This will be my 3rd attendance of the Gencon board game convention.  This year it will be held from Aug 2-5 in Indiana.
If any else is planning on attending let me know and we can meet up and play some board games and I'll bring you a rare DC games division mug.

FYI: The search failures were my fault -- I was over-eager in cleaning out a database table that I thought was related to logs but was actually important for search.  Table replaced and updated, no harm done, no data lost.
I've tweaked the search results a little now, so maybe they will be a tiny bit more relevant than they have been on the old server.. but after everything else is sorted out I'll try to go through and improve search results.

Ok searching in topics-only and in current topic should be working now..  Still some tweaking to do to get search results to be better, but I think we are back to where we were before.
(note that some caching of search results happens so if you search for something again that you searched for prior to my fixes, youll get old empty results until the cache clears).

Yep, that was the first place I went.  Our ip was not on any public blacklists, I think it was just att and hotmail being paranoid by default about an ip they had never seen.
2806
Att says they have removed the black list, and hotmail says they have as well, so we should be good.

The search function on the forum is still not working right (searching in topics-only is clearly not working).. I'm not quite sure what the nature of the problem -- it's probably related to the forum database api.. I'm working on it.

Developer's Corner / What really happened with Microsoft Vista
« Last post by mouser on January 17, 2018, 12:03 PM »
From OS news we are linked to some very interesting essays by people involved in the development of the Microsoft Vista operating system -- what went wrong, what the issues were, etc.

Check these out and let me know if they are good to go.
If so I will update official downloads with the german books:
https://www.donation...lay_books_german.zip

It would be nice to give credit to the translators -- could you write a little translator_readme.txt note for me to include?  Or if you just want to tell me what to include I will be happy to make the file and include it.

I will download and generate some books.  If it takes up too much space I can always reduce font size.  Standby.

I'd put it on my todo list, but at this point my todo list has been concatenated and is scrollable for miles.
I think the more likely even that will happen before then is the possibility of migrating all of our content to a new forum system at the end of the year.  Right now I'm still spending 18 hour days working on getting all of the final little the server migration details working right.

Oh yeah, guess what -- you know those 4am daily "the server is down for maintenance" backup messages.  They are no gone the way of the dodo
2814
Yeah, I've corrected that.  And it seems there was a mis-configuration of the DKIM dns records, which can hurt.  Hopefully all is fixed now.  We shall see.

turned up only one page of 30 references
should be fixed now -- you should see up to 1000 results.

TIP: The indexed search which runs by default, is fast but doesn't always do the best job of sorting results.  This is especially true if you search for something that returns thousands of hits.
If you can't find what you're looking for follow the instructions at the top of the results page for how to do a more thorough search.

How does the site feel?
2818
We have just moved to a new server, and we see that hotmail and att (and maybe some others we haven't found yet), are blocking email from us.
Our new server IP does not appear to be on any blacklists so it may just be they are blocking the server because it's new to them or it is similar to an ip they don't like or they are just being grumpy.
We expect to have it sorted out very soon, but if you try to register an account at the forum or otherwise expect mail from us and don't see, that's why.

I'll post an update here when we see that the emails are going through.

Note that we can still receive mail FROM you, it's just if we send email to your address you won't get it.  So you can still submit comments to us from our Contact page.

Not sure I would 'hide' the link to the blog under Editorials but that's just an opinion of course.
Agreed.. if we can get it more regular it should be moved to top-level status.  The menu arrangement is subject to change.

Another one: the Paypal button at top right also 404s. I think it's because it points to https://www.donationcoder.com/Donate instead of https://www.donationcoder.com/donate (lowercase)

Thanks very much, initial redirect fix is in.  Still have to change some forum references.

I want to say a HUGE thanks to Stephen for all his help testing, his encouragement, his help building cms pages, and the list goes on.  He was a constant optimistic voice of encouragement during the times when I was bitching and moaning and regretting the whole project.  And a huge thanks to PhilB, who runs his own hosting company(lchost.uk) for providing server space for literally years while I slowly tested the new server setup.

It turned out to be a huge amount of work to move over to a CMS system -- there was always one more thing to fix and do, and that seemed to go for months on end.  It's actually been something like 5 years since I said we were going to move to a new cms system.. And at least a year of seriously working on it.  The decision to move physical servers at the same time made some things easier, and some things harder, but it was an important step in getting us the cleanest, most easily maintainable setup.

It is such a relief to have moved to a setup that is easier to maintain and keep updated and secure.  I expect there will still be some hiccups as we get things sorted out -- and some redirects from old pages that we will have overlooked and need to add in the coming days.  But overall the move seems to have gone pretty well so far.

Most of the changes to the site you can't see -- they are behind the scenes in the way the back end of the site is handled.  Lots of things that were kludged together (submission forms, license key payment stuff) in the past have been rewritten and will hopefully make things simpler and less error prone.  The license key and donation system has been revamped and should be less confusing and less effort for everyone.

And I haven't said anything here about the new member server which is up and running and has some dc members working hard to polish up their pages.

I'll have a lot more to say about the new hosting company, the backend cms and the choices made -- why and where we go from here -- in the very near future.

One of the things that has really held back the current site in terms of writing new content and updating content on the website, was just how ridiculously hard it was to do (the pages were all hand-written static html pages, from 2005).  Now that we can actually update the website more easily I hope we can embark on a course of adding real content to the pages on a regular basis.  We can talk about such plans soon.

But most of all, everything we've put in place is in keeping with the basic strategy of creating something that can last indefinitely without major intervention and operating costs and overhead.  So I hope we will be able to keep on keeping on for the next decade.

Stay tuned for lots more info about the new server and cms setup in the weeks to come.  And thanks everyone for your patience!   And do please let us know about issues you find on the new site -- there are bound to be some.

What red color scheme?

And here we go..
2824
Are you able to define what are all the conditions under which the "Modified" date/time will be updated?
After I finish updating the server and catch my breath I'll go through the source code and see if I can find out what events cause the modification time to be updated -- just remind me this week if I don't report back sooner.

I have solved the problem.  Only took 6 hours of screaming at the screen.
I will re-perform the server move tomorrow morning, same procedure, forum will shutdown while i migrate the very latest copy of the database.
