General Software Discussion / Re: Office 2007 Search Command add-in
« Last post by Darwin on May 10, 2008, 01:07 PM »
I've been shying away from installing this but having recently beaten my head against a wall trying to find various formatting functions in Word 2007, and with mouser's , I'm off to download the MS offering now!

DVDFab is free lifetime updates as well... I've never had a problem with it. I wish it would burn to CD as well, though. If it did, I'd never use any other burning programme.
2804
Even though PP development has officially stopped, the developer does update it occasionally, or at least that is my understanding.

Did a software middleman in San Diego get fooled by some Chinese (or others with limited English) software developers ?
-Steven Avery (May 10, 2008, 07:40 AM)

I teach at a college in Canada and I can tell you that the majority of people can barely write a coherent sentence... Heck, a lot of published authors are dreadful writers -witness the book I'm presently reading. Anyway, my gut reaction to those kinds of structural errors is like yours - red flag goes up - but I suspect that often what we're really seeing is the result of a one man (or woman) show and that the software author simply can't write prose that well...

you have a lot of 0s and 1s in your post, Darwin

Just call me binary boy!

I only use two Ashampoo products these days - Uninstaller and Burning Studio - though I've purchased licences for four over the years. The others are PowerUp and WinOptimizer. Didn't really take that much to make it to the 40% discount. I just checked and my account shows 13 purchases since 2003 (anything earlier appears to have been removed) and I have 5018 Yiggles.

Great. Now I want WANT one  >:(

;D Upgrades - I only paid full price for the first two programmes that I bought... in 2001!
2810
Is it a one-time rebate? Thought you could use it whenever you like. Anyway, one thing to note is that you can't apply your yiggles discount to software that is already discounted. As their discounted prices are almost always greater than 40%, I've never actually used my Yiggles (I have over 4000 so would qualify for the 40% discount). It's ALWAYS worth it to be patient with Ashampoo purchases - keep your eyes peeled for a discount!

Especially since the US court decision that allows US customs to examine and seize anyone's computer for no announced reason whatsoever!

Er... wouldn't that mandate likely extend to media as well?
2812
I made the change to 12288, Curt  :)

My original use of the term brave was really in the context of the expression "brave soul" - I didn't mean much by it!

I'm with OF here... never assume that you're not the equal of anyone. Also, iphigenie - go for it! I'm often asked how I got into the univeristy that I went to... the answer? I applied! You've got nothing to lose...
2814
I made the change and - no surprises here - after 10 hours of continuous use, no problems. I've spent most of that time with mutiple Office 2007 apps and docs open, Endnote X, a webbrowser and so on open with not so much as a hiccough. Couldn't in honesty claim that it would have been a problem before, though.
2815
Right then, Darwin timidly steps into the fray and starts modding his Registry. 9999998 has a nice ring to it!
2816
So... er, has any brave soul tried setting this value (12288) in XP?

My notebook is still at HP cos I live in a country where replacing a battery and a charger, still under guaranty, takes two weeks.

Two weeks? Luxury! I've had this done on three different notebooks in Canada and it's never taken less than three weeks. OTOH, I had a systemboard replaced in a notebook when I lived in the UK and they picked it up (in Canada I've had to ship notebooks myself or take them into a store to have them shipped), repaired it and returned it within 3 days!

EDIT: replaced a few errant words  :o

I tried all the links for LazyCat in your list, only one linked to a download (Lazy1_1a.zip) which shows up on my system as a corrupted file on each of three separate different DL attempts.
-Lolipop Jones (April 29, 2008, 10:17 AM)

Crush, maybe you or someone who has the LazyCat zip file host it here at DC before it disappears fron the Net. i'm curious enough to try it as well. :)

I like this idea as well  Wonder about the legal aspect, though... or is it effectively abandonware?

Hi Alex - thank you for taking the time to respond to me and welcome to DC  I don't have the application in question installed any longer, but have just taken a look at the e0-mail I received from the developer and you're right - I spoke (wrote) in haste: the licence name that I received was generated by the software company and has nothing to do with TrialPay  :-[

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Breakaway Audio Processor for Windows System
« Last post by Darwin on April 28, 2008, 06:16 PM »
I'm loving the sound of Breakaway but hating the bugs... Example: my USB ports were rendered inaccessible, necessitating a reboot, because I put my notebook into Standby with no USB peripherals attached in one location (public library) and attempted to attach peripherals when I got home. I supppose that this means it's time to frequent their users' forum!

TrialPay is a bit... deceptive because it's sort of a glorified Giveawayoftheday licence - my experience is that you get a Trialpay username and licence, so it never feels like your own licence. Also, I'm not clear on how upgrades work.
2825
Doh! I was/am talking about the Pro version  :-[ I only recently purchased it and have not had much time to configure it... That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks for correcting me on that, Curt
