily basis?

Living Room / Re: Vista licensing - will it kill enthusiasts interest ?
« Last post by Josh on October 17, 2006, 01:51 AM »
No, its not that you can REINSTALL only once, its that you can only transfer it to a NEW PC ONCE. You can reinstall as many times as you want, but note that doing so too many times will require you call MS to reactivate.

Well, hardware changes are going to remain the same when it comes to activation.

What's the stuff about tying your activation to one piece of hardware and only being able to change the piece of hardware to tie to once?

As for apple, they love DRM even more than Microsoft, and used to have a hardware monopoly for their platform... imagine not just an operating system monopoly, but hardware as well. So as tempting as OSX might seem, well...

The "One piece of hardware" issue is related to OEM pc's. When you purchase a PC that has WinVista installed on it, your copy of vista is bound to that pc and that pc alone.

Well, hardware changes are going to remain the same when it comes to activation. In fact, according to paul, they will be less strict on this. I've changed my hardware numerous times and not once had to reactivate (this includes video cards, sound cards, nic cards, etc). The only time I had to reactivate was for a hd change, and in that case it was easy and I didnt have to call. I am not saying this is the norm, but it is my own experience (YMMV).

The problem they are addressing is the people who install it on multiple pc's and have all of those pc's still up and running and in constant use. They want people to properly license their pc's.

Now, as said in the articles I've read, you can move the software to a new pc if you purchased a retail copy of windows. However, if the copy was included on an OEM pc, then it must stay on that pc and that makes sense, as said above, since OEM's get a discount for being able to provide windows on those pc's.

I'm like you, I wish microsoft would shoot themselves in the foot on vista, but, that doesnt mean I want to see windows flop in general. Windows, to me, is a very nice and very useful OS. You can do anything you want to with it because of the limitless amounts of programs out there.

<rant>

I would like to make one comment on the whole apple thing, and that is their commercials. I've grown tired of seeing the "PC Vs Mac" commercials which try and bad mouth the PC. Yes, mac can do more out of the box, but that is because every time microsoft tries to put something in the default install of windows, they get sued for unfair practices. I guarantee apple would run into this issue if they were in the majority for market share.

You really dont think that a crack will exist before vista goes gold? Well, honestly, it depends on how you define GOLD. Do you mean RTM'd (which means next month) or do you mean RTS (Release to shelf for december/january)? If you mean RTM, then yes, it might not be cracked by then, but it will definitely be cracked by RTS.

People were saying XP would be a pain in the butt to crack, but it was cracked prior to being released.

Anyways, I really dont see this as a big issue. I mean, licensing is in place for a reason. Now, what I think MS could do is make purchasing additional licenses CHEAPER. That would make it easier for enthusiasts to properly license all of their pcs. I mean, once you purchase a full copy ($300) of winxp pro, why should you have to pay that price again for another license? Actually, I think you can buy licenses separately at a cheaper rate. I could be wrong, but if memory serves me right, I think that is the case.

Anyways, again, I dont see the big deal unless the user plans on buying more than 1 new pc by the time Vienna hits the shelves. Upgrades shouldnt pose a problem, but whole new pc's?

f0dder:

I honestly dont think there is an alternate operating system, aside from OSX, that is ready to take on the consumer level. Most of the linux/bsd derivatives still require a lot of command line work to manage. Some are close, such as linspire or mandriva, but others dont really have the "Ease of use" that most home users want. Plus, unless they automate the updating process (which is close in some distros), I dont think users will be able to keep up with the loads of security patches that are associated with most, read all, *nix OS's. Yes, the kernel might not require patching as often, but there are a lot of small modules and components that need to be patched on an almost weekly basis which are included in most default installs of *nix/bsd.

Please note, the EULA that states that it can only be installed on a SPECIFIC machine relates only to PC's purchased with windows on it. You can move it one time, regardless of situation, with a purchased copy of windows.

« Last post by Josh on October 14, 2006, 11:12 AM »
I do hope you realize that for what you've stated, I honestly feel that Windows is your best best. Since you say you are a gamer, and that you want something that can do inet, video editing, email, etc. Windows is honestly your best choice IMO.

While linux can do the latter part, for the most part (minus video editing which it lacks any really POWERFUL tools for), it is not a platform for a gamer. Dual booting, while possible, can be more of a pain in the butt than its worth. Rather than dual booting, I would suggest picking up a $200 pc off ebay, getting a KVM switch, and running each os on its own pc if you insist on two OS's just until you've learned the alternative well enough.

Just my two cents.

Honestly, I think the best OS depends on what you want to use it for. Each OS has its share of strengths and its share of weaknesses. What do YOU want to use the OS for?

Quick question, wouldnt it be possible to do this using the MS Word control provided with MS Office and a tab control? I mean, it would take some tweaking to get certain features working properly, but it doesnt sound like a hard app to code if this method would work.

actually, there have only been around 20 released to the public since build 26038, which was our last major beta release to the public (the others are more bug fixes, etc). You can always check using the contact tab and using the live support and chat. Typing ?? latest in the support window will give you a url to the latest beta build.

Good to hear this was solved :) By the way, expect 4.7 out soon. We just finished work on the new update system which is the last major change that Murray wanted before pushing the 4.7 final release. Once that is out, I will see if I can work out something for DC.Com users again :) By the way, check out the latest beta located here:
